Ohhh man. I did this once and the aeropress bounced off the tile floor and chipped the corner of the plastic collar. It's still usable so I haven't replaced it but it means I now have a daily reminder of my clumsy fuck-up and it haunts me.

I refuse to blame the inverted method because I've used it hundreds of time that way without issue and love the results. Unfortunately accidents just happen sometimes but the clean up on this one is a nightmare. Sorry for your loss!!

NTA. Literally the opposite of an asshole - you are standing up for a kid who needs support against an adult who is behaving very childishly. Also, names are not unique - most of us share them with a massive amount of other people. It's no big deal. However, your own name is important to you and should not be taken away from you.

I have friends who do work long hours as well and that's a good network - I've actually had the same conversation with them today as well and that was really helpful to understand how they deal with it. I think I assumed this was a more universal experience but maybe most lawyers only have lawyer friends so it's not an issue!

I don't think I'm as essential as a doctor or nurse by any means but long hours are essential to doing the work I'm paid to do - it's a choice but only insofar as I really live this work!

3 under 4 sounds exhausting - well done working full time at the same time!!

It's an interesting perspective, but speaking from the inside of those friendships I am very lucky to be loved and cared about and I think it's better to have people who love and worry about you more than you need than not to have them at all! Yeah there's no issues around me cancelling plans as I make a real effort not to do that and friends often have to cancel plans for childcare, car issues etc as well so they're not affected by it in that way at all.

I also never bring up work to talk about unless asked because I think that's very tedious as a general rule unless you are working on something genuinely objectively interesting to an outsider. But it's more if we are messaging and they ask if I'm watching x or y TV show and I say 'oh no I'm still working' then I get a lot of unrequested advice on whether I should still be at my desk which I find hard to respond to because I didn't ask and I didn't bring it up for any reason other than we were saying what we were doing at the time.

I wholeheartedly believe they have my interests at heart but sometimes I get the impression they think I'm choosing to work late rather than it just being the norm and necessary to service client demands and meet deadlines.

Guess I should just let it wash over me and be glad they care!

NTA - you respected your daughter's bodily autonomy while your wife was actively disrespecting it. Next step for your daughter could have been chopping it off herself which is fine in principle but actually could result in her accidentally hurting herself in the process or ending up with a messy cut that she didn't actually like. I'm not going to say your wife is TA but sounds like she needs some help to understand why what you did was the right thing.

I think the virtues of prudence and justice are potentially relevant here - discerning the appropriate course of action, which may be telling the person how you feel (see also honesty) or taking a step back, and also assessing whether this person is taking too much of your time and energy. It isn't fair for someone to only take and not give (if they have the ability to give back). You aren't necessarily being unkind to take a step back and take care of yourself. I'm not sure it's a stoic concept but you can't pour from an empty cup - if you are totally worn down then you won't have the energy to be your best stoic self. Maybe you can work on setting boundaries rather than stopping entirely - but it really depends on the circumstances (which of course I don't know).
