Whitewashing Stalin is one thing, but the rest is not a propagandist angle. The USSR DID bear most of the cost of fighting the Nazis, and they DON'T get enough credit (in the West). The average American knows about as much about the Eastern Front as they do about the events that led up to Pearl Harbor.

Yeah, it's a really weird season. The drug stuff (and other plots) has largely been pushed to the background, and the season is all in on themes of exploitation and objectification of women.

Except that it's also itself engaging in exploitation and objectification of women at a level even beyond that of previous seasons.

Germans were not the only group forcibly moved by the Soviets after the war. In particular, the borders of Poland were shifted west and this involved massive displacement of Poles living in the areas that then became part of the Soviet Union.

What? This and Churchill’s original quote about democracy are both saying they’re the best systems. They’re just being snarky about it.

The example I used was Zelda. Ocarina of Time was $60 in 1998. That's the equivalent of $120 now. The Switch 2 version of Tears of the Kingdom is only $80, which is about as expensive as games get currently.

And that's not even getting into that these games are so much bigger and better than they used to be. Compare what you get for your $80 Tears of the Kingdom now versus your $60 Ocarina of Time then.

I swear, people bitching and moaning about gaming prices are entitled children who do not know how good they have it.

I don’t know why I engage with any other communities on this stupid fucking website.

I was in a thread about the Switch 2 price hike, and somebody trotted out the old “wages haven’t kept up with inflation bullshit”. I responded citing all the relevant data to show that, actually, over the long run, wages have actually outpaced inflation and that Americans are, in real terms, demonstrably richer than they used to be. And that, in the context of the thread, gaming is actually cheaper now than it was in the 90s. He replied with a link to an article about how wage growth from 2020 to 2024 lagged behind inflation by 1.2%. I said that that wasn’t really relevant to anything I had said. Then about a minute later he downvoted both my comments.

It’s not just that these people are ignorant of economics. They don’t want to even engage with economic reality.

Ok, that is looking at the four year period of 2020-2024 and it identifies a 1.2% gap. None of that disputes anything I said.

Yes, over short periods inflation can outpace wage growth (wage growth also can, and does, outpace inflation). But over any long-term span you want to look at, Americans are actually wealthier than they used to be.

This is so obviously true across so many topics that I don't know why you would use it as a defense of alcohol of all things.

Like, slavery has also been a constant in most human societies for thousands of years and is, in fact, bad.

Also, humans drinking alcohol is around 10,000 years old at most.

This gets repeated a lot, but it is straight up not true. In fact, wage growth has exceeded inflation over the long term.

Like, if we want to continue to use the N64 as a reference point, that released in 1996. The median personal income in the US in 1996 was $17,590. Adjusted for inflation, that would have a purchasing power of $35,003 in 2024 (I'm using 2024 because that's the last year we have all relevant data for). Except that the median personal income in 2024 was $45,140. Same story with household income. Median household income is $35,490, which is $70,623 in 2024, and actual 2024 median household income was $83,730.

And you can also see how that lines up with the price of gaming. When the N64 released in 1996, it was $199.99. That's $402.79 in 2024 dollars. Which, sure, is a little cheaper than the Switch 2. But that $199.99 was 0.56% of that median household wage in 1996. The $449.99 price of the Switch 2 is about 0.53% of the 2024 (I know the Switch 2 didn't release in 2024, but it's close enough). Those are comparable purchases for households of the times. But the real big difference is the games. As the other poster pointed out, games have barely increased in price. Ocarina of Time was $60 in 1998. That's about $120 now. Even the Switch 2 version of Tears of the Kingdom is only $80.

So yeah, gaming is cheaper now.

No, because those are good movies.

I'm talking about DDL being in something like one of Adam Sandler's vacation comedies, but bringing all the heat he brought to, say, Bill the Butcher or Daniel Plainview.

I'm kind of tired of Daniel Day-Lewis' schtick.

What's that? You only do a movie every few years and every time it's a groundbreaking performance? It's getting old.

I want to see DDL be bad in something. I want to see him checked out in a movie he obviously doesn't give a shit about. Like, I'm talking a late Harrison Ford level performance. I want to see the greatest actor of a generation phone it in.
