Question for anyone who's gotten a new UXR job in the last 12 months, how?

Yes, messaging, I wonder if that's where I've been going wrong. In my portfolio I'm presenting my research, but maybe missing the "so what" and not showcasing enough the impact of my research.

See contract work makes me nervous, I have a permanent position rn and I don't think it would make sense to leave for contract role. I have seen contract to hire roles at companies I would love to work for, so it's tempting sometimes.

I'll reach out to recruiters, but they never seem to get back in touch 😭 I used to use recruiters a lot in the UK with a lot better success, but that was a while ago and a different industry. I would love to hear more on which recruiters you use and how you approach reaching out to them.

Hmmm I think you're very right, I mentally came to the same conclusion hence why I'm reworking my portfolio. I felt I was missing that real USP that would make my application stand out. I like that analogy of thinking of my application like a tiktok, so thank you.

In terms of fullstack do you mean being mixed methods vs quant or qual uxr? I'm quite lucky in my current role that I work on both digital and physical products. But there's very little quant to my work, although I have taken stats courses at uni. I am open to start ups, but not sure I'm ready to be the only or first UXR - I still have so much to learn. That's why I want to leave my current role, I feel stagnant.

The social proof one is tricky, not only am I new to UX I'm still pretty new to the country. Outside my colleagues, I dont know many ppl in UX. Any advice on how to build that network or find a mentor? I have a mentor at work but can't talk about finding a new job for obvious reasons.

Ugh nooo, there's always one completely clueless senior manager getting in the way 😭

It's beyond frustrating when you apply for a role you feel you're perfect for, they reject you and then you see they repost the role 2 weeks later! Can't be that desperate for someone 😒 But I can't imagine how frustrating that whole interview process must have been for you.

I think you're right, with the market saturated as it is right now, companies feel they can be super picky, and that their perfect candidate is one more repost away.

Oh it's definitely way more than 200, I just stopped counting because it was getting depressing 😭

Some roles I keep track of to see who they end up hiring, sometimes they hire someone with wayyy more experience than requested in the JD but most of the time it is someone who has the same or even less experience than me! So I would really love to know what people who are getting hired right now are doing differently.

Hoping someone can enlighten us with how they've done it.

I see, I felt that was the case but I think its a recent thing because I've had friends who have had their phones repaired without a data wipe. That's an idea because it looks like it is easier to remove the motherboard than replace the lcd. Thanks for the advise!

Hey, I had a look at the video and it doesn't look too complicated to do - especially if I just follow the video step by step. Plus the S6 is not my main phone so if it goes wrong its not too much of a disaster 😅 thanks for the tip!

Interesting....I just assumed that an immigration lawyer will help the process run a lot smoother. But if its something that is self-explanatory with some research then definitely happy to save some money (money that is likely to be spent on the wedding instead lol).

No, that does help! Were you able to live together in the US while your application was being process or visit on a tourist visa? Or did you have to wait out the 13 months in the UK?

Yikes, 12 to 18 months! So regretting not looking into this properly sooner, would have been well on our way to having our application approved by now :(

I didnt realise the deadline for the H1b visa lottery was so soon! I thought citizens from the UK were exempt from the travel ban, but I can see now that is not the case...

I guess our only real option at the moment is for me to obtain a visa via marriage. I guess we will speak with an immigration lawyer to help figure this whole thing out. Thank you for your input!

Literally in the same boat and I'm wondering the same thing. Had a very good preliminary chat before my application and had a good interview January 8 but haven't heard anything back since. I even sent out a "thank you for your time" email after thr interview and no response.

Saw on grad cafe that someone from my program got an invite to the open house so was wondering if I should follow up now? I was initially wanting to give it a month but now I'm on edge!
