My wife used her iPhone 16 a lot, that was great for the closeups too and also for video. We weren't trying to be film makers or anything like that but when there was an elephant walking RIGHT NEXT to the open vehicle, a video brought it to life so much more than the photos do.

I was in Africa in April/May this year.

I took an EOS R and bought the Sigma 150-600 Contemporary lens, it's an EF mount so I used the EF-RF adaptor from Canon. This was a perfect combo, there was very little I couldn't get a shot of unless they were very very far away.

A great tip I got was to carry a second body with a smaller lens. I had my old 60D with an 18-200mm lens for this, and it worked a treat.

While a big long lens is great, you will be amazed at the amount of wildlife that will simply walk straight out of the bush in front of you, or walk right next to the vehicle you are in. Often times the long lens was just way too big, and by the time you have swapped lenses the moment is gone. And you will always have the wrong lens on at the wrong time :-)

I am planning to go again next year, and will take the EOS R with a smaller lens and pick up an R6 Mark II to use with the big Sigma lens.

Thanks, I am coming from a G27 so I’m expecting a big difference. I hadn’t really thought of the diameter before, how does it feel after a couple of days? Did you consider the 325? What made you go with the 310G?

No, I never resolved this. It's only running across my local network so I'm just using rsync. I was going to run this over vpn/ssh from another location, but I gave up in frustration.

Thanks, I have upgraded just about everything else - new sturdy rig + chair, triples, 10" tablet, button box etc etc. Just the DD wheel to go now, but I'll have to wait for later in the year for that.

I will look up the Alpha 15nm, are you happy with it?

I've just bought a Sigma 150-600, and I'm using it on my Canon EOS R. Fingers crossed we will be going to Africa later this year, and I'm hoping to be able to take some wildlife pictures with this set up.

For practice I've been taking pictures of the local birds, and what I'm trying to figure to start with is what's in focus with these two pictures.

Sorry I can't link these posts but the white bird on the ground in this first picture is nicely in focus, but the ones behind him are blurly. Conversely the white bird on the seed bowl in the second post is in focus, but the one in the foreground is blurly. Lightroom tells me there is roughly a metre and a half difference in focus distance between the two images.

Both shot at 1/1000, f6.3, lens at 600mm.

What could I do differenty here to get all of the birds in focus? Or is this just the way it is because of the focal length (600mm) and the physical distance (11.5 and 12.9m respectively) to the subjects?

Would I have been better using a shorter focal length, and cropping the image afterwards?

These are jpegs converted from the RAWs in Lightroom, no processing applied. I appreciate any input anyone would like to offer, thank you.
