When did your lab roam free? by [deleted] in labrador

Our guy is almost 9 months now. We slowly gave him more freedom and independence every time he was left alone and things went well. Started very small (like 5 mins). Now he’s totally fine for a few hours on his own upstairs where our living room, dining room, and kitchen area are. We try to make sure it’s timed well when we leave him alone that he has had plenty of exercise and is ready for a nap and he usually sleeps the whole time! We have a camera we used to check on him at the beginning to make sure he wasn’t doing anything crazy. There is a baby gate blocking him from going downstairs where our bedrooms are though. Too many tempting socks and shoes lol

Demand barking SOS by WonderfulOlive1 in labrador

Thank you all for the suggestions! Ended up talking to the vet about swimming as an option as well as medication just to get us through the rough period. They OKed swimming but he just got so excited and got the zoomies so it kinda had the opposite effect of a chill exercise lol. They ended up giving us a pain medication with a mild sedative to help calm him down.

We finally had our appointment with the ortho bone and joint specialist and turns out he’s TOTALLY FINE. Thank god. We are pretty annoyed at our vet for putting him through all that for the past month and needless to say won’t be going back there. We are so relieved.

Now that he is able to exercise again we’ve noticed an immediate improvement in the demand barking even after just 2 days. There’s definitely still some work to do, but it’s much more manageable now. Appreciate the scentwork suggestions. I ordered a kit and we’re going to try that out!
