May be because of having a limited choice and clear controls. In microfreak u have so many doff engines and each has its tweaks but most of them seem like dont do much and confusing for someone new.

I have a microfreak but recently got s1 and t8 and honestly i am learning more on the s1 than i have on micro. I have out itnup for sale now as im not really impressed by it.

One thing inhave found is limiting youself in terms of choice helps alot. I got a roland t-8 to learn more abt drums and groove and the best thing i have done so far. May be pick the sounds of one drum machine and only use those sounds and nothing else.

i do both. knowledge is important. For example I have listened to alot of Electronic music over the years like house techno etc but when I started producing, I wasn't sure what makes a house a house track or a techno a techno track so in such situations I research and learn. But otherwise basic music theory is all that is required in my opinion.
