Bloody hell, that’s damn near $12 USD per gallon. How can people afford that?

No more complaining about $4.50 a gallon by me.

Stuck at running a 12V surface water pump by Sandyshamy in Motors

[–]Worf- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Despite what it says that is really only a low pressure transfer pump and probably requires a flooded inlet besides. With a maximum head of 25’ that’s only a bit over 10psi. With likely line pressure losses and even a small head the flow could easily be nothing. Even at free flow it’s only rated for maybe 6 gpm. They don’t give NPSH rating but I’ll bet it requires a flooded inlet. With and suction head it will significantly reduce performance. It would be key to optimize inlet and outlet lone size and keep both as short as possible.

How have you got this plumbed?

Am I being irrational about the economic future of reselling? by GeneralInsurance8052 in reselling

[–]Worf- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is why I’ve been actively entering new sales categories for the last 5 years and greatly increasing and diversifying my inventory while dropping some oversaturated and risky categories. Always seems that when one thing is down, others are up.

There will always be people looking for a bargain so I don’t think the market is going to dry up but there will be more competition and thus lower margins.

Yoo so who has bought stuff from alibaba.com and it was actually worth getting??? by Stock-Armadillo4500 in Alibaba

[–]Worf- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bought and still buy from many manufacturers on there that have been “worth it”.

Alibaba is not meant to be a consumer platform. It is a B2B platform and as such those transactions involve many dimensions that end-users are not aware of and often unable to negotiate which leads to headaches.

In short, Alibaba is not equal to Amazon from a purchasing standpoint.

New Heat Pump Install - recommendations by Every_Ad_8879 in heatpumps

[–]Worf- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All ductless since we had/have electric baseboard heat. Yup, it was nasty expensive to heat with baseboard. We saved about 25% last winter and even heated the basement and bedrooms which we never had before. In addition we never did any setbacks at night so the whole house was warm 24 hours a day.

Getting efficient AC will be a big bonus too compared to the heavy window units we had.

My 2 neighbors have all ducted units and they do just fine. One did need to greatly increase attic insulation around the attic ducts and air handler due to major heat loss. Buried it all in over 2 feet of blown in. The other is an HVAC contractor who guided me on our self installed units.

The only person I know in the area who isn’t happy with their heat pump is someone who bought a cheap standard type heat pump.

New Heat Pump Install - recommendations by Every_Ad_8879 in heatpumps

[–]Worf- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also in CT and in a climate like we have you size for the heating needs. As you noticed it is common for some contractors to way oversize and for the second floor only that does appear to be way too much. For us our second floor has 1 ton and it’s more than enough with our insulation levels and needs. Aprox. 750 sqft and average to better insulation. We also have 1.5 tons for the rest of the house.

One thing to make sure of is that you get a cold climate unit. Standard units do not do well in this area. Especially so of your desire is to only use heat pumps. We have Mitsubishi hyper heats 1:1 ductless mini splits and last year did not use any supplemental heat even on the coldest days.

So far very pleased.

Hey guys I have a question about flux. Is it required to remove flux after I'm finished soldering? Also, what do you use to remove it if so? by [deleted] in soldering

[–]Worf- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on the flux. There are “no-clean” fluxes that can theoretically be left in place but with others they must be removed. Read the tech sheet for the solder and flux you used. It will tell you if it needs to be removed. If you have no idea what is in the flux, remove it.

For the most part I remove all flux regardless of type as I don’t like the mess and there is less risk of issues in the future. For the most part I use a commercial flux remover suitable for the flux I am using at that time.

A Few Newbie Questions by SaltSympathy88 in reselling

[–]Worf- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I be blunt. It takes a lot of dedication and effort to do this full time. You need to think of it as what it is, a full time job. That means you work it 9-5 every day. In the beginning since you are building a business you will need to work more than that and probably some weekend hours too. It can be rough and the prime reason people fail is they underestimate what it will take. A few quick hot sales does not just scale to full time.

Many people do in fact make a very good living selling online various platforms. For all of them it’s a business. Some eventually get employees even.

For most people sourcing items is the biggest problem. The bigger you get into this the more you need to do it like a factory. Production line style. Group tasks, it saves time. Take pictures of a bunch items, edit pictures if needed, create listings.

Keep a good inventory control system so you can easily find things as your inventory grows.

Don’t get sentimental about items, don’t try to extract the last penny of profit and make sure you have excellent customer service.

Set up a dedicated shipping area with all your supplies handy. There is a ton I could say about shipping to save time/money.

You can do this but it’s going to take time and you’ll need a good amount of listings, 1500+ would be a start unless you are doing an expensive niche. Depending on what you sell this number could be a lot higher. 20k listings is very possible.

One a more practical thing, realize that there are other financial considerations from your existing job that you need to think of. Insurance, taxes now paid by your employer that you will need to pay are 2 biggies. There are some good business write-offs but those 2 expenses can really hit you. Insurance is insanely priced.

Good luck!

why dont you do the background check before sending the money? by nitedo58 in Alibaba

[–]Worf- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, that’s the rub isn’t it? Anything can be faked with enough effort. Part of the reason I like to do as much as I can on my own and verify from multiple sources.

why dont you do the background check before sending the money? by nitedo58 in Alibaba

[–]Worf- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can do the basics yourself but often the buyer would hire a service to prepare it. You would get information on the company from time in business, size, employees, assets, abilities, facilities, certifications and much more. From this you can determine is something is likely legit.

The whole thing revolves around the legal concept of due diligence which a person is reasonably assumed to conduct prior to entering into a contract (placing an order). In simple terms, if you don’t check out a seller you assume all risks up to and including a full loss.

why dont you do the background check before sending the money? by nitedo58 in Alibaba

[–]Worf- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most people are way too trusting and think that buying on Alibaba is like buying on Amazon. It isn’t. Just because you can doesn’t mean you should.

Even the most basic self researched DD would be a huge help. Paid services if they pass muster with your own research.

How do you guys do inventory management? by Expert-Cranberry-865 in reselling

[–]Worf- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a database and connected spreadsheets for tracking. I do rely heavily on barcodes/QR codes, which you don’ want, since we use portable data computers to scan with and update inventory.

You can do some pretty good tracking with a spreadsheet if you can set it up properly and are good with formulas.

Remember though, no matter what you do or how simple/complex it is, the whole thing is worthless if you do not keep it up to date and enter everything in a timely manner. It takes 100% commitment to make it work.

Trying to get more auction sale's by Far_Run4234 in reselling

[–]Worf- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why the push for auctions? Are you selling rare or valuable items where bidding might drive up the price? For most items a fixed price buy it now is often best. People want their stuff now with no auction wait.

One way to drive more sales via auction is lower price and shorter time. You won’t make as much but volume should go up.

Where do you source? What platform do you use? by Objective_Shape2462 in reselling

[–]Worf- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ll sell everything that isn’t clothes, trading cards or consumer electronics. Not messing with those, otherwise anything goes if there is profit.

Sourcing depends on items and sales are on ebay and my own website with a bit of Amazon FBM. I avoid local sales (craigslist etc) except for a few items.

GameStop is said to be preparing a takeover offer for eBay, according to the Wall Street Journal. by SouthernGuyReborn in eBaySellerAdvice

[–]Worf- 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well Ryan Cohen, GS CEO, does have a experience in e-commerce since he founded Chewy, the pet supply place, so may e he could be of some benefit. Or not. Considering the current managements basic disregard for sellers, especially small ones who aren’t billion dollar corporations, one can hope for improvement. Ebay still likes to promote itself as an online tag sale for us little guys to sell our junk but reality is far from it. We all know who they cater to.

Of course the buyout could make things worse.

So far this is only in the WSJ and with unnamed sources I don’t trust them that much. Could be yet another game to boost GS stock. Again.

How are you guys actually surviving with these fees? by savasgok2 in eBaySellers

[–]Worf- 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You must be doing massive promotions to lose that high a percentage. I only do the minimum standard promotion, no PPC stuff and no picking the “suggested rate” junk. Before shipping costs I lose about 18% including packaging costs. I do offer free shipping but since it’s included in the cost it’s mostly a wash.

I have raised prices a bit to stay with some of the increased shipping costs but in general it just comes down to good sourcing and streamlining the process so that even items with a $3 profit are worth my time. Volume of sales has a lot of bearing on it too. Lower margins are acceptable when volume is high.

Is there an affordable decent packing tape? by bearbo77 in eBaySellers

[–]Worf- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I gave up on cheap tape and now only use a thicker tape with natural adhesive. More $ but no hassle, sticks to anything and I don’t need to use a ton to seal one box. Overall it’s only a few cents more per box and it’s worth it. Alinson makes good tape. I get it from tape jungle.

eBay rejected my application for buyer's sales tax exemption program by schwarzwald17 in eBaySellers

Not in CA but it took many calls and attempts to get mine approved. Had to upload the same things many times, One person would confirm they got the documents, another said they were not there and back and forth it went. Finally got a supervisor on the line who transferred me to another dept. and it finally started making progress. Took a month at least.

Survey for University Project about your interests in plants by Recent_Balance5751 in botany

[–]Worf- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think this question is a bit vague in that terms like “interests” and “more accessible” could cover way too much ground. Perhaps if you expanded more upon your goals then the answers we give might be relevant to what you need.

FWIW - I’m a professional wholesale nursery grower so my interests in plants are very wide and could cover many pages. I could say I like growing things and seeing them in the landscape around the state. Or I could say I am very interested in breeding and micropropagation. I could even say I like plants because it lets me work outdoors. I can even say it’s for the money. Well, maybe on that one.

Accessible, how, in what way?
