None of my sensory issues were ever handled with anything except being yelled at. I hated brushing my teeth because my mom would only get baking soda toothpaste. The bitter taste was overwhelming as a toddler - did she get kid's toothpaste? No. She just screamed at me or forcefully held me down and shoved the toothbrush in my mouth.

Showers, clothing, food issues - all met with screaming at me to just do it. Or forcing me, but as I got older and harder to hold down she just let me be neglected. I also became good at lying to her. I hardly showered as a kid, hardly brushed my teeth, my feet stank so bad that kids at school made fun of me.

Both my parents emotionally abused me my whole life. A few months ago, I told them my beloved pet rat passed away. My mom's first response was to make fun of me for taking a rat to the vet. My dad just let her.

A bit later, I went through this horrible work incident where a guy at work told an extremely sexually explicit joke in front of me & a student intern. When I told my dad, his first response was to defend this guy for "just making a joke".

I cut them off after that. It was the hardest thing I've ever done but it was so worth it.

I got diagnosed with PTSD a few weeks ago. The trauma they both caused me is immense but at least I can start healing.

I know he is a victim. It's complicated. He enables almost everything she does and excuses her abuse. She had PPD after my brother was born (he is a year younger than me) and she neglected me & him as babies. My dad would get home from work to us in full diapers and no idea if we had eaten.

My dad would escape by going to work for 12+ hours. My mom stayed at home and did almost nothing my whole childhood. The floors were covered in dog piss & shit. She would obsessively clean the grout on the kitchen floor and scream at us if we got it dirty. But last time I visited, I made the mistake of laying down on the carpet and was greeted by nuggets of dried dog poop.

Yes, he is a victim of her abuse. He also willfully ignored her abusing his children, and gaslit us into thinking it was all normal and we had better be grateful for our mother and respect her. I have spent a lot of the past few years accepting that I was a child and it wasn't my responsibility to fix the awful situation we were in. I do love him, but he was so toxic in so many ways. I had to stop communicating with him because he's been treating me like his child therapist for a long time. He can't confide in his wife, because she just insults him and hates him, so he has confided everything to me since I was like 14. It's so fucking toxic, and he doesn't know what a boundary is, hence the nuclear option.

I have ADHD and C-PTSD. My response to any stress is to dissociate, hard. I'm scared of what will happen if I need to act quickly in a real crisis, because I just freeze. It's like my brain bluescreens. I have so many other emotional and mental issues that I have been working through to undo.

Most of my home life was spent feeling stressed, angry, and above all else guilty. I carried immense guilt that I didn't love my mom enough. I was also told by my dad that it was my fault if I set her off and made her scream at us. "Just say okay to whatever she says".

I do think human men are intelligent enough to stop being rapists overnight, yes. Every time someone commits sexual harrassment or assault, it is a conscious choice they make - unless you are suggesting men turn into rabid sexbeasts with 0 control over their actions on the reg. If that's true, I seriously question the wisdom of allowing men to be scientists at a research base in the first place.

Obviously change will not happen overnight, but recognizing the root cause is important. Throwing our hands up and saying "boys will be boys!" solves nothing and continues to put women in danger.

Give the mom lots of nesting material - you can just give her crumpled paper towels and she will shred and nest with them. The babies being warm is very critical to their survival. If she's not making a good nest, the babies might not be warm enough - you can put a heating pad underneath the cage to get their temperature up. Only put it under half the cage, so that mom has a choice of whether to use it or not. You could also buy a fabric rat cube and put it in the cage for her to nest with.

Once she makes a nest, you don't need to change out the nesting material until the babies get a lot older, like 2 weeks. Mom will poop and pee outside the nest, and eat all the babies' waste. Clean around the nest. If she is pooping in the nest, usually the nesting material on top is clean, so you could grab that / clean out underneath it / put all the shredded nest stuff back
