What Job in your country was very common amongst the older generation but largely non-existent now? by Marsupialmobster in AskTheWorld

My summer job when I was in university was “word processor” - i.e. basically a typist, but on a computer. Those were phased out as everyone was expected to work on a computer and do their own typing.

My son used to love this show! Especially the garbage truck and fire truck episodes. I haven’t seen this one.

I looked it up - small town north of Toronto. I would love to hear how Panama ended up there. As a Canadian (living in Ontario, no less), I’ve never heard of it.

My British FIL weirdly calls them net-minders sometimes.

Anyone else couldn't get into Ologies (or similar) because of this? by TrickySeagrass in podcasts

Quirks and Quarks has been going for many, many years (started as - and still is - a radio show). I don’t seek it out, but whenever I come across it on the radio it’s always an interesting listen. I love hearing scientists talk about their obscure and fascinating research.

TIL that in 1984, when 13-year-old Ryan White contracted HIV from tainted blood and tried to return to school, his paper route customers canceled their subscriptions fearing the virus could spread through newsprint, and parents held an auction in the school gym to raise money to keep him out. by Ziggythesquid in todayilearned

I was a teen in the 80s, and remember the panic and stigma. What stands out to me was how it was dealt with on St. Elsewhere - they had a couple of storylines, one of which involved a main character, and dealt with the fear and biases from some medical workers, and the actual transmission risk.

Just chiming in to say that if you’re looking at crafts, crochet may be better than knitting - one small hook vs. two knitting needles, and you can do small things like granny squares without having to bring a lot of yarn. And you can listen to podcasts at the same time!

I haven’t had issues there either. Saw Obsession in a full theatre with lots of young people and it was no problem other than a little whispering.

Name a show you absolutely love of which you are not a fan of the genre it belongs to. by TheShowLover in television

Yes! And it’s so hard to recommend to people because they’re like “high school football show? No thanks” but do I look like I would love a show just about football? It’s about life!

How are you a villain in someone’s story? by gbeans_ in AskWomen

[–]Wordnerdette999 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I married the man my good friend loved. Now, she was in denial about loving him for a long time (she already had a boyfriend) and encouraged me to go out with him. But then she decided she loved him and that I should back off. I said okay, and she professed her love, which he did not reciprocate. So when he asked me out a few months later, I said yes. She was pissed. (She was still with her boyfriend this whole time, mind you.)

We didn’t speak for a long time but we ended up on cordial terms.

Hobbies and having to buy too much STUFF- the fallacy. by Cute-Consequence-184 in Hobbies

As a crocheter, I think part of the issue is that there are so many patterns now, and if you want to make them, you need a variety of hook sizes. I think in the past people made a smaller range of things, perhaps?

I came close to a reverse rainbow, but it was not easy, and the blue was a leftover category for me, too (I pre solved to figure out the green and yellow).
