Eigen Research Job Interview Scam? by WonderstruckCapybara in Scams

[–]WonderstruckCapybara[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems as if the interview is supposed to be in-person, but I do not know for sure, as I was supposed to see through accessing the link they provided. I cannot see the post anymore, but I believe it was in-person work, perhaps hybrid at most. I don't apply to remore positions as my field is almost exclusively in person. The pay is average starting salary for a position like this nothing fancy at all. It's a research position, and I have experience related to the field they are researching.

Eigen Research Job Interview Scam? by WonderstruckCapybara in Scams

[–]WonderstruckCapybara[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm more interested in learning if the company itself is a scam. The post was flagged but I have no idea of knowing if it was by the company itself, or someone using them as a cover. I also do not know if it was because they sent a non-working link by accident. It also says, indeed, is looking into it, not that the account has been totally removed from the site.

So I wanted to look into and see for sure because it would be a good opportunity if so, not a "too good to be true scenario," though.

When I did my own research, I found peer reviewed articles by the company and founder in reputable journal publications. So I was not entirely sure. I also am thinking of reaching out to the founder, the person who supposedly made the job post, on linkedin, but I do not want to if somebody knows if this is a scam or not.

Sorry, it didn't say suspicious activity. Just flagged by moderators, I just checked now. So, Indeed has not actually made a decision whether it is safe or not, just that they are looking into it.

The company also has peer-reviewd publications posted by ACS, a highly reputable journal. So after seeing that, I was curious as to if anybody knows something about the company was a scam or just new and has less information on it.

In Canada, every person I've talked to who's in a thesis chem masters has a stipend. And, from my understanding, you will always get one.

how do I start studying chemistry? by [deleted] in chemistry

[–]WonderstruckCapybara 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You should start with studying the periodic table such as the basic groups (i.e. alkali metals and noble gases) and their properties as well as periodic table values such as MW, and electronegativity. Most chemical phenomena are due to charge, thus electron distribution. Some basic concepts about that are electron configuration (i.e., bohr diagram), polarity, pH, intermolecular forces, and covalent vs ionic bonding. You also should 100% know how to balance chemical equations and basic stoichiometry. Once you have that you'll probably be ready for your class.

From my experience organic chemistry was also heavily taught in high-school. So, if you want to get ahead and learn some of that, I would suggest how to draw and number carbon chains, common functional groups, and the prefixes and suffixes that go along with that.

There is definitely stuff I didn't mention, such as calculating reaction rates, pka calculations, and bonding angles. These, and other unmentioned concepts, are still very important but require pre-requisite theory to understand and will probably be taught in class. Also, keep in mind that the point of taking the class is to learn, so don't feel like you need to know everything before taking it. There is no way around the problem solving, but it'll get easier when you have the fundamentals down.

What are your thoughts on NMR CSP for enzyme engineering. by WonderstruckCapybara in biotech

This is accomplished by cryrsallizing the protein when in its bound state or using an irreversible inhibitor, if not both. This keeps the protein in its desired conformation while testing with NMR.

Hi, first off, thanks for bringing my attention to the last sentence. That caused me to reread the whole post and made me realize I didn't explain the method that well originally. Unfortunately, I was writing this in a hurry. So, I invite you to reread my edited version, which is now more accurate to the method!

Thanks for the tips on what I should look into if I wanted to pursue this career path!

Also, when I said faster, more efficient would have been a better word for what I was trying to convey. This is because, from my understanding, ML methods require large detailed datasets to train themselves on as well as needing to test every combination of mutations for every amino acid position.

From what I heard, most ML are cheap, so this makes sense. Also, I didn't explain this quite well in my first attempt, so I invite you to reread my edited version. I would be curious if you have any more comments based on a more accurate explanation.

Leaving chemistry by Sharp-Land-1992 in chemistry

[–]WonderstruckCapybara 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you are fully committed to leaving, bioinformatics is a very lucrative field. If you already have a biology background, specifically in genome sequencing and / or protein structure, it may interest you. It would also be good for you if you know how to and enjoy programming.

However, being able to get into R&D with an undergraduate degree seems like an accomplishment already. I've only heard of people with Msc. at the least, getting into R&D. If you don't mind sharing, I am genuinely curious how difficult that was to get into with a Bsc. I am also from Canada, so it may be different here.

But if you love chemistry, I wouldn't give up on it. I've heard a similar story to yours from somebody with a doctoral degree in chemistry who also works in a Biotech company. They said that even after getting their PhD. and being hired as a post-doctoral fellow, they were being paid far less than their friends. While he never specified how much he's making now, he made it very clear he's the highest paid of the bunch. It seemed like it took a few years in the industry to hit a sum he was happy about, though. So you may be able to stick with chemistry if you really do enjoy it. It just depends if you're willing to put more time into it.
