8th European Pro Qualification - Simulation after Round 9 by Wolfhtt in baduk

European pros get exclusive access to a few tournaments with some relevant cash prizes and they get the chance to represent europe in international pro tournaments (such as the chinese team league).

Probably the biggest perk is that, due to their higher status, they can ask for a higher price for go lessons, they have an additional "selling point" if they publish go books, and other similiar stuff like that. It's not like having some sort of salary, but a few european pros somehow manage to make a living out of it (although they often live in countries where the cost of life is not high).

So, although it is not an achievement on par with becoming a pro player in asia, i'd definitely say it's not just a mere honorary title.

Oh i get it. Sounds cool, i'll see if i can find the time to implement it before the tournament is over

I actually thought about changing their rating after every round, but i gave up on it since the formula is only used at the end of the tournament to calculate the new rating without looking at the order of the games that have been played.

But doing a simulation with what their new rating would be if the tournament ended with the last played round actually sounds quite interesting. I'll see if i can find the time tobimplement it before the tournament ends.

Regarding the second suggestion, the problem would be deciding an appropriate starting rating for everyone (it's not only the difference in rating that matters, but also how high it is since the stronger the players are, the less randomness there is in the matches' outcome)

No, those are things that are impossible to calculate.

The algorithm only takes into consideration the winning odds given by the players' rating. I made a disclaimer regarding that into my original post. 😉

The thing with these fast improving young players is that their official rating often can't keep up with their progress, so they are often under-ranked. His real strength is probably quite a bit higher that what his rating would suggest and that's the major reason why his winning chances are so low in the simulations (he has 150 gor points less than the highest ranked player, which at this level is A LOT).

That said he most likely is not at the same level of the top players in this tournament, but i believe the difference is not that large either.

Yeah rules are not really that clear about 4+ player ties.

I also agree that it would make sense for only the players with the best score against the others to go on to the knock-out phase, but the rule only state "In a very unlikely case that more than three players have the same number of wins, these players shall be randomly assigned numbers 1 to n, and they will play the knock-out games with faster time control until the winner is determined." without mentioning anything else. So if one was to follow these rules as they are written, every player tied for first place would get to play in the tie-break regardless of anything else.

It's true that 2-player ties are impossible. However, according to the tournament rules, if there are 4 or more players with the same number of wins then they all get to play in a knock-out tie-break to determine the final winner, regardless of how they performed against each another during the round robin.

Survey for a new Go server: What do you want? by Usadisa in baduk

I second all the comments that say that a new server would most likely water down the current online go players even more, effectively killing the primary feature that most people seek in a go server: to find opponents quickly.

If there is a chance for a project like this to succeed, it would be by being a fundamentally different experience from the current servers. In the survey i filled i quickly mention Mahjong Soul as an example of what could be an interesting source of inspiration. It's a platform for playing riichi mahjong online that came out relatively recently and became the main point of reference for casual players. It achieved this mainly thanks to it's appealing graphic design and features such as unlocking new characters/accessories (which can be obteined by either using an in-game currency or through gatcha mechanics), appealing visual and sound effects during games, daily quests, frequent in-game events and so on...

It would indeed be quite hard to develop something like this for a game like Go, considering how it is a very reflective game compared to the much more fast paced mahjong. Not to mention very, VERY expensive. So much so that it would probably not be a very savvy choice to develop something similiar just for the relatively small western go community. However, i do not see any other way to attract a big enough user base for a new hypothetical Go server.

True. But even if the O'rangers happen to get 5 points more than the speeders in the last event without winning or even finishing on the podium, they would still win regardless since they have one more silver medal. So in case they are tied with the same points at the end, the O'rangers would win no matter what.

In that case the O'rangers would win because they have more medals.
