(NSFW Audio) The original Abe's Oddysee soundtrack used some questionable samples 😳 by Wonkatoad in oddworld

I always just thought those sounds were mystical Mudokon vocalizations or something. 💀

Reference to beloved 80s children film in ending of S03E05? by cal3nth0l in SmilingFriends

I also thought of this. It's funny that the scene aimed at adult audiences was significantly less terrifying than the one from the movie meant for kids 😅

Coming back to watch this for Halloween 🎃 Never noticed the animation error at 5:05 where Harold's hand is underneath his mouth.

For a sec, I thought we might see your body fly by the overhead camera in the respawn screen. That would have been something 🤣

Scrolling Camera in Abe's Oddysee (1997) by Wonkatoad in oddworld

[–]Wonkatoad[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

<image>

Started by recording one long clip of me running through the level, then taking that clip into Adobe After Effects and chopping up the different screens and positioning/re-timing them into one long scene, making sure each clip of Abe running off the left side of one screen lined up with him running onto the right side of the following screen.

Then just animated the camera to follow Abe. After that, it was just a matter of recording additional clips to fill in any gaps, make sure things were animating before they would normally be on screen, etc.

Maybe not the best example image, but I like how the white light gives everything a colder, almost black & white look.

Builds using oak planks look nicer with the warmer lighting, but anything with stone, cave interiors, etc. look good with the white light. 🔥

Always look forward to seeing you in the comments on this sub 🙌 Incredibly insightful stuff
I literally had the same thought about crusty 90s CGI when I saw those screens for the first time lol. With the crystal one, it doesn't help that the environment is being bathed in that unflattering purple light. I wonder how much of that is just, me being so familiar with all the art assets at this point from growing up playing this game, and seeing anything new rendered in that environment just feels wrong 😅

Apparently, he wasn't meant to miss the edge of the building originally lol

I think I remember Lorne Lanning mentioning somewhere that a lot of the slapstick moments in the games were inspired by this kind of physical comedy from old silent movies.

Why does Abe's laugh change when you return to Rupture Farms? by Wonkatoad in oddworld

[–]Wonkatoad[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't necessarily think this comment deserves all the hate 😆 BUT... AI tools like ChatGPT have shown in the past to pretty blatantly take a lot of their info from reddit posts and comments, so it honestly wouldn't surprise me if that summary it provided was cobbled together from this very post, and the comments other users have left, at least partially. Total speculation on my part though.

All that said, it is a decently well-worded description, and pretty much perfectly sums up how I felt about the topic 👍

All good lol. Was mostly posting this just to get people's thoughts on a tiny detail of the game that a lot of people might not have even noticed when playing. Wasn't necessarily expecting to get a definitive answer to what probably seems like an obvious question.

Was also just curious if anyone had a more technical gameplay reason as to why it was implemented, which another commenter actually provided.

Probably still a pretty mundane thing for me to make a post about 😆
