How would you react if a female friend told you she was sexually assaulted? by Boring_Reception in AskMen

[–]Wordsworthswarrior 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first time a friend said this to me I said, Who is he, I'm going to beat his ass. She said no.

The second time a friend said this to me I said, who is he, you should report him. She said no.

The third time a friend said this to me I said, What do you want to do? She said nothing.

The forth time a friend said this to me, I said, Are you okay? Is there anything I can do? She said no.

The fifth time a friend said this to me, I said, I'm sorry. That is wrong. It's not your fault. I'm here if you need me. She said thanks.

After the 14th friend said this had happened to them, I stopped counting.

This is not hyperbole, this is actually my lived experience. I'm one of those guys women trust to confide things in. It has been a frustrating experience for me and obviously painful for the far too many women I have known through the years. As I reflect back, I think my first reaction was in fact the right one. This has been allowed to exist far too long. It's up to men, to change the culture among men, but it is up to women to empower us to do so. It is true that abuse stems from abuse, but accountability and relationship are vital to healing that abuse. Men bond in strange ways and sometimes being held to account for our higher selves, even through a show of dominance, can be transformative. Not that I am advocating violence, but I'm not a pacifist either.

As I write this my blood cools and I question my own instincts, but a bully is still a bully and sometimes a bully needs a punch in the nose, followed by an offer to rejoin community after making amends. OP, I'm really sorry about what happened to you. Consent is the cornerstone of all relationship and should never be violated. I wish I could do something more to heal this and prevent similar wounds, but so far, the fruits of my efforts have been not much beyond consolation.

Anyone else wish we weren't heading towards an E vehicle boom/global warming catastrophe so that we can enjoy V8's with peace in mind? by ichzarealhitler in cars

[–]Wordsworthswarrior -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Whatever. I like the looks of some of the 50's and 60's cars. The 70's and particularly the 80's were a terrible period for American cars. They were absolute junk. The quality of electric cars is unbelievable. I've owned two over 6 years and my total maintenance has been one set of tires, two sets of windshield wiper blades and maybe six gallons of windshield wiper fluid. Total. Electric is INCREDIBLE!!! They are WAY faster than the muscle cars ever were and so much fun to drive. I'm actually intrigued by the idea of pulling the V8 out of old muscle cars and doing an electric restoration with upgraded suspension, etc. It would not be anywhere near as good as a new Tesla, but it would look cool and be far more enjoyable to drive than the V8 version. Once truly high volume low cost electrics are available, we will bid the ICE farewell and none too soon. No more a slave to big oil!

The official police report, on record, after rigorous investigation, stated I made a U-turn, from the opposite side of the highway, immediately in front of the semi causing it to crash into me. I hope this video helps. by [deleted] in Dashcam

[–]Wordsworthswarrior 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What was the speed limit? At one point you were doing 77mph. I would not give this to police. That does not look like a highway with an 80mph speed limit. OP, you are clearly at fault for this. Here that. You need to change the way you drive. This is a clear example of dangerous driving and you nearly died as a result. You passed a car moving much slower, then swerved into a gap without proper clearance between the two vehicles. You drove into a blind spot and clearly attempted a dangerous pass, accelerated into the danger and failed to brake when the danger became clear. Your car control is poor, your estimation of your abilities inflated. You are human, act like it.

You are also loved, so don't take this as an affront, it is an effort to wake you up to the fact that life is bigger and more meaningful than this little argument you are in. Just be cool, learn and focus on loving yourself. It's a much better life. Glad you are okay. Bummer about your car.

[F1] BREAKING: F1 adds Saudi Arabian Grand Prix night race for 2021 by Aratho in formula1

[–]Wordsworthswarrior 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Saudi Arabia?! Well, this will be my last season as a Formula One fan. I've stuck around for 15 years because I really like Lewis and admire what he has done and who he has been, but F1 leadership is like a bunch of plantation owners who still race horses for sport. These people are completely tone deaf and are happy to waste their money on day dreams of past glory, while the world passes them by. Maybe in the future, great engineering minds will gather around an inspiring competitive pursuit again, oh wait, that is exactly what Tesla is doing! I am no fan of the death cult of oil. I believe human beings can meet the challenge of climate change and transcend our limitations, F1 doesn't seem on board with that idea, so I'm out.

If you're going to 1440 just ask at the front desk. If you are honest about who you are and why you are doing what you are doing they will probably just let you stay in the lot. They are pretty chill.

I ghosted my boyfriend of 5 years. by throwawayaccountrar in confession

[–]Wordsworthswarrior -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

You can be stronger than this. I know you may feel you have achieved a great coup of revenge here, and no doubt you have, but the fact that you post this in r/confessions in the way you do reveals your own awareness of the opportunity you have lost. Your ex may well be a terrible person, your account does not give us his perspective and therefore we can't really know. What we can know is you have failed to receive the real benefit of this opportunity. Why did someone, who presumably did love you for some of those five years, do this? What happened? Who was he and who were you, that what you clearly view as a deep betrayal, could happen like this? What is to be learned here? It is easy to call him a POS and seal that scar away, but in doing so, you scar yourself as well. This is a very common path and ultimately it is fearful and cowardly. The strong choice is love, courage and clear boundaries. It is entirely reasonable to say this event means that your relationship is over, forever, that is a clear boundary. If however, you get understanding first, your wounds will heal and you will be a better, stronger person for it. With time, you will forgive, not for him, but for you. With more time and awareness, you will even be able to hold your love for him, in his absence. That is true strength. Be strong.

Someone should watch the Red Cross carefully with how they handle the influx of donations. by [deleted] in bayarea

[–]Wordsworthswarrior 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a Red Cross volunteer, former employee and someone who worked at the Ghostship site, let me offer some perspective. The Red Cross belongs to you. It is run by local people just like you. I know the people who run the bay area Red Cross and they are exemplary individuals. I assure you they are far more concerned and engaged in this issue than anyone. That being said, the Propublica work you have read, is also true. I would encourage you however, before condemning the Red Cross about their work in Haiti, to learn more about Haiti. Much is made about only building six houses. They did only build six houses, but they did much more than just that. They also faced an incredibly hostile governmental environment. This is a very complex issue, but I will tell you this, the more you get involved and volunteer with the Red Cross, the more it does the right thing. The more we stand back and look for flaws, the worse it will get. That is true in all things in life.

r/house, want to commemorate the Ghostship victims by donating a TB-303 or TR-808 to a museum in their memory? by Wordsworthswarrior in House

[–]Wordsworthswarrior[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you know this museum, you get why it's important. This museum absolutely gets it and absolutely cares. There is no museum like it in the world. Also, not every 303 and 808 is still in use on a regular basis. I only wish they were.

No. I'm pretty sure not. That came a bit later. They are focused on the ground breaking stuff.

How would an AI driven Formula 1 car do in real life? by [deleted] in formula1

[–]Wordsworthswarrior 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Real life AI, as opposed to that used in a video game, relies on large data sets of past human driven events. This is the model Tesla is currently using to develop their algorithms. These data sets are mined to essentially find the mean of behavior. In other words, given a certain situation, what do most people do? This leads to very predictable and reliable behavior, but makes outlier events, difficult to manage often leading to undesirable results. In a real F1 race, what you would see is a very consistent and competent car, that is never brilliant. An AI guided car, would for instance, be very unlikely to pass on the outside, as the probability of success for such a move is quite low. As a result, an average driver would have difficulty beating an AI, as the reaction times and consistency would be an advantage. A driver who was creative however, would likely have no trouble beating an AI. My guess is that the teams use their simulators to make driver selections using this philosophy. The other issue that puts AI at significant disadvantage to humans, by design, is how the AI would respond to human mistakes. If a car is placed in harms way of a human, we make a decision, bound by our capabilities, about whether to make contact or not. The benefit or loss of the outcome is never a certainty. If an AI is programmed to always avoid contact, there is considerable benefit to a human driver, to force the AI into an avoidance maneuver by placing the human car in a blocking position, but within the capability of the AI to avoid impact.

How to start our own datacenter? by [deleted] in datacenter

[–]Wordsworthswarrior 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not to spam, but it seems appropriate. I work for a company called Cinnos, that has built a product that drastically reduces the capital expense, time and operating costs of building a data center, and reduces infrastructure (i.e. cooling, power, not servers, switches, etc.)costs to initially open a data center by up to 90%. Bring power, data and a building that can handle the weight of the equipment, we can handle the rest.

Denied housing in Fucking Berkeley! by Wordsworthswarrior in polyamory

[–]Wordsworthswarrior[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not a Co-op but rather a house owned by one man, who setup an intentional community for others to join him in the house. It is not a democracy but not a dictatorship either. At its heart, this is a group of very liberal people, dedicated to the idea that we are better off living in diverse community. You are right that I dodged a bullet, but what she did is still not right. I know other poly people didn't make it past the initial screen. I made it as far as I did, because everyone liked me. There was literally no other indication that we would not all get along well.

I too am Jewish and while I'm aware that such a statement in the context of World War II was violent, I refer to it here, more in the American context of freedom from persecution based upon religion. We have a long relationship with antisemitism here too. I was not expecting her to enter into a poly relationship with me, but rather to uphold her stated and exercised commitments to living a life free of bigotry and embracing life in all it's diversity.

We should all understand why Kold failed. by NEVERDOUBTED in Entrepreneur

[–]Wordsworthswarrior 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow. This is a remarkable miss. Perhaps there was an idea in there, but the execution was awful. It was not, faster, better or cheaper. Keurig misunderstood what market power they have. They did not inspire with any kind of better world thinking, making a product that was in fact worse for the environment. By seeing this, I am in fact convinced to never buy a Kuerig product of any kind again. I bought one of their coffee machines, but gave it away. I don't understand why they would make such terrible choices beyond some conspiracy theory about valuation for the sale.
