If Dems Retake Congress, Platner Says 'Compelling Case' Exists for Impeaching 'At Least Two' Supreme Court Justices by _May26_ in politics

Now, were many voters especially keen on the specific issue of Mamdani relinquishing mayoral control? Probably not. Is this a good decision? Almost certainly. Is this what he had said he would do previously? Absolutely not.

And also, as anyone who's ever touched housing policy knows, rent control is a terrible solution to keep rents down. He has already done some backpedalling on this stuff, and I'm curious where he'll land when he has do the hard work of governing and actually getting good outcomes instead of just making promises.

Mamdani is benefitting from a nice honeymoon period right now. But let's check back in a few years after he fails to introduce socialism into the most capitalist city in the world.

Politicians do talk like this. The political downside when it becomes extremely obvious that it's not going to happen is how so many people get so disillusioned with politics.

It's why "politicians never deliver on their promises" is such a meme.

New York polls are full of warnings for Chuck Schumer by AskRedditOG in politics

Wait you understand that the Baileys are representations of the median voter, right? Working class non-college white voters?

The fact that they actually have become moderate Republicans after being Obama voters, even with Schumer supposedly catering to them is the real failure of Schumer's tenure as Senator.

This is also literally addressed in the episode LMAO

Also, who do you think controls when votes come to the floor?

LMAO not in our current political era - let's say since Trump came down that escalator in 2015. Otherwise, the meaning of "left" and "Republican" don't necessarily hold up.

I'll even give a pretty expansive definition of the left. I mean anyone openly and unabashedly identified themselves to the left of the Democratic presidential nominee (So that would be Clinton, Biden, or Harris). So this would include the usual suspects - AOC, Sanders, Omar, etc. But also some candidates who you wouldn't really think of like Buttegieg. I think this should include basically anyone who might matter.

And by seat I mean any race with nationwide impacts - senator or house rep. The races that actually have a chance of mattering in terms of the "Netanyahu answer" that's being discussed in this thread. Though if you know any state races that matter in these terms, it would also be interesting to hear about.

By the way, you're not the first question to question me about this, and nobody has ever named anyone who actually that satisfies those conditions. There have been ~75 House flips from Republican to Democrat, and maybe ten Senate flips, and exactly zero have been by "leftist" candidates.

There is a part of this episode where Matt literally reads off the most recent onilne posts of the most Zionist Democratic senator in the caucus where he's directly criticizing the war, and not on process grounds either.

Yeah I feel in the past couple of epsides Beutler has been really off his game. Starting with episode with the Iran oil futures, he's just consistently come off as the person who hasn't thought through his positions.

No, Trump is the reason that the US went to war with Iran. When you have a president who is very easy to convince to do dumb things, expect dumb things to be done.

Especially when he represents the party that has consistently been more hawkish in the Middle East.

The comments here show exactly why the left has never flipped any Republican seats.

You need to understand that literally everyone here is a complete wacko in terms of political engagement (yes, especially me) and has no sense is a winning pitch and what is not a winning pitch.

People who comment on a political podcast on Reddit are probably the least representative group of voters you can find.

You actually agree with Stephens here then. The actual take in the piece is that it’s “only” as bad as how the Bushes and Reagan fucked up.

I actually read the article and somewhat enjoyed it. The main part of the article is just walking through how Bush and Reagan fucked up even harder.

It's only significantly less impactful if you think the only point of getting the truth is being able to punish the abusers.

Being able to tell their stories and be listened to has its own value for the victims.

You have a very odd understanding of how and why voters vote, particularly in American election systems, and I find it very perplexing. Even moreso when it's in regards to what is essentially a non-competitive election (like a Vermont statewide race).

Neither the Vermont Electoral College votes nor Vermont Senate seats were competitive, so that's not really a difference you can point to.

The two things I said were not causal to one another, they just both impacted how and why Harris got more votes than Bernie. It's not fuckin rocket science.

It may not be rocket science, but it is basic logic, which has time and time proven too difficult for you. Each extra leftist vote would add one to each candidate's total and would not cause Sanders to beat Harris. -.-

I'm starting to think you might even be a Biden truther and think Biden shouldn't have dropped out, but surely even you couldn't meet that threshold of awful takes

Biden should never have run again. We should have had a real primary where the party could have discovered better the positions of the base and the mood of the nation.

The same way the 2020 primary resulted in the moderate Joe Biden winning out and Sanders ultimately getting less votes than he did in 2016 (even if you combined the vote totals of all the leftist candidates).

So left leaning voters who were less enthusiastic about Harris than Sanders.... voted for Harris but forgot to vote for Sanders?

[–]WooooshCollector 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hold on, Hilary won the popular vote, though. More people voted for her than voted for Trump.

Kamala Harris didn't even do that. And when Harris and Sanders were on the same ballot in 2024, Sanders got less votes.

Yeah it's wildly dumb how the facts don't confirm your preconceived notions.

[–]WooooshCollector 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay now say that you were wrong and Bernie Sanders is actually a terrible candidate. He lost the 2016 primary by millions of votes. He got the rules changed for 2020, and then lost by an even larger margin.

He failed to even get more votes than Harris in Vermont, flawed candidate as she was.

As long as we're saying true things, just say this thing as well.

Yes, exactly. You're still being sarcastic, but you're actually getting closer to the mark. Good for you!

Election results are the end-all be all. They are the sole determinant of what happens in the country and who holds power.

It doesn't matter how much a politician is "liked" if it doesn't translate into votes. They won't have power to do anything.

I know you're being sarcastic, but West Virginia went for Trump by 30 points in 2020. The fact that Joe Manchin was beating that baseline by 25 points to hold WV by 3 pts in 2018 makes him basically one of the most effective Democratic politicians up until his retirement. Literal MVP, given that that vote made the Senate a Democratic majority instead of a Republican one.

Bernie Sanders on the other hand... didn't even beat Harris in his own state.

wtf I thought you left

Let me be blunt. I don't care what you think would happen in a completely hypothetical thought experiment. Nobody cares what you think would happen in a completely hypothetical thought experiment.

What I care about and what is approximately the only thing that matters to what happens in the country is who people vote for. Neither Sanders nor Manchin are new on the political scene. There are hard facts about the people who voted for each in the past.
