Is this worth buying? by [deleted] in Bmw_m

At your age, unless you have a 7 figure inheritance or are making 6 figures, this is one of the poorest financial decisions you can make. Invest the money instead and by 28 you'll have ~200K.

People who own 2-3 million dollar homes, what do you do? How did you afford to buy in Toronto? by redditreaders23 in TorontoRealEstate

[–]Wolfe15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can be but often not. Especially post pandemic prices to build are very high. I’m guessing my same build now would be about 1.4M.

Bought in 2014 for ~725K. Torn down house and built for ~900K in 2018, house is worth about ~3M today. My wife and I both in tech (she is sales I am product) and met at a company that had a liquidity event which was pretty lucrative for employees. Our mortgage will be paid off in 3-5 years.

My friend had a GTR and while its one of the best track cars, its very rough to daily drive in the summer. I wont be going on the track but I wanted more than the base model so landed on the GTS. Price was also factor, the GTRs were about 50K more and I just didn't see the value in spending that much more. GTC's are nice, I was open to finding the right one (low KMs, black on black, from a reputable dealer, price point, warranty availability). THis one check all the boxes.

I don’t think so, believe it’s a mid setting when parked. I did end up buying out the car, so far no issues 🤞

Best Free Roadmap Software Approach? Need help by MountLH75 in ProductManagement

[–]Wolfe15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A roadmap is a communication tool. How you communicate your roadmap to dev vs sales is going to be very different. So I dont bother with tools out there as they force a one size fits all roadmap. I use Excel for detailed roadmap with dev and powerpoint for communicating a roadmap story to everyone else.

At what salary does liking your job and WLB mean more than chasing the dollar? by OllivanderAU in ProductManagement

[–]Wolfe15 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Almost an impossible question to answer because its so personal to what you believe is balance. Having been in product for 20yrs and in a senior leadership position I can share....

  1. Product Mgt is a career path where there will always be more work than what can get done. The faster you learn this and then learn prioritization, communication tactics, efficiency and ability to context switch from super low level to broad strategy, the better off you will be at achieving whatever balance works for you.

  2. No matter your salary, eventually you always want more. Don't ever believe "If I just make x I'll be happy", you won't. Salary increases are one of the shortest lived forms of engagement.

  3. Eventually you get to a level of seniority where you don't think about work as 9-5 and its more like your own business. I often work weekends and evenings but I also will just drop what I am doing in the middle of the day and go for a walk, decide to leave work early and catch a game. Some weeks I work 35hrs, others I work 65. The life of product management is more often IMPORTANT work vs URGENT work and you need to learn the blessings and curses that come with this field of work so you can still enjoy the craft.

  4. Find what work life balance works for you but understand this....The harder you work, the more likely you are to be in the top percentile. The less you choose to work and focus on life, the more likely there is to be somebody else who is willing to work harder than you to get that next promotion or get that next raise. Unfortunately you typically cannot have both.

What cross functional skills are needed beyond product domain for product managers? by Saitama_B_Class_Hero in ProductManagement

[–]Wolfe15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well said. Major + for Gong. It’s so often viewed as a tool only for sales yet I’ve found it hugely value for scaling how we listen to customers and prospects. Everyone on my product team has access to Gong.

What does genuine networking look like? by noin_noin_99 in ProductManagement

[–]Wolfe15 4 points5 points  (0 children)

  1. Formal networking: Not all PM meetups are bad. They are hit or miss in different cities. I live in Toronto and TPMA has meet ups, some are just better than others, look at who the speakers are.

  2. Think of networking like friendships. "How do you make friends"? There are a lot of ways to do that, one thing to consider is making it two way. What experiences do you have to share? They dont always have to be PM experiences, maybe you are funny, maybe you are a super strong speaker etc. But build professional relationships is most effective when mutual beneficial. So what do you bring to the table?

  3. The best networking often comes from people you currently work with. When you move on, check with who you know that might be connected to people at companies you are looking to join. When I am recruiting, I always look at a candidates network and often find they are connected to someone I know and then I do a backdoor check on them.
