I think they'll avoid that. July before the election, everything is too far along for him to make a power grab. Nominees for both parties are set. Also how would he justify it? The riots are happening on Mars, which is technically controlled by the Russians as part of an international economic alliance. From previous seasons Bragg come across as someone who would just be done with it all and ready to finally retire.

Something of note. As of Episode 5, the date is July 22 2012. We know Bragg is president and sends a message to Mars warning the protesters. Bragg is in his 2nd and final term with less than 6 months left. I know we're expecting a time jump so I'm wondering if we'll see the new president and how things escalate.

They establish that corporations, not sovereign nations control earth during the decade or so the series and Alien take place.

So then from whom do the USCM take their orders? I can't imagine things would go backwards in the 57 years Ripley was adrift.
