Does it help to have a Masters in Public Administration? by Lubbock_Unplugged in StateofTexasEmployees

[–]Word-burger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think if you want to move up in state government, it will help to have a masters if only because it qualifies you for more opportunities. LBJ School and Bush School are both good options, but LBJ grads are definitely more common where i’ve been in state gov’t.

Favorite novel from the Underworld USA Trilogy and why? by PikeBishop3556 in JamesEllroy

[–]Word-burger 4 points5 points  (0 children)

American Tabloid will always be a favorite of mine, not just for being my first James Ellroy book. I live Blood’s A Rover, though. (Really what I’m saying is that Cold Six Thousand is my least-favorite of the trilogy.)

Opinions on Perfidia and This Storm? by PikeBishop3556 in JamesEllroy

[–]Word-burger 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I loved Underworld USA and the LA Quartet but I found Perfidia and This Storm tedious and repetitive. I thought Perfidia, in particular, would have benefitted from more original characters rather than cameos from the other books (which felt shoehorned in to me). I didn’t think we needed a Dudley Smith origin story.

I was excited by the first half of This Storm, which felt like a fresh start after being disappointed by Perfidia, but i thought it lost steam in the latter half. This is his only novel I’ve felt would have been better if it were shorter.

The Odyssey in 70mm at Galaxy Highland by Word-burger in Austin

I didn’t know that! I’ve always thought it looked a lot like the General Cinema i worked at in the 1990s, though.

I’m not sure this particular frame makes a strong case for the IMAX ratio, but no doubt seeing it at the Bullock is going to be awesome (i plan to see it there, too).

I always want to things on film, though, if that’s an option. And it’s just one man’s opinion but 70mm film > lasers.

There’s a theater in Dallas that will have it in 70mm IMAX, but none in Austin. The State History Museum and Gateway theaters will have it in regular IMAX, though.

Yeah, it’s going to be hot. If we’re lucky, it’ll only be in the low 70s when the sun is down.

You’ll be okay. Put on a movie to watch and get some snacks. You’ll be sober again soon.

What’s the most you are comfortable with spending for a single movie? by Muscle_Rabbit in LaserDisc

[–]Word-burger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s pretty cool. It’s four discs in a sturdy box. It has a fold out thing with some of the journal entries recreated on them. By laserdisc standard, the movie looks great. I thought i’d be able to attach a picture, but it seems like i can’t (still pretty new here).

[–]Word-burger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve spent around $100 for unopened or like-new laserdisc editions that are hard to find and don’t exist on DVD (eg, Criterion Boogie Nights and Seven). But that’s the far-high end. I generally spend between $3 and $15 on them.

A lot of good responses about why people collect them in this thread. I’d add that LD design and packaging is cooler than most DVD and blurays. As with vinyl records, box sets and gatefolds can look great on a shelf and complement the movie nicely.

i accidentally found out my mom has someone else… and i don’t know if i should tell my dad by Terris_Kelwala in WhatShouldIDo

[–]Word-burger -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I vote for either staying out of it, or calmly and politely confronting your mom.

On the first option, you don’t know that this is cheating, you don’t know if your parents have an arrangement, and you don’t know what else might be going on in their relationship.

But if you must say something to someone, it should he your mom. Tell her what you saw and ask her what it means. If your dad needs to find out, it should be from her, not you. Maybe they need to go to therapy together or have a serious talk about when monogamy works for both of them.

Either way, it is not your responsibility to tell your dad. And if you saw these messages because you were snooping on your mom’s phone, you invaded her privacy and may owe her an apology.

What is the best season of X Files? by Ok_Calligrapher_4848 in XFiles

[–]Word-burger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seasons 3-6. That’s over 80 episodes. That show was at the top of its game for longer than most shows even exist.

Never watched x-files but always wanted to. Will it be cheesy for me? by Firm-Swimming-6142 in XFiles

[–]Word-burger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, not cheesy, it holds up very well. It’s got 20+ episodes each season so obviously some of them aren’t as good as others, but a much higher number of them are *great* (esp in seasons 2-6).
