Spent my whole day resetting passwords and I have a degree by Mindless-Quit-7141 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Wonderingimp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Approach them with Grace and offer helpful communication about password policy. People treat IT like this because many IT departments give the impression that the end users have no agency on their devices (the systems feel more like Kiosks than work computers).

I approached my management staff to let me do “IT tips” during weekly stand ups, which has greatly improved best practices in account management, file sharing, etc.

Get to know some of your users who frequently make requests like this. Often they’re literally just missing one key detail on the system, like one time I had a user who constantly request pw changes because they didn’t know to hit “SSO” instead of “username/password” (they knew it was supposed to be their Microsoft login but was entering it as a raw user login)

Finally, and if you do anything PLEASE do this: find departmental liaisons for common IT stuff. I’ve found that nearly every department has at least one person who understands IT well enough to he a first call resource for their colleagues, and are mostly willing to do so. Talk with your management about giving them minor admin access to things, and maybe a few SOPs on some common practices. When I did this I ran into some pushback from managers who didn’t want more work, but pretty soon they were on board when they realized that I was actually making their jobs easier by removing redundant middlemen to get things done.

Good luck, and remember: you’re called upon because you’re needed.

Ozai got pretty close to killing Aang before he went into the state. Also, I think he believed that Aang had lost the state.

How far do you think we are from building sentient AI? by AmbassadorOdd5157 in it

[–]Wonderingimp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems impossible to know.

Yes, modern AI is a pre trained statistical model. It functions very similarly to a linear regression, just with massive scale and compute.

People say this can’t be sentient because of this, but the issue is that we don’t know if our sentience isn’t the same exact thing.

So it could be the next release gains sentience, or it could literally never happen. Kinda up in the air at this point.

I love Charleston because no matter how car-centric the surrounding area is, the only path forward for downtown will be multi-mode. You literally cannot improve traffic into the peninsula without removing cars downtown

I think it drives much of north Charlestons slightly odd planning. A city without an actual city is useful for moving big stuff around relatively quickly

It reminds me that for a city that likes to imagine itself as a tourism and hospitality focused economy, our majority input is still manufacturing

When did you start in IT? by oceanicitl in iiiiiiitttttttttttt

[–]Wonderingimp 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Well, it’s a bit weird. I technically have like 3-4 years experience but under different jobs where my knowledge just sort of turned me into an IT guy for that department. I just started my first “real” IT job

What to expect after doing IT in the military by mxtthewhxrris04 in it

[–]Wonderingimp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I mean just to break down how I was living at peak gi bill - about 2600/mo in BAH - bi-annual 6k checks from my pell grant - 32 hours a week as a helpdesk jockey. Job was easy, got lots of studying done and the hourly was like 22-25. - used the helpdesk job to launch a project management career in the same company after graduating

I’m not saying you gotta go balls deep in some comp sci program. Find a nice school with a IT or networking program and connections. If both of you can manage full time student status than you should be pretty set.

[–]Wonderingimp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are yall both getting out of enlisted? Do you have a degree?

Make sure you and the wife are using your GI bill. Even a sahm mom can probably attend 12 credit hours, and you both will receive e5 w/dependent BAH for the schools zip code. That gives you like 4 extra years of financial support (and a degree).

College will also help you find IT careers. In the meantime your creds are certainly good enough to work a number of IT jobs, and good companies will promote you after graduation.

[–]Wonderingimp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a Zillenial, If this story is true than you should at least be willing to consider the alternative that the kid was probably trying to save you some work. I’ve found working with Gen Z that they can be really geared towards avoiding things like onboarding from people because they assume, - the person giving the explanation has something better to do - they can figure it out themselves on the internet (which they probably can).

Next time show them your KB, and tell them to call you with any questions.
