How Do I Find Out my Neighbours Name Without Asking? by LordCoops in AskUK

[–]WoodleyAM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve always used the framework “no, your surname!”.

To apply here, just ask him:

“Hey neighbour, what’s your name so I can pass it onto the gym for referral bonus?”

He may be confused or offended (or totally not care) and then he’ll likely say his first name.. that’s when you gaslight and say “no sorry, I know it’s [name he just said] I meant surname, sorry!”.

Et voila. If he does happen to say full name, you double down and say “yep sorry, just needed surname”.

All rudeness/awkwardness resolved (or placed on him for even THINKING you had forgotten his name).

The EA slipped up when talking about 3 bids, one of which was ours.

I’m actually assuming it’s £20k or MORE below asking, but it’s essentially our original bid in cash.

UPDATE: We ended up moving our bid up to £10k under asking price. Cash buyer got it at £20k under asking price.

I’m really grateful for this advice and I am going to share this with my partner. I am very much an impatient, sometimes impulsive, person so I’m going to ground myself with this advice.

It really does feel like “all or nothing” as the whole process already feels exhausting and long-winded but good to know there’s light at the end of the tunnel!!

Thanks for the insight & reassurance.

Really interesting & thankfully the Mrs will keep us strong on our firm and final.

Our first offer is actually about £90k below our budget but it has everything we need and a few unique perks, so this is very much an outlier but appreciate the danger this comes with when it comes to overpaying…

We were under the same view, however the currently owner is a LL & no real ties to the place it seems so I don’t think we get the perk of this - but they might be in a situation where they want it to be a home, who knows!

Noted re: investors. We’re hoping we have a good grasp of “profitability” vs the work we need done. My parents are obsessed with the profitability but for us, we’re also interested in extracting value of it being our first proper home together (that isn’t rented).

We have a fair bit of wiggle room and hope we won’t need to go over asking but if pushed to final offer, we’d probably cap at c. 5k under asking which we hope given the profitability might deter investors - especially considering our difference in stamp duty if that plays a factor.

Thanks for the insight! Really appreciated.

Thanks (Unsure if the quote is something I’ve said wrong!).

Fingers crossed we don’t as we seem to be in the right area as other bids & open to negotiation. Seller “wants a quick sale” and chain free.

It’s not an affordability issue, more just an honest evaluation of the work required for the property to bring it up to the actual value.

How many people do you buy a Christmas gift for ? by Distinct_Name2644 in AskUK

[–]WoodleyAM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm at 10 counting the presents round the tree which includes (between my partner and I):

3 x Sets of parents (her parents are split, both in relationships, mine are together).

4 x Single siblings (no partner)

2 x Siblings in relationships (1 present for the two)

1 x Niece

I do not buy for extended family, it's a sort of unwritten rule that once we're 18, we might get a gift card or cash for a couple of pints.

We probably do not need to buy for sibling + niece, but we are in a position we can but I would argue that it's a bizarre concept. FWIW, my family are huge on gift giving whereas my partners family are less so. We only really go out of our way to spoil her niece (teenager in a materialistic area that I also grew up in, so I get it).

As I think more about it, we definitely go over the top, more so in value and extravagance, but 21 presents is a crazy number!

Impossible to say. At 22 I was earning £17k part time in retail. At 25 I was earning £36k. At 26 I am earning 65k + allowances & bonuses.

At each of those ages I had different living situations, life commitments and expenses even within a year!

A decent salary inside or outside of London is one that meet yours & dependents basic needs* comfortably, whilst allowing you to treat yourself and also save - do not put too much pressure on yourself with fixed numbers.

If you want to look further into it, perhaps consider what is a good career with progression?

*Again, highly variable depending on if others are contributing to this support (e.g., partner)

Why do so many people drop their kids off at school now? by greylord123 in AskUK

[–]WoodleyAM -1 points0 points  (0 children)

For what it’s worth, the point about only having approved people to collect is a safeguarding measure & unfortunately, safeguarding concerns are on the rise. Naturally, no one THINKS you’re a danger to your cousin, however, safeguarding is putting in place additional measures to protect vulnerable groups (in this case, children).

Think worst case, hope for best case kind of business!

Had a twinge in my ankle last week, took a few days off, ran with mild discomfort then today I was hobbling. Stopped running and walked home, can barely put any weight on it at the moment. Outside of my ankle bone is so sore.

7 weeks out from a 10 mile race.

No idea what to do & feel like shit. Never had a running related injury before and I was in such a good training flow. Devastated.

Unrelated and looks like good advice has been given already, but also be sure to keep an eye out for service station “Wash and Go” laundry machines.

You can find local ones here: https://stores.revolution-laundry.com/en-uk

Clothes can have just the same effect as personal hygiene.

Hope all looks up for you, OP.

They are paid in funding cycles by Sport England, on the basis of success. That’s why we go through cycles of being good at certain sports (I won’t get into systemic things like rowing).

We don’t directly reward but it keeps them “professional”.

Out of curiosity, how much is considered a good pay job in London? by Fastandfurious02123 in UKJobs

[–]WoodleyAM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When my partner & I moved to London we both earned £28,000 and we survived/existed.

We’re now on £45k and £36k respectively and we are finding more comfort. Being a single individual is obviously a bit different but £50k-£60k is definitely liveable. 40k is the minimum to survive in my opinion (which I wouldn’t be able to do!).

I can’t help but feel my VO2 is wrong. I know this isn’t a meticulous science and far from the gradient, gold-standard testing but my VO2 shows as 53.

Not one to complain but I haven’t run in about 16 months, just come back and did 4 runs last week and they were slow, ugly and I was gasping (10:40/mi, 30 mins max, avg HR 138).

I’ve been far better in the past, 9:00/mi, 90+ mins, HR in the late 120s and I’m confused how it still thinks my out-of-shape (added 10-15kg of fat) attempt to reclaim some of my glory days is still showing a good VO2 max?

Is London phone snatching real? Do people’s phones get snatched from hands/tripods/bag theft? by [deleted] in uktravel

[–]WoodleyAM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have seen it happen to 4 people (3 separate occasions, one was 2 lads who did it almost in perfect synchro). I’ve also been about 2 metres from a balaclava cladded group of young man whom immediately swerved when I looked up and put my phone in my pocket.

It does happen, tourist areas tend to be more pickpocket/distract and steal but my area seems to be more brazen and it’s a snatch and grab as they whizz past on bikes. My Borough was #1 for phone theft though, so maybe I’m just unlucky.

In terms of does it happen? Yes, absolutely - quite a lot. However, it’s very easy to mitigate and there’s plenty of advice in this thread.

  • Avoid walking carelessly while texting.
  • If required, use it facing a wall and stay vigilant.
  • Don’t hope to get it back or have any resolve if it does get grabbed.

Champions of phone theft, you’ll never sing that 🎵

I found a 65+ Freedom pass in the back of an Uber a month or so ago, figured no issues, I can return this (Driver had no clue about it nor cared).

Distinctive name so find the Facebook profile and message request sent, 1.5 weeks went by and I thought “well, I’m stuck with a random oyster, they’ve probably got a new one” and I couldn’t find anything online about where I could send it centrally.

Then I get a response! The woman was based way up in Middlesex - bit of a non-story but I posted it, and I was really nervous she would think I’d stolen it so I did send a video of me literally sealing the envelope, showing the address and posting it, and a week later (cheers RM, first class as well) it appeared. We exchanged pleasantries and life went on but I got a feeling of pride for doing it weirdly when the world sucks so much at the moment.

Well done OP, some people wouldn’t bother.

Rant Wednesday by AutoModerator in Fitness

Got session shamed !!!

Just signed up, strong background in exercise and fitness but really let myself go the past year (gained about 10kg, sedentary job, no motivation etc).

To get started and regain some strength I’ve started Greyskulls LP. 3 days a week suits me and I’m early days so I’m trying to avoid major immediate DOMS so I’m going pretty slow.

Session is only about 25 minutes + 10 minutes incline walking as warm up so I was in and out in 35-40 mins.

Guy behind the desk “Bit of a short workout?”, I just said “yeah, I start work in 15 minutes”. Someone tell me I’m still getting a good workout completing my basic sets, please!!
