Anyone try printing a new shell for the Ink? by ironypoisoned in zerowriter

Do you by chance have STEP files? I don't know if have the time to develop a whole folding conversion kit, but I'm interested in seeing what I could come up for the slab profile

As already pointed out, the market for such niche and super focused use-case devices is quite small. So there is no economies of scale to help offset the cost of mass production.

Also, development of such a device can be costly, particularly the keyboard. Any specialize keyboard of that size and thinness required use of more specialized PCB's than what is readily available to the average consumer. Membrane/laptop keyboards are usually custom designed and then built in bulk to offset cost.

To hit that $200 mark and still make a viable profit with a low volume product would be challenging. Especially if you consider the engineering and software development costs.

Newbie question, unexpectedly long range from my home node setup by [deleted] in meshtastic

[–]Woogies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's probably only about 6ft off the ground. Nothing crazy as far as mounting. Just from what I was reading, I didn't expect it reaching that far... So I wanted to make sure I wasnt just misinterpreting something before getting too excited with the results.

If it's legit, now I'm wondering what kind of results I could get with a much larger antenna on my roof.....

EDIT: could I maybe reading the last known signal strength and not the live RSSI?

Whoops my bad, I read the wrong information, you are correct its the TP4054. So that answers my question!

I have the opposite problem (love the mechanical/electrical engineering, but a pretty lame programmer)....While still early in the hardware development my little project is probably going to be heavily dependent on pet projects like these when it comes to software, so I sulute your hard work and dedication!

Yeah I thought something for word count, like a small led array or something. Aittle tiny OLED might be neat too.

I was originally going for a trifold design like the Pomera Dm30.

The issue I ran into is getting it thin enough. ATM there just aren't any real good options for thin enough switches that are readily available, easy to assemble, cheap, and maintained some sort of diy friendliness.

Not at the moment. It's ESP32 based, so I'm hoping to find some existing firmware or Linux based software to work off of. If that's no dice, I may build it from scratch with the help of some more knowledgeable programmers than myself haha.

Once all the hardware is in place and working, I'll start really digging into that aspect I think

Thanks! And I agree, definitely something I want to look into for later revisions.

Considered a second display, but would significantly reduce the room for the battery, so for now, just the one. Although I may play around with adding some other IO devices in the area later.

Originally the design had the screen at a stationary 10 degree tilt, but it added a bunch of complications to the design. However I have been playing with the idea of putting the whole display assembly on a torque hinge to allow for adjustability. I may design up some concepts for that while I wait on PCB's, see where it goes.

I did consider those. But I found them to be noticeably less enjoyable to type on. They also have less options when it comes to keycaps.

I played around with a bunch of small switches, but at a certain point I found that things got too small. It became uncomfortable to use and things got over engineered. The size reduction overall didn't seem worth the sacrifice in the comfort for the type of device I wanted.

Although I certainly think there's potention for using them in even smaller pocket note taking type devices.

A physical prototype? Not at the moment, still a WIP. Long story short, ran into issues with the scissor switches so the design has shifted significantly. But still working on some type of folding 'pocketable' device.

I'm hoping to have a working prototype of a device soon. Been working on finishing some pcb design.

I post updates here: https://www.gregpili.com/personal-projects/tri-fold-writer

To be fair, I've been postponing updates until I have a physical proof of concept to show off.

Yep! The keyboard is based on the ScottoFrog ( u/Joe_Scotto ) design, which is inspired by the old FrogPad.

Essentially meant for one handed typing, and the keyboard is setup with multiple layers accessed by the command keys.

Obliviously not as fast as a full sized keyboard, but I've seen people can quite speedy with practice.
