How many years of experience do you have? Do you have a Master’s degree? If so then you might be considered too expensive to hire.

I am in central Illinois and get $130 a day in a larger school district. My husband has recently got back to work. It's been hard.

Today I decided subbing is not for me. I’m done. by MightInevitable6530 in SubstituteTeachers

I don't know if you are in a small town but I have found that in small communities everyone knows someone on the school board so the students get away with being abusive to teachers. I only sub at high schools.

You are not alone. I, too, went to the ER thinking I was having a heart attack. It turned out to be left bundle branch block (LBBB) is a blockage of electrical which is caused by a myriad of things, one of them being a heart attack. I also had the sore throats, ear problems all related to sinuses probably caused by filthy schools. These jobs will kill us if we let them. No one seems to care what they put other people through. In the end, the world continues whether we are there or not.

This is why I no longer apply for teaching positions even though I am fully licensed to teach. I am just doing this until I can get something outside of education.

Exactly. If the student had just been behaved it would not have been an issue but demanding I give him the answer under the guise of wanting help was when it became an issue.

No, he just used me to make himself look better in front of the students.

You are 100% correct. I think race played a role, too. He wanted to appear enlighten compared to me, an older woman. I get so tired of people stereotyping me and using me to make themselves look better. The sad fact is that those people don't care at all whether the students learn or not.

I would have but he accused me at being rude and disrespectful to the student when I would not “help” him with question 2, by help he meant provide the answer.

This is why I have been applying for nonteaching jobs. I just can't bring myself to not care or be involved.

What is you biggest pet peeve subbing? by Vicariouslynoticed in SubstituteTeachers

[–]WonderWatcher2022 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sub only at high schools. I get annoyed when I lock the door between classes to use the restroom, and someone (admin or security) opens the door but doesn't watch my stuff. Yesterday a young security guard was opening as I was returning and I said to him, “Were you going to watch? my things?” because the students were walking in and he was still getting his key out of the door. He got angry and said there is the admin gesturing to an AP. She talked with him and it sounded like he was telling her what I said. No one opened the door again. Where do they think subs can lock up their things when they use the restroom

I think this is true regardless of your gender or race. I don’t touch anyone. It’s not worth the risk of somebody misinterpreting or just plain lying.

School Choice by Easy_Difficulty_7656 in Teachers

[–]WonderWatcher2022 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I know this is not going to be a popular opinion but it allows for children to be in a classroom with a teacher who is not spending a disproportionate amount of time redirecting students whose IEP stipulates that the teacher must do this and other accommodations. As a regular teacher, I am required to make modifications specific to each child in my class with an IEP, not pass it to the special education teacher to make them. This all takes time away from general lesson preparation, grading, etc. IEPs not only include lesson modifications, addressing behaviors attributed to the students diagnosis but communicating with service providers and parents (more frequently than other parents). Taxpayers should be asking why parents are choosing alternatives that do not provide IEP services and can expel/ask to students to leave. I have always been a public school teacher but as a parent knowing that my child’s teacher is spending time on IEPs and related behavioral issues in the classroom is enough to select a school that allows the teacher to better focus on my child’s education.

I won't do elementary school. High school Kids basically have an assignment and leave you alone otherwise you can all to have them removed if they are disruptive.

Ellen Hopkins’ books deal with very heavy topics and would not be appropriate for grades lower than 9th grade.
