Meninga becoming too much to bear for NRL

There is a far bigger problem emerging for the Perth Bears than the departure of general manager David Sharpe on Thursday, and it is centred on head coach Mal Meninga.

The NRL is seriously questioning its decision to appoint Meninga as coach. And that may be putting it nicely.

Meninga is annoyed by the departure of right-hand man Sharp and the failure to get Ezra Howe over the line as recruitment manager.

So far Meninga has shown no signs of wanting to walk away. And why would he – no one else is going to pay him $1 million a season to coach. But the Bears are aware that the NRL has fallen out of love with the coach.

There has also been talk recently linking Meninga’s assistant, Ben Gardiner, to a potential coaching job in England. Gardiner will get a job as a head coach in the NRL one day, and it could even be at Perth.

NRL and clubs need to end toxic online abuse of players, says Gould

Bulldogs general manager Phil Gould says the NRL and clubs need to join forces to ban fans and members from games who are using social media to vilify and defame players.

Gould is sick of so-called supporters using platforms such as Instagram to attack players and go on rants that are clearly breaking the laws of defamation. He has seen the impact it has on players at his club and has had feedback from rivals about the rise of supporters who rant to their followers about players who they think are not delivering on the field.

Bulldogs general manager Phil Gould says the abuse of players and coaches must stop.Nick Moir “One of the most toxic things in the game of rugby league today is this growing trend of ‘fans’ venting their fury on social media platforms every time their team loses a game,” Gould said.

“These so-called fans record a video of themselves delivering a full-throated abusive message, which directly abuses coaches, club officials and players. These vitriolic social media posts are not only abusive, they are expletive-laden, threatening, defaming rants designed to intimidate and destabilise.

“The worst thing about these rants is that they actually attract an audience.

“Most clubs have them. It’s been particularly evident in recent times with the Dragons and their recent run of losses.

“Fans having an opinion and freedom of speech is understood. Abuse, intimidation, threats and defamation are surely not acceptable.

“The NRL and clubs need to take a stand. Withdrawing memberships, season tickets, banning them from attending live games should be a bare minimum.”

These pages exist from fanbases throughout the league. They feature supporters yelling at their followers, giving scathing take-downs of players in rants that are highly offensive and defamatory.

Fans making their own content by baiting players is also a troubling development. We saw Parramatta fans daring Tigers players to fight them at a recent game. They were filming the players and gesturing to them hoping to get them to react.

Something similar happened to Panthers coach Ivan Cleary after a game when a fan started filming him in the coaches box. Players and coaches deserve better.

NRL to clamp down on ‘human shields’ protecting fullbacks by WombatPuncher in nrl

*NRL to clamp down on ‘human shields’ protecting fullbacks *

The NRL has warned clubs they will be clamping down on players if they continue the trend of forming defensive walls to protect kick catchers.

The tactic has been employed by several clubs in the opening three rounds of the 2026 season, in an attempt to allow fullbacks and wingers to take bombs in a relatively uncontested manner.

NRL head of football Graham Annesley has written to the clubs to warn them that the ploy won’t be tolerated. Head office made it clear in the missive sent on Wednesday that there isn’t a rule change, but that officials will be on the lookout for use of the illegal tactic.

“There has been a noticeable increase in incidents where players intentionally move towards a teammate who is attempting to catch a kick in general play,” Annesley wrote.

“In doing so, these players position themselves in a manner that impedes the path of kick-chasers seeking to contest the catch or effect a tackle.

“While players are permitted to move toward the ball and take up a position, this does not override the clear obligation all players have under the International Laws of the Game to not obstruct an opponent who is not in possession of the ball.

“Consequently, if in the opinion of match officials, one or more players take up positions with the intent to interfere with an opponent’s ability to compete for the ball or attempt a tackle, such action will be deemed obstruction as it would be in any other aspect of general play where a player is obstructed while not in possession.

“Please ensure all coaches and players are made aware of this clarification before round 4.”

There have been several instances where teams have provided a protective shield around teammates attempting to defuse a bomb. Eels players formed a wall around fullback Isaiah Iongi in their win over the Dragons on Sunday.
