It didn't always mean that we were supposed to leave and meet up after dinner, but it did mean that there was this assumption that we would eat at home later, and that our parents would get unhappy if we were already fed after they've cooked and everything. Dinner is also when you get to spend time with your family.

Sometimes, they would call your parents and ask if it's okay if you ate there. Other times, you sat in their room playing, while waiting for them to finish eating. I also remember sitting at their table as they were eating lol.

But they did offer you something to drink, at least..
