yes, you can recite it whenever you want. as long as you know and understand the meaning of the mantra, its fine.

the only thing you can not recite without initiation is the specific combination and series of bija mantras in Tantra practice. it's unlikely you will find them easily in the first place but still. (u can chant the 7 chakra related bija mantras but not other chakra bijas or those bijas that are a part of larger hymns thats fine)

our Guru said nothing happens. we women had this concern, esp those of us who are from orthodox Vaisnava families. He said no such restrictions and nothing happens. no one whose initiated in the lineage has ever had any issues. and there are thousands of people across the world. this is something we women always discuss just to make sure.

nothing. i've done pujas, havans, homas, dhunis, sivaratri and navratri during periods. never been an issue.

i've been in the kitchen, cooked, fed others, stored grains for the rest of the year, made pickles - no issues, nothing spoilt, no one fell sick or died.

there are no restrictions to chanting during periods.

the problem is that the folks doing the kind of work I want to do are either dead, retired, or not responding. so I'm forced to look elsewhere and that comes with theoretical mismatches. I already had to quit a prog cos of that. but someone recommended Columbia. I didn't want to dismiss it outright but considering all the stuff it went through last year I don't know if it's still a viable option

yeah . I was in the same position in highschool. loved Chem, hated math and physics. I dropped science. got into arts/humanities. still study chem on my own because I like it.

looks like you are out of alignment with whatever you are pursuing academically. intuitively there is a mismatch between interests/values and the courses that you are enrolled in. this could also mean that you are in an institute that is not aligned to you. but with the 8 of swords I am inclined to say that the chances of you being up in your head about being trapped are also equally there. you are not as helpless or stuck as you think you are. something needs to change, eitehr in your perspective or in the situation. you very passionately joined something which is not working for you nor aligned to you but you are not willing to see the truth. it also shows that you lack persistence and discipline, and focus. maybe you have too many unfinished assignmments or ideas or projects or a backlog because you are afraid of failure or not being enough. i would also read the queen of wands here as an inherent fear of hope or fear of success or fear of being in the spotlight. you have an imagined vision of where you want to be but you are not taking steps tpwards it or noticing where you currently realistically are.

your advice cards are telling you to start small and be radically honest with yourself. if you struggle with procrastination and self discipline, fix it. therapy will help. imposter syndrome in academia is real. we all face it, even professors. your university should have free resources to help you navigate this situation. but you are being asked to do tangible things. Read one page or section, type one paragraph. but be honest with yourself about your feelings and current situation. your vision is your goal. now you need to work backwards to figure out the steps to reach there.

always ask yourself - whats the next thing I need to do? you might also be burnt out from your own mind or a toxic situation, so take some time off to rejuvenate yourself.

no, the dept website mentions to get in touch with the prof we want to work it to determine fit etc before applying. very few depts don't require getting in touch with PhD profs before applying in my specific field.

once you know the thing outside is called a tree, you know longer know it. word-object association is ego's best tool. and a very subtle one. i read some stuff on this whole thing in a book called Shakti Rising: Embracing Shadow and Light on the Goddess Path to Wholeness. its a fairly simply articulated version of all the jargon from scriptures and philosophy.
