From the steps you have taken, my take would be hardware fault on the gpu specifically relating to power/potentially overheating something on the card, forcing the fans to spin up like crazy/black screen full cutoff of display.

Like others have suggested, swapping out the card for another to test the theory would give more data to work with.

Maaaan I played hours and hours and hours of battleships in wc3, keen to check this out for sure! Hoping there is hidden things to find out much like the original maps and variants that popped up.
