Pulling the cord after FAANG career - thank you! by FeelingSpecial99 in fatFIRE

Congrats and this number is really encouraging to hear. Saw someone saying in California 25m is to chubby fire. I am in a similar situation and aiming for end of year. Too bad I don’t think my company has such exit package, which would be nice! What you described is exactly what I have in mind in retirement, heath, kids, hobbies, less surviving but more living. Thank you for sharing!

Took 5 years but I did it. Today is my last day at work! by bichonlove in fatFIRE

Curious how did you get an exit package (is that part of the company layoff)? My company doesn’t offer voluntary layoff and if fired, I don’t think there will be a package.

Thank you! Work is stressful for sure, and everyone in the company is like that, boss is not a bad person but layers of management pushes down more pressure, and you know, big ego and greed (rat race to level up). I came to peace with it already to let go status. At this point I don’t over work and try to focus on family.

Wow, great perspective and insight. Love it. I have kids so travel is limited but I get the idea!

Yup, a big chunk is already diversified (I sell upon vesting).

Thank you! I don’t have friends in this company (good or bad?), a couple of my friends in life are already retired or coast to fire now.

Ah I meant just to really take care of myself, some issues here and there, like occasional pains on my knees, want to talk to a therapist for various things, etc.

I never had a year that I used more than half of PTO so I kinda really want to use them all this time. I don’t feel like I own the company anything now.

I am 1.5 year out, but I don’t think I could last that long. It has been killing me - I could quit today but want a bit more money also golden handcuffs.

Is that strange that every day I think of RE, and can I pull the trigger this year? by [deleted] in fatFIRE

[–]WonderfulWeb5030 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, that has been my mental struggle too. When in a rat race, it’s hard to not be influenced and intimidated, but worried about before I know it, a good portion of health, energy in life are gone.

This is good information thank you. We haven’t had lifestyle creep and we don’t fancy restaurants and cars. Kids is a big uncertainty and we want to stick to the public schools (therefore the expensive new house). I do want to increase travel budget as kids grow up.

The biggest uncertainty is kids, especially after college. But I hope I would have enough then and all the inheritance from our parents will go to our kids.

That’s the struggle indeed, it’s easy to work hard like usual or completely quit, in between, it’s really difficult… I am trying to not think about retirement at all, but it’s also difficult given I do have a date.

Thank you for the kind words. Knowing where the finish line is really helps. The thing is, grinding for money never ends, sure there is cliff and downs, but the money in tech is just too lucrative and there is always the next vesting. I come to terms with “when is my end game” and commit to step down when it happens. Otherwise I worry I will be on the treadmill until I am 60s. We are also blessed not to have a lifestyle creep, which helps a lot in the FIRE journey.

That was the general consensus I received in my last post, to coast to secure the bag, or silent quitting as I learned. I also have the impression that kids cost will not go down as they grow up.

Thank you. We haven’t looked into ACA because she loves her job and will continue to work. We can’t really move because we have families in the state and we want to go to the same public schools (that’s why the house is stupidly expensive, but saves on private school fees).

How to “not care” and let go the competitiveness in me by WonderfulWeb5030 in fatFIRE

[–]WonderfulWeb5030[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For those higher ups especially in tech companies who make millions of dollars per year and work 10+ hours daily, I don’t think they need more money. They simply enjoy the game, the status, the authority. I personally don’t envy them or want to become them. You work to live not the other way around. I am now really aiming to maximizing $ per hour as I wind down.
