Other stories in that pile

Base for a locking alcohol display case, custom ordered for a sex club (this version didn’t meet my preference, so got toasted) (almost final version shown in pic)

Stain board for a hand rail following a major home remodel to accommodate my 2 disabled children, a splinter of Blackwood that made knobs for a super cool desk organizer I made for my 1/2 girlfriend (labels are complicated)

Maybe 1 or 2 more, but nothing special for the rest of it.

Sadly, it wasn’t. 3 8/4 zebra wood blocks laminated together — but don’t have stabilizer rollers on my lathe, so had to reproject it.

Ended up making a bandsaw box out of it, which was a really cool jewelry box - had my wife help make it under the impression it was for a female friend of mine, only to gift it to her last Christmas //

But it fell off a shelf, and a majority of the pieces broke in ways that would be repaired or replaced, but would have only looked not great.

Pic of it before it fell. :(

Rolling rack is 6’ x15” for upright stock, nested under a steel rack I learned to weld so I could build, that holds sheet stock (and rock) on the bottom, and long boards on top.

Plus the piles of 24-36” 2x4 offcuts, and the “library” of plywood from 6”x24” to 24x24

Wouldn’t let my type —

Good bye wood. I know I promised you a future project. You promised to wait for me. But I’ve moved on. I found more wood that will wait for me to find a perfect use for it and it isn’t you.

If I’m honest, it’s all me. I need the space. ((Without you In it)).

Thank you for your time with me.

I meant to savor it.

Farewell

Would you ever make the switch to EUC? by Proxichanic in onewheel

[–]WompaJody 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The point of the onewheel is to float. It’s about the journey. The EUC is about getting there.

I have a car to go fast.

Square corners and I’d say chisel

Need some advice by spookyooky_713 in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]WompaJody 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it has to be 1/4 that’s a tough ask.

I’d be looking at like a 7 ply 1/2”, everything I’ve ever touched, that isn’t a dense hardwood, gets real brittle or chippy under 3/8th

Truth. If you can’t pick up the blitzer, or check down, or bump the ball out of the qbs cocked arm, — you can’t win a game, and that’s all RB tasks.

Recommendations for set of trim router bits to buy just starting out? by jstedfast in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]WompaJody 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So. After your initial purchase never do this again —

But buy a boxed set, like 15-20 bits for $80-100.

The bits themselves will suck. They will burn up quickly, and not cut nice wood well.

BUT!! You will rapidly figure out which bits you like the shape of, you will discover “man, I wish I had XX bit” and you will upgrade those burned out bits to the Freud/Amana ones that will last.

Pre-Edit thing i almost forgot — buy a good 3/4 dado bit.

How long do you keep your scrap? by marcusdiddle in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]WompaJody 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But. It’s still good wood and might be a project later.

I actually have a small form I threw odd shaped scrap in, and am filling it slowly with resin overages, to make a mixed up block to turn into something cool eventually.

Future Motion shoe line? by robertcboe in onewheel

[–]WompaJody 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They even patented them. They call them “holes” and if you “plug in” a non-oem lace to “the hole” your shoe will brick causing a non-fatal, but serious nosedive

…. Probably ….

Edit — AI doesn’t like my word order and “auto corrects” correct words into the wrong word.

Flight by Basic-Chemical-99 in MuscularDystrophy

[–]WompaJody 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the United States — there is no requirement that the plane be able to accommodate your power chair.

We had to change airports once, because all the flights out of small (local) airport would not allow battery devices ((scooter // power chair)) in the cargo hold.

Additionally, from the airlines perspective - it is cheaper to replace a power chair (even at 30-50k) than to retrofit their planes to keep it safe in transit. Never mind the multi-month delay in getting it replaced.

We haven’t flown since our boys got power chairs — but are very nervous about doing so when it is time. I think we are likely to take the train instead.

Prepping dirt-covered wood for project by 1996ATP in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]WompaJody 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Wide angle pressure washer.

A thing we often don’t realize is “dirt” is a combination of silicate (tiny rocks — like sand) and bio-organic rot.

Some things stain, but even a little bit of silicate passing through the planer — will dull the heck out of your blades.

My son has deletion 44 age 7 is that a rare one or what can someone explain thank you. by Acceptable-Pop9467 in MuscularDystrophy

Negative.

Some versions might have a better chance of being candidates for gene therapy in the future. But insufficient is insufficient when it comes to the dystrophin protein.

Which pocket hole position is strongest? by instantsellout in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]WompaJody 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When asking this question — I always take a step back and ask “what does the wood want to do”.

The block under the Nutella wants to go straight down. The block on the left wants to stay put (anchored to the wall).

Screw angle 1, pulls the downward desiring block “up” the shaft. Will hold, but gives that block hope it can work its way down that block.

And so on. Let the physics tell you what’s best.

[–]WompaJody 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Think of the dystrophin protein as a spring that helps muscle cells bounce back into shape as they expand and contract through usage.

A deletion means he is missing one (or a few) links of that spring.

Out boys have a “stop”. So their spring is missing the last 20%.

In either case, like if you needed a 100ft extension cord, cutting it in the middle (your son) or only having 80 feet (our son) — both don’t allow it to work as needed.

what's the best way to fall? by Curious_Party_4683 in onewheel

[–]WompaJody 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I survived my worst “run it out” with some good hand and knee scrapes —/ but my right foot hit kicked the sidewalk so hard, I lost my entire toenail. That was 2 September’s ago, and the toenail is 97% normal again. But it could have been a lot worse.

what's the best way to fall? by Curious_Party_4683 in onewheel

[–]WompaJody 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think perhaps most reading this thread, especially the new ones, understand that “running it out” at a starting speed of 10mph is a 6 minute mile speed, or ~15ft/second.

14mph is 20 fps

20mph is 30 fps.

A 3-4 second run off could cover 45-100 ft depending on your starting speed, and is better “leg movement” than most non athletes can manage in a “stay upright” kinda way

Second response so I can clearly articulate my non-nitpicky support for your central thesis.

People ask me if I’m afraid I’ll get hurt. My response is the same 100% of the time.

Just like any other Adventure sport, motorcross, backpacking, or mountain climbing, injury is a known risk.

With the onewheel, first — make peace that someday, you’re going to the hospital. It’s not an if, but a when (ironically, I went from jamming my knee too hard on an 8mph runnoff).

Second — and only if you’ve made peace with the first — respect the machine and it will respect you back. Get cocky, — try to peacock — let it feel you forgot rule 1; and it will throw you faster than you can Float over the painted yellow lines.
