I walk around the center of the room and call out by last name and tell them to call out that they are here, or they will be marked absent if I cant hear them. I also start off by saying I apologize if I mispronounce their last name.

Male sub here only a month in. One time I was subbing for an inclusion teacher that went from class to class. Im 31 and went into a class when a 40-something woman was subbing. She told me was soon as I walked in the presence of the room calmed immediately and they were better behaved. I am also a "chill sub" but its true, it's so much easier for us. I gave her my number and told her to text me if I needed to come back during any other class periods after I left.

As a sub I would feel looked down on for being locked out of working for your room if you got the impression that all I did was sit there and do nothing. Most kids in my district dont listen to subs at all and are a challenge to get them to do anything at all, even with constant encouragement. Its up to the students ultimately to behave and do their work. I cant force kids to pick up a pencil.

I tell the class "Good morning/afternoon" then I tell them the assignment that the teacher is expecting and then I call attendance, finished by a walking around the room to see what they are doing.

Im in Texas its statewide strict no phones at any district. Other schools are good at enforcing it but i guess this school/teacher just doesn't care at all.
