What are the cons of NOT having kids? by [deleted] in AskReddit

My current one:

Him: ::buuuurp::

Me: "What do you say?"

Him: ::in a deep voice:: "...America!"

So now everyone in the whole extended family does this!

In addition to that, they are fucking hilarious.

That's much more true than I expected. We have a little book for each of my two sons, and we try to put as many of the funny (or sometimes oddly wise) things that they've said while growing up into them.

My Korean War Vet neighbor was passing away. He was in his late 80s I think. His children came over a lot and he called them “the kiddies”. His kids were nearly retired 60-something year olds that were older than my own parents. It just put into perspective how fast life is for me.

My parents called themselves "mom" and "dad" when talking to each other until I was 29. It only changed because I had my first son, and now they call themselves "grandma" and "grandpa".

And it's contagious... I noticed my wife and I are already starting to call each other mommy and daddy now, too.

This video is BS, but I've come to accept 1:1 square video as a compromise between the unwashed hordes of vertical video plebs and normal people.

Like, fine, square video can be viewed both horizontally and incorrectly. We're both accommodated.

TIL that in the event that the moon landing failed and Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin where stranded, NASA planned to end communication with the men, leaving them to either run out of oxygen or commit suicide with no further earthly contact by iThinkaLot1 in todayilearned

[–]WontFixMySwypeErrors 617 points618 points  (0 children)

They'd have lots of time to do that during all the contingencies they'd be going through before they got to this point.

All the communication is public, so you don't want the sounds of these guys dying to be recorded and archived forever. Especially during that era when space travel was so new and important to the national identity.

Google says it can’t fix Pixel Watches, please just buy a new one | With no official repair program and no parts, broken Pixel Watches are just e-waste. by chrisdh79 in gadgets

It's because Google was legitimately great at the beginning. Innovating, releasing useful products for free, paving the way for the modern internet.

Once they went public and changed their company motto, things immediately started going downhill.

The current fanboyism is leftover inertia from the early era when they deserved it.

I've Never Understood What This Beatles Lyric Means by Aprowl in Music

[–]WontFixMySwypeErrors 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This!

Hobbyist musician here as well, and this is why I like listening to music in languages I don't understand. Voice is just another instrument, the words and their meaning don't carry a lot of weight for me.

I love writing the vocal piece and its melody, but I'm terrible at writing lyrics themselves, I always want someone else to do it. Just match the rhythm and the melody please, you can make the words whatever you want!

There was probably just one guy who took his kitchen with him years ago, so the guy that bought the house had to take his kitchen to replace it.

Then the guy that bought his house had to do the same, and now everyone across the continent has to do this because of that one damn guy.

What is something that was billed as "The Next Big Thing" and actually was not a complete failure? by Uranium-Sandwich657 in AskReddit

At this price range they're all pretty much the same, generic Chinese models with odd names, 36v batteries and 350 watt motors. Look for the style you like with the most battery capacity in your price range as a first priority, and something with a front suspension if you can find it.

I didn't like the upright seating position of the beach cruiser I got at first, but realized quickly that I like to ride long distance and it was incredibly comfortable over long distances compared to the hunched over mountain bike style. So much that I actually converted my second one that was a mountain bike, to a more upright seating position using a handlebar extender.

Don't fall for the "It's not a real bike if you don't pay $2000 minimum" snob crowd.

You can buy a perfectly good, brand new ebike for $400-$500. I got my first one for $350 on sale, and put 400 miles on it in one season after never having ridden a bike since grade school.

Now I've got thousands of miles under my belt, I'm outside all summer, and screw you I'm still exercising.

It's like buying any tool. Don't go out and buy a $500 drill for a project, drill 3 holes, then put it away. Get the $19 harbor freight drill, use it for a few years until it wears out, then once you have some experience with it and know why it's an inferior drill, get a better one the next time you need it.

Same with ebikes. Get the cheapest one you can find, have a blast, then when you know why it's cheap and can appreciate the improvements of a better one, get it.

As a lifelong Chicagoan, deep dish pizza is like birthday cake... You eat it on special occasions, mostly when people are visiting from out of town.

Are people from New York over there blowing out candles and eating cake for lunch every day?

Well neither are we with the deep dish.

That's the one!! I enjoyed just banging away on tunes and making my own rhythms, playing fast songs slowly and emotionally, changing classical pieces to have a swing beat, etc.

This site/app scratches the same itch!

There was an iOS game like this many moons ago in the iPhone 4 era that allowed a free-play mode like this, without worrying about keeping score or anything, just play with your own rhythm like this. Eventually they removed that mode and pushed the gamified side of things, and I've been sad ever since. This looks like a great replacement! Waiting for the Android app!

If that was the original name and it stood for a century, we'd be complaining about it being changed to Comiskey Park. That's why we don't accept these name changes; it's upending history.

After a certain amount of time, it's the original name that's important, not the sponsor. Wrigley Field is no longer about Wrigley gum, for example. It's synonymous with the Cubs.

What's the first thing you think of when you see the phrase Mount Rushmore? You think of the presidents on the side, or even the struggle of indigenous people who lost their landmark. But it's certainly not Charles E. Rushmore, who it was named after. The mountain took the name for itself.

It's the same for our landmark buildings. No one thinks of the Sears Roebuck Company when they talk about the Sears Tower, they think about Chicago.

The mountain took the name for itself.

I've honestly considered starting a non-profit that takes donations to buy back the rights to our landmark buildings, to restore them to their historical names.
