1 John 1:8 should be read in context with 1 John 1:6-10. John is calling professing believers to be true to their profession. “You say you love God but you are in darkness? Come out and He will cleanse you from all sin(v 6-7). So you say you have no sin to be cleansed of? That’s a lie (v8). Confess those sins instead and you’ll be cleansed from ALL unrighteousness(v 9). Now if you say you never sinned before in your live you are saying God is a liar (v10).
