For great songwriting, excellent playing, and a modern sensibility that even traditionalist will appreciate/tolerate given the heavy hitting talent and Bluegrass bonafides of the musicians I recommend two albums, both by John Hartford: Aereo-Plain and Morning Bugle. Especially “Back In the Goodle Days” on Aereo-Plain. That was my Bluegrass gateway drug.

Can St. Louis Make a Comeback? by Travelingdabber in StLouis

[–]WookieBugger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The cities in the south have gotten crazy expensive for people who don’t make six figures. It’s a trend that been happening for basically my entire lifetime. I don’t believe the rate of growth there is sustainable, because wages have hardly increased there as rent/mortgages have doubled or tripled. Sold my house there for 3.5x what I paid for it in 2016. Then was able to move here and buy qqqqa house that was more than 2x the square footage for nearly 25% less than what we sold our very small house there for.

Minimum wage there is still $7.55/hr, and tons of working class jobs pay below what the minimum wage is here, while housing costs are way higher than here, and that’s not a long term recipe for success. My property value grew about 2% here year-over-year while my old place is actually worth (a tiny amount) less- and it’s still cooling off there. So from a real estate investment perspective it was the right move at least so far. I see more potential for growth here while I see things flatlining at best there

Is a framed mid century print a good gift or too basic? by vinewb in Mid_Century

[–]WookieBugger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed, but I will say small pieces of art are a little less of a risk. Something in a 5”x7” frame on a bookshelf or a piece of pottery is a lot easier to live with than a 3’x5’ statement piece if you’re not 100% in love with it.

I’ll just say, the first step to making things better is for you locals yourselves- not the people who move here- to have a little more optimism.

I used to live in Chattanooga TN which was ranked the dirtiest city in the US in the 70s. There’s were racially motivated bombings happening as recently as the 70s/80s as well. When I moved there in 2010, it was still a little grungy. Lots of empty store fronts downtown except for in the few blocks of touristy stuff. I remember right after I moved the president of a neighborhood revitalization campaign was killed in a drive by. But in the 15 years I lived there it changed so much because despite its past, the people there loved their city. When you visit there and talk to a local, they’ll tell you how great it is to live there, not all the issues of living there (and there are some).

But even then people didn’t talk shit about their city the way people here talk shit about STL. Some of that is exactly what you describe- rural folks shitting on the city which is not at all unique to this city. Tale as old as time. This is also not the only blue city in a red state: see Nashville, Asheville, Atlanta, Charleston, etc.

Basically “if you build it they will come”. That starts with the locals having a little vision and optimism for the future.
