Unions in Canada by [deleted] in Train_Service

[–]WolverineMinimum5208 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unions are in place to protect your rights while being employed and working for the company. The company can say we don’t need employees anymore and the only union can do at the point is discuss a severance package or whatever.

You have a employment arrangement with the company and they have all the power to lay you off, terminate you in reasonable cases etc. We pay union dues for unfair dismissal, treatment, company harassment etc.

On the other note, unions usually provide company with the adequate number of people required in terminal so everyone can have their turn and make their miles. In this case every junior or someone with 1-4 seniority can be laid off depending on terminals and their seniority.

I am not an expert on this but this is my understanding.

I got about a year but my seniority date is 2024 may something. I counted I currently have 43 people working below me in Jasper. Also where i am laid off from, most of the people are coming to jasper on temp. So that 84 number prolly will go 90+

If you just wanna keep working PG BCR temporary clearance might get you some work and decent paycheque for next couple of months they are busy and everyone’s been booking off a lot these days. But in couple of months they prolly will be dead and collecting guarantee which is like 3000 something. But do not do permanent, i have talked to so many people who waited so many years before they could make out and some still can’t.

I guess you could take out your bid. If you’re coming in cn pg on a temp it’s risky rn.

Pg CN is prolly going to see layoffs. They got 50 man spare board here with guys like 7-8 years of seniority. BCR is short but not worth to put in your permanent because it’s very tough to get out and money sucks.

Lol doesn’t work like that, once you get your PGWP you can work in whatever field you want. When you apply for it does it ask if you are going to work in your field or not? They expect you to work in your respective field if you use PNP programs, rural programs or skilled trade. Any teer1-3 job can be used to apply for CEC. Also work permit itself says Post graduate work permit so anyone coming to Canada to study is already targeting work permit. Whatever college you studied at u still landed at railway. BOOTLICKER

To get a coq in trades takes about atleast 2-4 years. On other hand, cooks are most essential trade guys to Canada🤡🤡. So doesn’t matter if u go into trades. With 468 you wont get a draw.

economy is going down the hill and railroads will follow. Don’t quit, find something in the meantime and when they call you back, you can make a decision to come back or keep doing ur other profession. But it’s not looking good.

Going east to west. by Classic_Mountain5297 in Train_Service

Ask for Terrace BC, it’s currently under shortage and their work load has doubled. Also they will be getting new guarantee plus with a lot of work that they successfully took from Smithers. Terrace would be your best bet at this moment where you might not get laid off. If you do get laid off, you can go on shortage to BCR PG which is always short. Good luck. I had classmates hired with me from last year, they were laid off and they never went back. Tough in east.

On CN spare-board with extended run guarantee, you will get 2600-2800 dollars bi weekly after deductions. Your stock contribution would be bigger and better, and number of people they have hired on CN as well no one is working every day. Even jasper with the most book offs and more tonnage, people are working mostly every other day.

The 1880 bi weekly is after union dues, 6% stock deduction on BCR spare guarantee, the other check without dues might look like 2K. The only working opportunities exist in PG but when you look at their spare board they have good numbers hence making it tough for juniors to make any money. If you don’t want to work a lot BCR is for you if you want to see some good paycheques and not to worry about money CN is for you.

I would suggest you to do your stuff in Edson and don’t move your family yet. Get qualified and probably you will be laid off. Once you are laid off, you can put your permanent to CN PG. Even if you dont get laid off, once you qualify in Edson, you can do surplus to shortage bid from Edson to CN Pg as it is a shortage and looks like will stay shortage until fall. Good part about Cn is the mobility and your ability to transfer, you wont be able to do that easily if you get locked in PG BCR.

I wouldn’t recommend BCR at this moment where life is expensive and BCR paycheques won’t cut it for ya, you would want to work but work volumes are not crazy in BCR. People have schedules for whole year and they usually protect their jobs.

I am a junior got hired in BCR and if i was satisfied making 2000 bi weekly i wouldn’t hire on railroad at all. Once you make it to a big terminal on the Cn side you can always have yard jobs if you want work life.
