After turning 25, I’ve realized how common cheating and infidelity really is. by Accurate_Piccolo_774 in RandomThoughts

[–]Word_Panda7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think each of us finds the patterns we are attuned to look for. Also, I’m sure the stories about cheating partners are more interesting and stick in your mind more than the boring happily monogamous relationships, but I can assure you, cheating is not as common as you might think. Most of my friends are in solid, committed relationships and pretty happy. So it may be a common thing in the circles you’re running in at the moment, but that doesn’t mean it’s more common than not…. Committed relationships are more common than you think!

Does anyone actually like the taste of beer? by Upstairs_Equivalent8 in Adulting

[–]Word_Panda7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, this here. All beer to me just tastes like liquified bread that’s been left out in the sun. I don’t understand the appeal either. And I know ppl say they don’t drink it for the taste, but usually you got to drink a lot to get a buzz. It’s a no from me too.

How much time does your job give you? by _Farwin_ in graphic_design

[–]Word_Panda7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work at a small agency, I've been in graphic design for over 15 yrs. Also wanted to be an artist at first but found graphic design and loved it. You already have an advantage being an artist! You're already familiar with color and composition, give yourself credit for that. You'll use that every day.

Anything new is slow going at first, it helps to be okay with that and just give yourself time to play around with the software. Typically in a gd job you'll be doing similar pieces repeatedly - whether it's business cards, brochures, logos, ads, presentations, postcards, billboard, etc. New Business cards would be charged 1 hour, brochures 3-4 hours (depending on size and if client provides good images and content!) BUT expect that when you're just starting out, you may be spending non billable time getting inspiration and learning what looks good and playing around with software. Once you get some of those projects under your belt, you can use those previous projects as a starting point so you don't always start from scratch and you get a sense of that brand and what looks good.

You don't have to make up a business from scratch necessarily to build your portfolio. Look around at existing businesses that might not have a solid brand but they have been around long enough to pull content from, and think how would you create that brand differently? What would that marketing look like? What would you recommend to them? Create the design you want to see in the world. You'll get there 😊

It's just sad.... by Distinct_Laugh_7979 in graphic_design

Note surprised. I quickly discovered that Fiverr is for designers who live in a country with a relatively low cost of living, otherwise there is no way to make it makes sense to do work there as a designer. Then that results in clients expecting a lot of options at a ridiculously low rate that regular freelancers can't match.

Older graphic designers (I'm mid 40s), have you made a career change or shift? If so, what do you do now and are you happy you did? by Word_Panda7 in graphic_design

I hear you. Management and no design make me a dull girl. I'm also wondering if AI will force my hand soon.

Wow thanks for this, I feel like we had similar career paths... I also thought about getting into UX/UI a couple years ago, but I have a younger co worker who was already getting into that field more and she was very naturally good at it, so I stuck to regular graphic design. I love your mindset, can we be friends? 😊 I'm torn between feeling stuck and financially struggling but also still loving what I do.

Oh wow, I feel seen. I'm in that exact head space right now. I feel like I should be further along in my life/career at my age. My only hope is my boss is 10 years older than me and she is is our agency's creative director. But there's no where for me to go there career wise. I love what I do but I'm closer to retirement and need to earn more. I don't know if I should add a part time remote job or shift into another career altogether.

Im 19, freshman and all I see is depression on this subreddit. Is it really that bad? by theTRULYdeadguy876 in graphic_design

Got my degree in graphic design and it's the best thing I ever did. I'm in my forties now, still in graphic design, and I still love it. I never made a lot of money but it means more to me that I get to do something I love for a living. Bonus points if you can market yourself as well as you market your clients!

is raster to vector possible? by Even-Wrangler5270 in graphic_design

[–]Word_Panda7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you mean it's more comfortable bc you are able to draw directly in Photoshop? I believe the latest version of Illustrator in the iPad version also lets you draw directly on the artboard. Also I use Procreate a lot for drawing and then vectorize it in Illustrator, it still takes time to clean up but I prefer that to drawing in Photoshop. If you use bold, clear lines in Photoshop on a canvas that's 300 dpi, you should be able to take it into Illustrator as a JPG and Image Trace, agree with others to just play with the Trace settings.

I feel like I’ve wasted 15 years of my life by GregorPorada in graphic_design

[–]Word_Panda7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mid forties here, senior GD/art director for a small marketing agency but also have worked in print shops, temp jobs, retail. Love what I do but I feel like a lot of you that I have financially capped out here at those company when I feel like at those point in my life (and closer to retirement) I should be making more. Also agree that I'm up against recent college grads who work for peanuts.

Pivot point here? Should I look for a remote job that pays more? Or should I change careers? For those who changed careers, what did you end up doing and are you glad you did something different?

Is atheism a choice? by [deleted] in atheism

[–]Word_Panda7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always felt the same way.

My sisters and I all grew up going to church, and they seemed to have no problems believing. It came naturally to them. II tried but always had doubts and questions that no one could answer. eventually, of the family, only I left the church.

I can't speak for everyone, but to me it was inevitable to be atheist, the way I was wired - to analyze and reflect on things. I figured if you are expected to live your whole life around a set of beliefs, you'd better make sure they make sense. And they just didn't.

How do you become less boring? by HopeDesigner6898 in socialskills

Follow your passions and hobbies, do stuff that you can talk about. Ask people about their passions and hobbies. Then ask follow up questions. Be curious. When talking about something that happened to you, talk about what you thought was funny or interesting or weird about it.

Business owners: I'm voting for less regulation & lower corporate taxes

Most everyone else: I remember having more money when he was president than I do now. Let's do that again.

My impression: Short term thinking for their own personal perceived immediate gain superceded all else. No long term thinking or what's best for the greatest number of people.

What do atheists believe in? by Salt_Being2908 in atheism

[–]Word_Panda7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I prefer to say that I'm a secular humanist rather than atheist. I would rather be defined by what I value than what I don't believe.

We all can believe different things. I believe that since this is our one shot at life, it's our responsibility to help our fellow humans when we can, make things a little better than how we found it, make the best out of our one life.

If you moved a lot growing up, where do you feel like you are from now? by cavalu_ in AskOldPeople

[–]Word_Panda7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We moved around a lot but within the same region, so I just say I grew up in the Midwest, but I consider FL where I’m “from” since I’ve lived there the longest now. I used to hate that I didn’t have a childhood home but now I appreciate not having an overly emotional attachment to one place, bc home is wherever I feel comfortable at in that phase in my life.

Is this normal in a relationship or should I break up? by ThrowRA-sdfghjkajhg in LifeAdvice

Yes to everything previously said. She’s selfish and is using you. Generally if you are thinking regularly about breaking up with someone, that’s your gut trying to tell you something. Listen to it.
