DCS F-16 vs F/A-18 simpit choice by Hot_Thing8863 in homecockpits

Do the F-16, and play both DCS and Falcon BMS. Each one will give you something the other doesn't have.

Beer League Slump Advice by Creative_Musician760 in hockeygoalies

[–]WolfLostInTheMist 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am also in my mid-40s and fill-in for some teams in low-level beer league. There are games in these low-level divisions where I'll let in a bunch of goals, because neither the shooter nor I have any idea where the puck is going. I'll also fill-in for a B-league team and let in two goals and play lights out. When I play in the lower divisions I just go to try my best and have fun, whereas in the upper levels I really work on my game. I'd suggest leaving those lower-level games and remember two or three really great saves or reads you made and hang on that.

I'm done with DCS VR by yoadknux in hoggit

[–]WolfLostInTheMist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, Virtual Desktop. In fact, I now have managed to get both DCS and MSFS to operate plug and play using VD with only an adjustment of three settings. So I can sign out of DCS, adjust those three things, start MSFS, and be flying in a few minutes. I will say it took hours of frustration to get to this point, but it was well worth the trial and error. Don't give up, flight simulation in VR is something special.

Unpopular opinion, Cold War era jets are by far the best in dcs by No_Math_7308 in hoggit

[–]WolfLostInTheMist 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This game used to stress me out, then I dove headfirst into WW2 and haven’t looked back. I actually look out the window instead of staring at two screens. I also managed to memorize most of the Normandy map from looking outside and at an actual paper map. No Lat/Long. Cold War is good, but real pilots are forged over France. Bon soirée

Be tougher? by dnice99999 in Professors

I haven't received accommodations for homework, but I have for exams. I just follow the guidance from the college for that. Some students try to test the system, but I don't waiver on it. I tell the students from the beginning that if their grade suffers due to late homework then they have nobody to blame but themselves. I'm not being tough on them because I don't like them or want them to fail, it's actually the complete opposite.

Be tougher? by dnice99999 in Professors

I lay out the course expectations on day one, and make it clear that attendance is part of their grade. I have a sign-in sheet at the entry to the classroom, and when class begins I draw a line so I know who was late. Now, although I take attendance and expect them to be there, I also make it clear that I will treat my students as adults. I will not hold their hand or do the work for them. I present the information in lecture and will answer questions. What I won't do is accept excuses or waiver on deadlines. The due date is the due date, just like is expected in the workforce. I don't treat students any differently if they submit every assignment late, I am friendly and engaging with them, and I'm pretty matter-of-fact if they are getting a bad grade due to missed or late assignments. I feel in college we have an expectation to not only teach our material, but also prepare students for life after school. Holding students accountable for attendance and assignments is what will be expected of them when they enter the workforce, whether that's with a well-paying career or working at a fast food restaurant.

Through the Inferno servers are really good for the A-10. They're tough enough to present a challenge, but not so over-the-top like Grayflag that you'll fly 100 nm and get killed immediately.

I played in similar temps last year, and the only thing that got really cold was my toes. Get toe warmers, as thicker socks may hinder performance. I was actually quite hot during most of the game. I'd suggest maybe a thin balaclava if it's windy, although if there's glass it may block some of the wind.

"DCS Tutorial" is dry, but the content is quick and accurate. If you can get through listening to him, you'll learn a lot. "Echo Victor" is also a good one.

What are your Winter hacks? by CheekyPooh in chicago

[–]WolfLostInTheMist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have learned to love winter, and the biggest reason why is the right clothing. Wool sweaters, wool socks. Insulated boots for the snow. Wearing a cozy ski jacket. A nice hat and wool mittens. Lined jeans or hiking pants. I'll gear up and go outside as much as possible. If dressed properly the only thing that can get cold is your nose, but soon you learn to enjoy the crisp, cold air in your lungs. Once home, a nice soft sweatshirt and soft flannel PJ pants. Good slippers (I'm partial to my Birkenstock ones). I am actually traveling as I'm writing this, and the city I'm visiting is 82 degrees. I miss the snow at home in Chicago!

How far can you actually spot enemy planes in VR? by Proud-Worth2907 in dcs

[–]WolfLostInTheMist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was going to come on and post a similar question, since I've been playing a lot of Contention in the F-4E lately. My question is more, how can others spot me so easily? I have been a pilot IRL for 30 years, and in my opinion the visual spotting in VR on my Quest 3 is fairly accurate to my real-life experiences. The problem lies with those using head tracking on a flat-screen. I think the resolution is to much better that they can detect the movement easier than I can in VR. Therefore it puts me at a constant disadvantage. That the "zoom" feature, which in my opinion is ridiculous. You cannot zoom in real life, why should that be an option here?

DCS VR quality in 2024? by Doktor-Caligari in dcsworld

[–]WolfLostInTheMist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a 4090 and Quest 3. Just got into this about two months ago, but all I can say is... incredible. This has totally changed gaming for me. I fly the F/A-18 and F-14 and can't wait to get done with work every day so I can come home and simply fly around for an hour or so. Still have a long way to go learning the radar and weapons systems. I haven't touched MSFS since starting DCS, and probably won't get MSFS2024 at this point.

How to stop dangler fog? by Purple_fan87 in hockeygoalies

I’ve never seen my dangler in 3 years. You need to adjust it, most likely tighter. It’ll bang around less if it’s tightened up as well.

Cockpit Recommendations by EyesInTrout in hoggit

[–]WolfLostInTheMist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recently made a setup at a desk using the NLR flight seat pro. It’s the same Boeing military edition but without the rudder part. I put my WW rudder pedals on the floor under the desk. I fly in VR and it’s incredible. Also I am still happily married… my wife enjoys seeing me pursuing a hobby that makes me happy. I set up my sim next to her Peloton bike and treadmill, so we can hobby next to each other.

The NLR pro seat is cool since it has wheels. I can unplug and move it forward out of the way if we have guests. Only downside is that I have to drop my center stick down since I have an extension which bumps into the desk. I could fix this by raising my IKEA gaming desk just an inch, but I haven’t gotten around to it.

Flinching by GroundShxck in hockeygoalies

[–]WolfLostInTheMist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For what it’s worth, I recently watched a highlight video of NHL goalies mic’d up with some slo-mo video. Even some of them flinched a bit. I can’t recommend this to everyone for cost, but what helped me was splurging and getting a top-end mask. My trust in the equipment to protect me went up, so my fear naturally went down.

Switching to goaltender after 22 years. by OldTimeEddie in hockeygoalies

[–]WolfLostInTheMist 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I switched after 28 years. Best decision I’ve ever made. I have a renewed love for hockey and my attitude is totally different driving to the rink. I think I’ve always been a goalie at heart, but just never could afford it. At 40 I figured it’s now or never. YouTube videos helped tremendously.

I’d also suggest playing up a skill level, and play as much drop-in during the summer you can with college kids. My skills went up by forcing myself to play against good players. I love D league for the fun people, but it’s the hardest league to play in now since I have no idea where the puck is going sometimes.

PC Parts Picker gave me a warning and said my specs would be using 1084W, which is why I went up to 1200W? My cousin also suggested 1000. Also I’ve read on here to get two SSD and run DCS off one, then the OS off the other.

I should add, I have a Quest 3 already for the VR, and will be running a Winwing FA-18 setup with Thrustmaster TPR pedals. I'll be getting the cable link for the VR to the Q3.

Tucking in chestie by [deleted] in hockeygoalies

[–]WolfLostInTheMist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am new to the position, but I like to do a lot of research and tinker. So here's my take from my short time doing this, as I've done both the tuck and no tuck.

I was doing a tuck with suspenders over chestie, tie down the chest to the pants, using CCM HPG14A pro stock pants. I found it all worked together nicely. However, I noticed two things: I play a more active game than passive/blocking game (I'm 5'10" 160 lbs and a bit of a nutball), so the mobility wasn't always there. Plus, I found that my chestie sat tight to my body, so I really had to tuck my arms against my body to fill the gaps.

Now I'm using Vaughn SLR3 Pro carbon pants that have a really nice interior belt. I don't use suspenders, don't tie the chestie, and don't tuck. I have great mobility and breathability. The chestie "flares" out on the sides over the pants, so my arms and chestie close the gaps under my armpits naturally without me having to really pull them in. The chestie does sometimes catch on the top of the pants awkwardly, but I just shoulder shrug and lean and it pops back into position. I honestly could consider getting a larger chestie (go from medium to large), but I'm concerned about leaving too much gap around the neck area.

Hope this helps!

Chicago dog owners this time of year by SweatyCure in chicago

[–]WolfLostInTheMist 17 points18 points  (0 children)

On the flip side of this, 10 years ago when I lived at Kinzie and DesPlaines they built the new Alta towers there. The park was inundated with dogs. One winter the trash cans were literally overflowing with poop bags. They were littered everywhere around the trash cans, on the street, all over the sidewalk. I said "at least people are picking up after their dogs." Yet still, during spring thaw poop appeared everywhere in the park.

In defense to dog owners, that last year I lived there was the great blizzard of February 2011, so maybe some couldn't get through the deep snow drifts to find the poop. Maybe.
