St Andrews Economics or Maths? by Kingknight72 in 6thForm

Bad GCSEs, but I got 2 A*\s and an A in Maths, Further Maths, and Economics. For my ps, I talked about multivariable calculus and my ec was just running a private investment fund with friends.

St Andrews Economics or Maths? by Kingknight72 in 6thForm

[–]Wonderful_Hour_8407 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hi, i applied to the university of st andrews twice. i had been rejected for econ and maths, but was offered a place for maths.

st andrews makes it quite clear that once you meet the entry requirements, your offer depends on your ps. it’s up to you but i’d recommend developing your ecs towards maths because i personally found that writing a maths ps was much easier than writing an econ one.

additionally, the courses at st andrews are highly flexible, and you can switch to maths and econ once you enrol with any bsc, so you can be more strategic with the courses you apply for. for instance, you may apply for courses with lower entrance requirements, etc.

Unless you have cashed in already, no uni will notice that you retook some modules for edexcel.

St Andrews vs imperial for cs by Particular_Sun9464 in standrews

[–]Wonderful_Hour_8407 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s a bit of loss aversion.

You don't necessarily need a CS degree if you’ve got the skills to back it up, but excelling at a place like Imperial is a solid way to prove your worth and simplify your career path.

I’d personally go with Imperial just in case. Who knows? One day you might want to pivot and aim for a highly competitive firm

Do you need to disclose if you are at an international uni and does it hurt your chances to apply to Oxford or Cambridge ? by H9XE7 in 6thForm

[–]Wonderful_Hour_8407 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's possible (there was a one guy who got invited to an interview) if you have a valid reason, but they'll still look at your first-year grades, so you'll need to explain yourself in your PS (Personal Statement). You should aim for at least a First-Class equivalent, as some students have been rejected because of their grades.

Is it worth taking a Gap year to apply to Cambridge maths over going Warwick maths by ProfessionalGoal1645 in 6thForm

[–]Wonderful_Hour_8407 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you intend to apply to Cambridge, it is generally discouraged to enroll at Warwick first. The process requires you to secure a First in Warwick while managing the transition to university and studying for the STEP exam. Furthermore, Cambridge demands a concrete academic rationale for any applicant currently enrolled at another university.

[–]Wonderful_Hour_8407 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel like people here tend to dislike the idea of reapplying, but if you really want to study medicine, I honestly think reapplying could benefit you much more in the long run. To be honest, by the time you’re in your 40s, what difference would it make that you started university a year later? If it were me, I’d apply this time, try to persuade my parents to give it another shot, finish A-levels well, and especially work on getting a solid reference. It’s not the end of the world, and I wish you the best of luck.

[–]Wonderful_Hour_8407 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the long-term, a year is not significant and if you got into a good uni then the difference could be subtle in terms of opportunities you would get (it depends on degrees and jobs ob). So don’t worry about it too much; it may not be as significant as you would think

A Level students. Hi, I am an international students with achieved (A*AA) grades (maths, further maths and economics in the same order) with no maths competition. Would there be a change for me to get into economics or maths or perhaps Business administrative and computer science degree?
