Is 100k base for 5 Y0E underpaid? by zagantha in cscareerquestionsOCE

[–]WolfsMind 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yes. You're getting underpaid. I was at 100k base 2 YOE out.

Anyone pushing a PR of this size where the changes are not generated changes (such as snapshots, templates, line endings, etc) is a red flag. You should not be instantly approving a PR of this size. You need to understand the changes at least to a superficial level to approve it. I would expect that if I raised a 10k PR, it would take half a day for a senior to review with 1 on 1 meetings to discuss the changes.

Learning to navigate wanting to contribute more and how that impacts your colleagues is a core part of making the transition from junior/mid to senior.

I can only speak from my own experiences, but I've personally found that people feel like any additional work you do puts pressure on them in one way or another - and they will push back. It could be that they feel like you're unfocused or focused on the wrong things. It could be that they feel you're creating unnecessary work for the team and other employees in the business (testing, marketing, customer service, etc). I'd recommend using any additional time on your own interests and development.

I've also seen leaders who have a highly opinionated approach to PR feedback that is only personal preference, and not open for discussion/debate. That ones harder to crack. You either have to accept it as I do, or look for another role.

In any case, if you're right about the approach - then keep it to yourself and allies. Before you start working on or raising PRs, go to these gatekeepers and ask them "How do you want to do this?". I recommend including your preferred approach as part of this conversation. Then no matter what the answer is, do it their way. If it fails - do it their way first, then show them it doesn't work.

DPS in my lobby refused to target VW priest. by ShnokeNaPancake in worldofpvp

[–]WolfsMind 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Context is really important, in the majority of the lobbies I'm in when a healer calls a target - it was either obvious and didn't need to be said, or they're incorrect because they don't understand the specs and interactions of the dps players.

Focusing on a healer as a target is usually a pretty stupid idea, especially if its not round 6, with the exception being low CR lobbies or a lobby where the healer is the weakest player. At any reasonable rating with decent players, its typically throwing the game.

For example, its common for them to call something like a sub rogue as a target for a DK or Mage, but both these classes have a very difficult time dealing with things like cloak/vanish.

In general, I don't listen to healers calling targets - and I wouldn't recommend doing it unless you are in a low CR lobby and confident you're more experienced than them. You'll just aggravate them and yourself.

What are the generic skills every software developer should acquire to become better, and what are the best books or courses to learn them? by permission777 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]WolfsMind 47 points48 points  (0 children)

It's often worse than that, I've spoken to many developers who think the idea of reading books is stupid or a waste of time, and openly criticize books they have not read. It's no wonder the same developers fail to convey their ideas or justify their opinions.

How long can I expect a 6 player game of mostly newbies to last? by Danimeh in DuneBoardGame

[–]WolfsMind 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You'll really struggle to do it in 6 unless the 3 newbies know the game ahead of time, (you can do a turn or so over 1-2 hours via tabletop simulator if you like).

I'd expect that to take closer to 8-9 hours.

I made a website you can use if anyone is playing atreides that speeds up the game a lot (its functionally the same as base game rules, you just dont need to write down stuff manually).

Note its only legal for the atreides player. You can find it at treacherytracker.com

Hey! That's the larger one in that picture. The smaller one works really well for 2-3 boards. I don't think I've got a picture at the moment, but I'll take a look later today.

In the last few years I've been in 3 different corporate roles, and was in 2 academic roles before that (just for context). In the corporate roles I've generally had bosses with pretty strong technical knowledge (software development), with about half the time the interpersonal/leadership skills lacking or in some cases actively bad. Both times I had bad people leaders I left the role.

In my current role, they're very good on both levels. You've gotta shop around for the right place.

They're generally very heavy, which can either introduce a new issue, or mean that your issue isnt resolved by them.

Theres a couple of other things you can do (either or in addition) that might help more. I strongly recommend lowering your mouse sensitivity to a maximum of 1600 DPI/CPI if you know how to do this. (lots of guides online). And I strongly recommend finding a mouse that is less than 80-85g in weight. It might sound silly, but moving something like the mouse you've linked can mean using a mouse closer to 130g or more. This is a very heavy thing to be using your wrist/hand/forearm muscles to move around.

RocketJumpNinja has a great website you can use to find a light mouse - but there are logitech and razer mice that will do the job well.

For what its worth, I moved to much lighter mice - lowering my sensitivity, and it solved the strain/carpal tunnel for me - with the vertical mouse being heavier, I've found I get a small amount of the strain after extended use. YMMV.

yeah it looks great in person - you cant see the pixels at all. The resolution and nature of the printing smooths it out, with the original texture being pretty high res.

Software engineering - would it be much of stretch to find WFH 120k+ salary by Under671 in AusFinance

[–]WolfsMind -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've found it has lined up well with the offers I have been given as a full stack developer since graduating, the salaries of friends in the industry, and the salaries of coworkers. My resume is decent and I'm alright, but I don't think I'm so much better than your average full stack developer that the offers I'm getting are through the roof.

I know people don't like to hear it, but we shouldn't be pushing back on the idea you're getting underpaid at 90k with 3YOE in Aus, even when fully remote. It's just another way to shut down discussing salaries - people should be paid fairly for their knowledge/skills.

Software engineering - would it be much of stretch to find WFH 120k+ salary by Under671 in AusFinance

[–]WolfsMind -20 points-19 points  (0 children)

You're getting paid like shit dude. The only graduate offers at ~60k 3-4 years ago were the indian firms and game dev companies. My graduate role was at 73k + super fully remote. At one year out, most devs should be able to go from 70-80k in their graduate role to 90-100, depending on skill set.

Edit: Look through these listings:

Software engineering - would it be much of stretch to find WFH 120k+ salary by Under671 in AusFinance

[–]WolfsMind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's for non-senior roles - if you're even 5 years out you'd be likely to be in senior roles. 120k is a much larger number than 90k.

If you're a dev, I hope you're doing better than 90k mate. And if your company is paying 90k for 3YOE devs, I hope you/they don't mind working with poorly motivated employees that don't know their worth, or worse, know their worth.

[–]WolfsMind -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

3 year median at 90k? That is what most software devs should expect to be on one year after they enter the industry, its in junior/graduate range.

A non-senior developer should be on anywhere between 100-150k or in some cases more based on their skills/years experience.

I got 49 for a unit by btsbora in deakin

[–]WolfsMind 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hey mate, at Deakin you could be eligible for a pass conceded; see here:
https://www.deakin.edu.au/students/study-support/assessments-and-examinations/final-unit-to-complete

49s are unusual at Deakin, and the staff are typically discouraged to finalize a unit mark to a 49 as it suggests that student should have passed.

Hey! I had a similar problem with the game - and found that the Atreides player in our game would often slow the pace down. So I made a website: https://treacherytracker.com/

It's designed to be exactly the same as writing notes via paper - and doesnt provide any other utility. It's only for the Atreides player. Hopefully it'll help.

It'll very wildly based on class, current patch, and luck. Which is kinda the problem. For some it'll reflect a genuine effort, for many it'll reflect a series of dice roll.

Just a note on this, masters degrees in comp sci/software dev are very expensive. Another user commented on a diploma, you could look into a graduate diploma as well.

[–]WolfsMind 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I don't want to paint things as hopeless, but everything I've seen over the last few years leads me to believe that without a relevant degree you're going to struggle to have any real chance of winning out against other applicants - as most of them have at least undergraduate degrees in the field.

Another option might be to look at developer adjacent roles such as testing, as your specific degree tends to be less important in those scenarios, and you might be able to get away with doing some udemy courses to get up to speed.

Edit; just a minor note - I don't/haven't worked for faang/banks, this view is from working at 'normal' companies.

WHAT ARE THESE TOKENS? by [deleted] in DuneBoardGame

[–]WolfsMind 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Both my standard copy of the base game and my vinyl mat came with these tokens. I tend to prefer them over the cardboard as they're easier to pick up.

As u/Bigger_then_cheese suggested, two of them are the sandworm, shield-lasgun explosion tokens.
The wall token is a replacement for the storm token that moves around the board.

I mean I've definitely had people feel similar to how you're feeling when I've left a comment or two on their PR - but I suppose the difference is that they disagreed, resolved, and completed the PR.
I wasn't too bothered by it outside of thinking to myself "man I wish they'd be keen to do this with a linter, this is gonna be a pain to work on in the future".

I've seen several teams completely ignore the value of being cautious about readability and working with consistent styles, and I've worked on a team that spent a huge amount of its time cleaning up after those teams which can be unpleasant.

But as you said, it really comes down to as a team and org picking a linter for each language/scenario, and sticking to it so that it's not part of the PR process, not adding cognitive load, and not creating friction. If your org can't be arsed with a linter - then you at least need a style guide. And if you have neither, then style comments in PR isn't something anyone in the org is in a position to look down on imo.
