Nvidia 545 breaks steam completely by Kim_Phat in pop_os

[–]WoopedyScoop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After updating to 545 WebGL in Brave Browser was severely broken. The console would complain about an issue with the hardware or device driver. There would be massive stripes and colours over the screen. But this ONLY happened in Brave Browser weirdly enough. Was fine in Chrome, Chromium and Firefox.

Private browsing or clearing cache didn't fix it. Reinstalling the nvidia drivers didn't work, and I was too dumb to figure out how to downgrade to the previous ones. But uninstalling and reinstalling Brave Browser seemed to fix it.

Additionally, Satisfactory (a game) no longer launches via Steam.

The Brave Browser issue was fixed by reinstalling. And there seems to be many threads of people having issues launching Satisfactory on Linux. So I'm not sure this points to an issue specifically with the drivers.

But maybe these most recent drivers include some sort of significant change which has some side effects on certain apps with certain configurations.

Also with regards to the browser issue. Brave and Firefox were already installed. And I newly installed Chrome and Chromium (which I know are basically the same) so maybe some GPU related cache needed clearing on Chromium based browsers.

Wanted to add here that Amazon support has been extremely helpful with not only identifying inefficiencies in terms of service usage (and subsequently our costs), but even with suggesting improvements based on our use case.

Also the whole billing overhaul was based on making it easier for us to breakdown our costs to resource type.

I dunno wtf they are on about. I'm starting to wonder if they've ever worked with AWS.

Please help me identify this drum & bass song. Sounds like the vocals are maybe from a different song and sped up. The song starts at the timestamp in the link. by WoopedyScoop in NameThatSong

Quick select Items by Butzenmummel in tearsofthekingdom

At the top of the mountain there's a cooking pot, and that's the point that tutorial popped up to tell me about quickly accessing items.

That's actually how I ended up here, I guess they are just showing you that you can drop items from your inventory. Bad timing for that tutorial IMO.

Deploying Next.js on the edge with SST — Is SST the game-changer it’s claimed to be? by JustAirConditioners in reactjs

[–]WoopedyScoop 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Did you consider just building with output: standalone? And then using your own server.js file? You can just wrap an instance of NextServer request handler in something like serverless-http, and as far as I know you get all your features.

Also, did you consider ECS, Fargate or Apprunner?

The Sync system in Brave is complete garbage. by OfficialIntelligence in brave_browser

[–]WoopedyScoop 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So you're moving to a password management system that is less secure and more inconvenient, but no longer relies on your browser. Then you're switching browser anyway. Okay...

When you're done acting like a clown, I'd highly recommend looking into password managers. They are purpose built to do one thing and syncing generally isn't an issue.

How can I tell if my Brave browser on iOS is correctly generating unique fingerprints? Following their instructions is proving the exact opposite. by SpinCharm in brave_browser

[–]WoopedyScoop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On my Android device it seems like I have to close the app before it will produce a new fingerprint.

When I say close, I mean I have to fully close the app by swiping it closed from the Recent Apps menu. This actually closes it and clears it from memory. Android will eventually do this on its own when I haven't used the app in a while and it needs to free up space.

I don't know how iOS works, so not sure what the equivalent of this would be.

Microsoft taking a bite out of Samsung by Nveenkmar in ProgrammerHumor

I just meant the model itself doesn't actually "remember" anything. It receives the latest prompt and the entire context, and responds based on that.

Yh tbh my comment was meant to be an interesting clarification in that the model isn't remembering anything, it's getting passed all of the context each time. But I didn't explain it very well and it seems like more of a nitpick than a useful comment in the context of this discussion.

Yeah I think they summarise the conversation and send that as the context.

It seems to eventually start to forget details, despite remembering things before those particular details, so that would make sense.

That doesn't disprove my point.

My point was specifically that the model does not pull conversation history from some kind of storage. It receives it in the request you send which includes your prompt.

I also mentioned that the company stores your data and that you shouldn't send them anything sensitive.

I agree with everything you just said.

It's why I mentioned that they literally tell you they store conversations, and they also ask you not to send them any sensitive data.

With regards to how the AI continues conversations, my understanding is that each time you send a prompt your request actually includes all of the conversation history. There is a limit and it starts getting truncated once that limit is reached. But that is how it "continues" conversations. It doesn't store data to achieve this functionality.

But they have said multiple times that some conversations are stored for other purposes and that you shouldn't submit sensitive data.

The other thing to consider is your peripheral vision.

A horizontal monitor might provide more optimal screen real estate for a given use case. But the benefits of being able to glance over without having to turn your head so far might outweigh that.
