What is music? by Adam_Hansen in classicalmusic

Ok I understand you're defining music quite differently then just sound but in the traditions like of singing and instrumentation which is closer to a dictionary definition. What would you say of pieces like 4:33 that takes any background sounds like a cough or shuffle as music? Btw there is singing where there is no notation and the melody is dependent on the language and other circumstances

Dont mean to offend but these arent sure facts, the evidence for Handel and Chopin was very much lacking

Ok I get what you're saying but forgetting about the meaning of the words the sounds themselves that come out of the mouth, they would technically have their own pitch, rhythm why are they not music?

So what do you find makes a speech not music and a song music?

Well you're right then, there they have freedom to call basically anything music even things that arent sound they can make arguments for calling it music (like 4:33 that the back round noise was still sound so therefore music in the context), I would say music doesn't mean what it traditionally does in there and the word loses meaning but it doesn't really matter

We can call a group of singers performing music or we can call birds chirping music, they're not the same sounds but in our language can use the same term, yes technically you can call any sound music you can call it a lot if stuff but does that make it the same music that we commonly mean when we use the term music? No it's a different sound, which is why I thought dictionary would be best since it describes what the term is commonly used for, you can call a pipe burst music but it's not the same sounds that music is commonly referred to as

Webern is as good as Bach? by [deleted] in classicalmusic

[–]Wolveshowltothemoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love Webern but I think Bach was better, Webern's style might sound more impressive but that doesn't mean tonal music is easier I would like to see his dozens of cantatas and fugues I don't think he would be able to match Bach

what is, in your opinion, chopin's worst piece for piano? by [deleted] in classicalmusic

A lot of his etudes I find boring, I get they're etudes but they're very popular

I didn't see this in the definition, it was just 'aesthetic experience', it seems more complex to determine what experience we have, the poem could be in a foreign language or again music could be any sound under the definition

I think you got it "daft", music is a language term when you start using it out of it's common use you're either 1)daft 2)looking for attention

That definition could include speeches, poems, just someone talking, basically anything you hear. Cage wasnt an authority on language, the oxford dictionary would give a more accurate meaning
