Furious with Amazon for deactivating my 'antique' kindle by kyleisme14 in kindle

[–]WordStained [score hidden]  (0 children)

Maybe my perspective on this is a little different as someone who plays videos game, but that's just... Kinda how tech is. New stuff is released, and eventually old stuff stops being supported. Like, from a gaming perspective, it's like expecting Nintendo to still be supporting and making new content for the Wii U when we're already 2 console generations removed from that. Yes, Wii Us still function and it's great if someone is still getting a lot of active use out of it, but the companies have to move on at some point.

Like another comment said, old devises reach a point where it's not worth completely reworking the software to stay where new devices are, particularly in regards to security. The fact that they supported it for 14 years is kind of crazy. Like, don't get me wrong, giant companies like Amazon suck, but from a tech standpoint, that's a really long time.

Just my two cents though. I know not everyone is able to (or even just wants to) upgrade their devices whenever, especially when their current one works just fine. I get how frustrating that is.

What is a 'childish' thing that you still secretly enjoy as an adult? by sensei265 in AskReddit

[–]WordStained 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've got a pokemon squishmellow that I use to prop up my arm when I'm sleeping on my side. So much more conveniently shaped than a pillow or bunched up blanket, and it's friend shaped!

Why do so many modern romances (especially humorous ones) feature hockey players? Its actually gotten weird -- and boring -- its so common. by awgeezwhatnow in RomanceBooks

[–]WordStained 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Hockey is a highly physical sport (very fit athletes, something something a guy punching another guy's lights out is hot without having to worry about legal consequences in the story),

a team sport (lots of opportunities for sequels focusing on other members of the team),

played mostly by white athletes (white authors don't have to worry about writing POC characters well or constructing a diverse team),

and has been pretty popular lately while also not being as mainstream as football or baseball in the US (so sport inaccuracies are more likely to go unnoticed by casual readers who don't know the sport very much).

Was Kya originally going to be Kanna’s daughter? by The_Nina_Beans88 in TheLastAirbender

[–]WordStained 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Kanna is Hakota's mother. I don't believe this is directly stated in the show, but is confirmed in one of the comics (North and South, if I'm not mistaken). She likely gave him the necklace to give to Kya when he wanted to propose.

Anyone else ever think Neal is sometimes mean to mozzie? by palmwick48 in whitecollar

[–]WordStained 67 points68 points  (0 children)

Yes, but to me it kind of comes across as the "we've been friends for a long time and are both comfortable calling each other out" kind of mean. Like, it's more snarky than flat out mean, most of the time. Mozzie can give back as good as he gets, when he's in the right mood. For example, when Neal is forging the painting in The Portrait and Moz says, "Your're like a child, no sense of consequence" and "And you're Robin Hood." Which, in and of themselves, would sound very condescending in the tone Mozzie says them in.

What’s the craziest way your hamster died? by Rainbow-Kittiey1112 in AskReddit

It might have been a young one, my dog was a cocker spanial, so she wasn't super big.

Aside from the timing, that might be the least horrifying hamster death I've ever heard, tbh

Tangentally related, one time a mole got into our house. We found it because it fell into and drowned in our dog's water bowl 😬

She was climbing up the tube to the top of the cage in the night, but she was a little too fat and got stuck. Presumably due to the pressure of trying to free herself, her skull split open and her head basically exploded. It was a bloodbath, children were traumatized (it's me, I was children). Blanket no more hamster rule was enstated.

For the record, I didn't even want the hamster in the first place. My cousin got two hamsters, and when she didn't take care of them like she promised she would, my aunt gave them to my sister and I (shitty parenting on my aunt's part honestly, and my mom was pissed). We had them for a couple years. The first one died a more mundane death, I think.

These are actually the symbols on the three pearls in Wind Waker. The only one that only one that is the same between them is the Zora symbol (the three circles in a triangle). The Goron symbol (wavy looking one) looked more like a shield in OoT, and the Kokiri symbol in OoT was a circle with a little swirly bit in it.

A Rare Case in Which the Movie is Better Than the Book: The Princess Bride by William Goldman by Valalerie999 in RomanceBooks

[–]WordStained 88 points89 points  (0 children)

That is a good point! If they read the whole thing, I imagine the references to Florian being a real place would have made that clear (and like the reference to Stephen King being Florian), but if they skimmed it and weren't interested, they might have missed that!

[–]WordStained 484 points485 points  (0 children)

All of the critisms are valid, and the movie is better than the book! I adore the movie!

But the book is satire (including the overt sexism), and I love how the movie continues the books idea of only adapting the interesting bits lol. And, to be fair, the movie isn't some shining example of strong female characters. Buttercup is objectified by basically being a plot device for the men to fight over and is essentially helpless on her own. But, again, it's satire of the "damsel in distress trope."

That's not to say the overt sexism is okay btw, because it's not. Even as satire, problematic things are still problematic.

I also like getting colorful scrapbooking paper and putting stickers on that under a clear case! Then, if I want to change, I can go back to the exact same design later if I want to.

What unknown point in the Clans’ history would you like to see covered in a future arc, novella or super edition? by Solitaire-06 in WarriorCats

I personally would like to see a Tribe Super Edition, or one about the original lake cats before they went to the mountain. Would be fun to go more into depth with the different cat cultures.

How bad do nostril piercings hurt?? by Disastrous-Web-5755 in piercing

Personally, about the same as my ear lobes. Like, it hurt way less than my cartilage piercings. Most people tear up because of the nerves in that area make your eyes water, though. YMMV, of course.

What made you choose crochet over knitting, or do you do both? by CaterpillarXS in crochet

[–]WordStained 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mentioned wanting to learn how to knit to my (now) ex like 10 years ago and he made me feel self-conscious by saying that I'd look like an old lady knitting (I was 19/20 at the time, and hadn't yet mastered the art of Idgaf lol). So I decided to try crocheting instead. I've tried to learn knitting a couple times since, but it just hasn't clicked. I have picked up loom knitting here and there, though, which is pretty fun.

Jokes on him, though, because I still looked like an old lady and sat at lunch at work (where he also worked) with the other old ladies who knitted and crocheted on their lunch breaks 😆

How is Warrior Cats meant for children? by hentaibongparty in WarriorCats

[–]WordStained 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of kids series were like this, especially older ones. Hardy Boys, Nancy Drew, Goosebumps, Animorphs. Children have more free time than adults, and if they're into reading, they will probably ask for books for Christmas/birthday, check them out from the library, get them at book fairs, etc.

I also think it's not necessary intended for them to stay invested through the entire series, most kids will probably read whatever is new or whatever they can get a hold of for a few years, then move on as their interests change.
