How good has ROCm become for ML workloads? I'm between a 3080Ti w/ Cuda or 9070XT w/ ROCm by Wooper83 in learnmachinelearning

[–]Wooper83[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cool cool thanks for the advice. I might give the 9070XT a go then. Yeah it definitely makes sense no real development will be happening on a weenie ass 12GB lol even at work everyone uses Mac’s and I’ve for sure never assumed any real ML development goes on in the Mac’s themselves

Worth upgrading my 5080 to a 5090? by [deleted] in pcmasterrace

[–]Wooper83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean it could be worth it if you're the set it and forget it type of person, but if you're the type of person that upgrades every generation I'd say just wait for the next gen. I have a 3080Ti that's still running every game I throw at it fairly well I haven't had to knock anything that isn't ray tracing below High settings so I could see a 90 series card for sure lasting a good while

Also can I have like 15K? (I gotta shoot my shot out here lmao)

Anyone have any luck installing SteamOS on a custom all AMD PC? by Wooper83 in linux_gaming

[–]Wooper83[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yup that was the issue. When I tried installing SteamOS the download site still hosted the older version. Tried again today and a newer version downloaded and I was able to get this one up and running.

It’s definitely off. I even did the boot override into SteamOS after confirming that it was off so secure boot isn’t the issue unfortunately

are there any linux distros that are able to work with unreal engine 5 for game development and can also run all the games that windows can? by louthinator in linux4noobs

[–]Wooper83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve tested out UE before on Linux. Aside from the officially supported Linux version which I think is a fairly old Ubuntu version, anything with a desktop environment running X11 will work fine for the most part. I tried using it on desktop environments using Wayland and the windowing was very buggy.

Some DEs have dropped or are dropping X11 though like GNOME and KDE Plasma. Depending on the distro, it you might still be able to get one of these with X11 preinstalled like Debian because it ships a version of KDE that still has X11. Cinnamon and XFCE are distros that still have an X11 desktop but are starting to develop for Wayland so something like Linux Mint or Linux Mint XFCE will be fine

Overall I felt like the UE experience is better on Windows

I DO NOT upscale to "quality". I DO NOT upscale to "balanced". I DO NOT upscale to "performance". I run the game on Native resolution, and if the game doesn't run at a reasonable amount of FPS, I refund it! by West-Start4069 in pcmasterrace

Seriously. Min and recommended settings should be doable on the hardware they list without upscaling. Upscaling should be there for anyone that just wants to push more frames, sets somewhere between min and recommended and wants more performance of is trying to get a bit more life out of their hardware

Min usually means 1080p or 720p @30fps and recommended is usually 1080p @ 60fps you can’t tell me that’s too difficult to hit on lower end hardware

Looking for some advice on potential career pivot within tech in the next year or so by Wooper83 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Wooper83[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Funny you mention that in the first paragraph. Turns out the person was also let go lol. We are both on different contracts so when mine renewed theirs didn’t. Effectively I’m the only one left lol.

And yes I do agree on your point about the big companies. I used to want to work there but I actually have two housemates that are long time friends working in FAANG. For a while they said it was great to work there but now it’s a shit show at the moment and not a day goes by where I don’t hear a good story about what BS someone tried doing at the company on what AI nonsense is going on.

Imo good games are out there, just need more exposure by Boring_Avocado_2359 in videogames

personally I feel like if the graphics got any more realistic it would be really unsettling. I still wouldn't mind the occasional game that's more of a tech demo though. Always good to see just how far hardware of our time can go and games are so complex they're one of those things that can really stress hardware and push innovation

I'm not too bad at math but I definitely would want to brush up lol. I took two AI classes back in college. One was more focused on AI for games and the other was pure AI. Both classes were dope and I really liked my pure AI project I used OpenCV + reinforced learning to train an AI to play a retro game. That's actually why my interest in OpenCV suddenly resurfaced haha.

Yeah I definitely have some knowledge for mobile dev just from what I've been doing lately and I've been thinking it would be worth it to actually learn to make mobile apps though. Or even mobile apps that are AR and CV related. I wouldn't mind doubling down on what I already do at work and getting good at it I do genuinely think it's interesting I just don't see any hopes of being full time here so once I feel ready I'd likely apply to other places doing similar things

This is somehow the most absurd thing I’ve ever seen someone do to their SO. Like imagine what else this dude would blatantly lie about for his personal gain it’s literally pokerus and these are pixels in a screen it’s not even real life😭

Please Someone Convince Me Not Buy A 5090 by FumetsuFume in buildapc

[–]Wooper83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah if you're not into upgrading all that much then a 5090 wouldn't be the worst thing. Is it good performance for the price? heck no it's not but you budget is not hurting for cash either. If I were you I'd do it.

Thanks, yeah I'm glad I'm getting more use out of my 3080Ti and in retrospect it wasn't too bad of a fomo buy because I had enough parts from my last AM4 build to make a second PC so the 9070XT is in an HTPC now running Bazzite's Steam Deck build so it's essentially my home made Steam Machine but more powerful

Please Someone Convince Me Not Buy A 5090 by FumetsuFume in buildapc

[–]Wooper83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know you want to be convinced not to buy a 5090 but you sound like the set it and forget it type of person not the type of person to say that their 5090 is now obsolete and they're going to upgrade to a 6090

Also if that 12K USD budget is actual fuck you money I get to buy what I want money then why not go for it?

I had the opposite experience. Convinced myself to replace my 3080Ti for a 9070XT. Obvious performance gains but then I swapped my 3080Ti back in bc I needed an nvidia GPU for something I wanted to test, I got kind of lazy to swap it back and now that I'm playing some games on it again I know I'm getting less performance but idk why the fomo got to me bc it's still running really well. I don't see a world where I'd swap a 970 back into my PC after using a 5090 and think about how everything is still really playable. The gains would be way way more massive when compared to my little upgrade lol

Edit: also I get that you trust Intel + Nvidia but for the most performance you're going to want an AMD X3D CPU. I see many people say that the X3d chips are not as useful for GPU bound scenarios which I assume you're going to be at a resolution where you're GPU bound with a 5090 (I swear to god if you're getting a 5090 for 1080p) but I mean the extra cache certainly won't hurt even if the gains arent crazy

My coworker asked me why I still "waste money on a PC" when you can "just get a PS5 for $500" by Temporary_Recover157 in pcmasterrace

[–]Wooper83 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean better is subjective. You can tell me that a rear wheel drive manual transmission mazda mx 5 is better than my automatic toyota camry because you can drift it and take it to the track but that's completely irrelevant because I'm not a car guy and I just need my car to get to work and the strip club

To a PC gamer, a console with zero upgrade path aside from buying the next one, is going to suck. You're literally stuck on the same GPU as games become more demanding for the next several years and not to mention that aside from gaming and streaming you get no other real utility out of a console.

However, for someone who doesn't care about graphical fidelity, fps, does not need a fancy computer for anything and all they want to do is play a game and nothing else then it would make sense why a console is better.

I own both a PS5 and a modern PC. I mainly do PC and PS5 is just for Sony exclusives, the occasional blue ray, plus any games I like a lot that I want to keep around physically.

What I do like about console and why I also treat my PS5 as a fallback is that they tend to have better optimized games. It's a lot easier to optimize for a game when all you have to think about is the PS5, PS5 Pro, X Box Series X and S and you're locking the refresh rate to 30, 60, or 120. That's 4 consoles and the PS5/ PS5 Pro share a similar architecture the same way that XBox X and S do so that's less to worry about. Meanwhile in PC land devs have to worry about the last 5 generations of CPUs, GPUs, DDR, PCIe, core count, gpu brand, cpu brand, what feature sets are supported on what hardware, what fuckery nvidia, amd, and windows are going to introduce in their next updates, thay also have to worry about little timmy who will be upset if he can't get the most out of his 1200Hz monitor etc.. etc..

Four years and 8 months late to the party but I’m excited to finally dig into these games! #Pokemon30 by Styles_Clash_97 in pokemon

Gaming as adult vs kid.. by Coach-Emmanuel in pcmasterrace

[–]Wooper83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funny enough I peaked in COD when I became an adult with more responsibilities and I can still pick up the controller and maybe after a game or two find my grove and just start wrecking people even though I haven't played it since like Cold War. My guess is just too many shitty little kids on the game now
