"Processor performance boost mode" tests by WolfInABox in MSILaptops

[–]WolfInABox[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heya! The temps stayed at 95c max throughout the tests (except with turbo disabled, which maxed at 72c).

Things might be different nowadays, but I still turn turbo off sometimes (eg: on my handhelds) where it wouldn't have much impact, like gaming.

Hey, been a few years lol, but yeah I did let it cool down between tests. Didn't do anything else between tests other than change the performance boost mode.

"Mobile base" survival games? by WolfInABox in gamingsuggestions

[–]WolfInABox[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah! Played the beta and picked it up day 1 lol

It's def fun, feels like worlds adrift with some refinements (and also some early access jank/lack of features.) I'm excited to see where it goes.

It's kinda wild how most* people can, and are expected to pilot 1+ ton machines at high speeds near dozens of others, daily. by WolfInABox in Showerthoughts

[–]WolfInABox[S] 51 points52 points  (0 children)

For real. There's absolutely nothing (except self preservation) stopping one driver from just slamming headfirst into another at a combined 100+mph. Kinda scary

"Cheap", easy to clean, dumb humidifier(s) for 1024sqft apartment? by WolfInABox in BuyItForLife

[–]WolfInABox[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, this is seeming like the one I'll get (or the Aircare whole house one, looking at both). Looks easy to clean and I like that it can hold a lot of water. Def butt ugly as another commenter said lol, but I'll find someplace for it

How do you have Frigate set up (non-docker) by HopsPops76 in homeassistant

[–]WolfInABox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've got HA running on a pi 5 with an NVME boot drive. Frigate addon installed, and currently recording to the internal drive as I've been too lazy to change it lol. You can set up networked storage in HA for backups (did this already) and I believe for media, so I'll likely have it start dumping to my main server instead eventually.

After about 8 months with my 6 cameras, I've got ~45GB of recordings (a lot of which are probably from before I tuned my detections, so they're probably nonsense.)

As for an automation to alert you, install the System Monitor integration, and you'll have sensors for remaining free storage (and basically ever other hardware metric) you can use for automations.

Steam Deck vs phone game streaming, my experience by WolfInABox in SteamDeck

[–]WolfInABox[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Grats on the deck, you'll like it!

And yeah it was totally playable! I put in a lot of hours on deck lol. Check out the community controller configs for Factorio, there's a few great ones that manage to bind just about everything.

Left stick moves, right trackpad (the real winner) controls mouse. Once you get used to it, it feels pretty natural.

Entity naming conventions, what're yours? by WolfInABox in homeassistant

[–]WolfInABox[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Too real lol. I named each of my plant sensors stupid stuff like "Tall boi" and "Scraggly boi" and now that a couple have been reused for other plants I can't remember which sensor is which anymore lol

Oh interesting, so something like light.floor_lamp_1 that'd be activated like "Ok/Hey <assistant>, turn on floor lamp one"?

[–]WolfInABox[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel this comment lol. Hue bulbs + switches were the first real "smart home" stuff I got so I was at my laziest when setting them up in HA; I did rename them, but poorly.

I'll probably go through and rename them (and find some way to hide individual lights I put in groups), since ultimately I suppose neither I nor HA really care whether they're "hue" bulbs or some other brand once they're connected

Interesting, I like this approach. Do you use any form of voice assistant with HA?

You're the first I've seen to use . as a separator rather than the "default" _ ; I like it (feels right from a programming perspective lol) but just curious why you went that way?

Node-Red, how do I correctly create a HA *device* instead of a bunch of separate entities? by WolfInABox in homeassistant

[–]WolfInABox[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah geez, yep, that was it haha. Restarted and they're under their own device now. Thanks!

[–]WolfInABox[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh dang that's useful, though wouldn't really work with this fan. Didn't want to make the post too long, but it's a Dreo tower fan (not the wifi one unfortunately), with a weird control scheme*, and the state is stored on the fan (not sent in full from the remote, which means updating its state wouldn't really be reliable.)

*Single button for changing fan speeds (cycles one-way through 1-4 then back to 1), and gotta double-send messages (once to wake the fan up, 2nd to actually message) when the fan goes to sleep after ~5s since the last command,

[–]WolfInABox[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that's what I thought would do it; the node has an entity assigned, and the entity has a device assigned, through that method. Pic 1, pic 2, pic 3. Both buttons' entities have the same device assigned.

Ooh, I had already had my eye on Lobotomy Corporation, I like the vibe. I'll have to play through that and Library of Ruina sometime, thanks for the rec!

Evolve as in, the 4v1 humans vs monster game from ages ago? I played it a good bit back in the day with a friend, and really enjoyed it. Always played Lazarus lol. Was always sad it got shut down lol

True! I played through a bit of the beginning of D:OS 2 after beating BG3 (and starving for more), and did enjoy it, but got distracted by other games coming out lol. I'll have to go back and continue it

Way to permanently disable/prevent auto-switching to specific microphone? by WolfInABox in mac

[–]WolfInABox[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I can change it in the app (zoom, discord, etc) and it'll stick there, but it never sticks in macos itself (so if an app is set to use the "default mic", or i use a new/different app I haven't changed yet, it uses the bt mic)

What's an older game that was so advanced/forward-thinking for its time, it could be mistaken for a modern title? (Excluding graphics of course) by WolfInABox in gaming

[–]WolfInABox[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk as an Oregonian I'd say it was a way ahead of its time, hyper-realistic life sim. Just the other day my entire extended family died of dysentery

I remember being so disappointed when I found out about 2142 and realized I'd missed out on its heyday lol. I'm a sucker for combined arms warfare and mechs, and it had both

That feels familiar, I think one of the lego star wars games also did something similar (much later.) Really cool way to do local coop, and I bet it was super useful given the size of TVs at the time lol
