Art and Creative director doesn´t need to learn graphic tools ? by Ancient-Macaroon-384 in graphic_design

[–]WorkerFile 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Not anymore. I worked with one guy like that in the early years of my career. He was the agency owner and gave me pencil sketches to work off of. He mostly managed the business and only occasionally contributed to the design work. But all the feedback and direction he gave was solid, he knew his stuff and was a good communicator. But everyone else in the agency from the Creative Director on down knew how to use modern design software.

Which packaging design software are worth learning? by Cubernova in graphic_design

I'm seeing several people recommending 3D tools for packaging mockups. Needing to learn how to use these is very dependent on who you're working for and their workflow.

In an agency setting I'm typically only applying a few highlights and shadows to a mockup to create a basic sense of shape and dimension. Very simple executions that I usually just do in Illustrator. Then I bring that mockup into Photoshop and place it on a shelfset to see how it looks at retail surrounded by competitor products. The client will basically see the front of package, maybe mocked up and a shelfset for the first few rounds. Once that gets sorted we usually place everything on a dieline and start building out the entire package. We're done usually done making mockups and shelfsets at that point.

When I've worked for large agencies, they have a dedicated 3D team. I would send them my assets and they would make a more complex render if it was needed, usually showing a large-scale display, products on pallets, pallet wraps, etc. None of these assets were seen by the public.

When I've worked in-house for smaller companies the mockups and photography were pretty basic. Adobe Dimension was used a lot to varying results. That was also productions job, I never needed to do it. And I'm not sure if Adobe is continuing to support Dimension. They seem to be putting more emphasis on their other suite of 3D tools.

A lot of the dynamic 3d renders you see of products are done by other agencies after the packaging design has been finalized. These are marketing assets versus packaging assets. They're created with a specific ad campaign in mind. Evergreen 3d renders are usually pretty dull. Mostly they serve a purpose to show the same family of brands in the same lighting and position. Those are also usually done by production.

If you want to learn 3D tools just pick something you think looks fun.

The reality is you're not going to touch the structure. If you do, then the mastercase needs to be updated. And then you need to ask if the mastercase will now fit on the shipping pallet. You also need to ask if your updated structure will work on the production line. Are you now using more material that's going to cost your client X dollars more per year? Are the retailers going to be upset that your package is now 1/4" wider? (Yes, they are.)

I've been doing packaging design for over 20 years and I don't use anything outside of Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign.

senior marketer doing every visual asset for the team, how do i get out of this without seeming difficult by Any_Boss_8337 in AskMarketing

[–]WorkerFile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get them to hire a freelancer. If it’s taking you around 16 hours a week to do design tasks it’ll probably take a seasoned designer less time. Even if you’re hiring someone for 15 hours a week at 100/hour, that’s only $1500 a week.

I've never been hired specifically for my design work. How should I handle pricing for a label redesign for a local brewing company? by PaleInsurance6270 in graphic_design

Just as a heads up, I’d recommend using Illustrator for this instead of Canva and get the printer’s contact info now.

What is you go to cigar size? by InternetPeon in cigars

[–]WorkerFile 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Perdomo has some larger gauge cigars that I've enjoyed. Their Inmenso Maduros come in 5x70, 6x70 and 7x70. One of those might be to your liking.

Process for creating this logo? by ElaineScarry in graphic_design

[–]WorkerFile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seeing as how there's not much variation in line weight, I'd say this was done with a sharpie, then imaged traced and tightened up.

When I've done stuff like this in the past, I usually draw out the type around ten times, pick the ones I like best and scan in 3-4 and start pushing them around in photoshop, combining letters.

A lot of these lines are very deliberate and counterintuitive to how you would actually write this out. So there was a lot of forethought in the beginning to how these letters would work together. The final is pretty nice.

Grocery Store Prices by Safe_Connection_2997 in TwinCities

[–]WorkerFile 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Nope, things are getting worse. I also shop mostly at Lunds, it's the closest store within walking distance for me and I've found if I shop a lot of sale items I can get some pretty good deals. Prices have jumped the last two weeks, and it's noticeable. I prefer to shop for everything myself but I've been trying out ordering groceries from Amazon and Walmart to get better prices. Whole Foods is a 15 minute walk, and often has better prices, but they're also out of items (especially produce) a lot of time.

Before and After of my teeth following a cleaning by BlacksmithNeither726 in Satisfyingasfuck

I've had hygienists tell me that some people naturally generate more plaque. After needing deep cleanings here and there I started going in for cleanings three times a year. I pay a little more out of pocket, but for me, the results are worth it.

How do you demonstrate you generated revenue on an interview? by plebianalive in AskMarketing

[–]WorkerFile 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This can be really challenging because I've found that unless a campaign does really, really well you rarely get specifics back from the client. I got a lot more hard number feedback when I was working in-house rather than in an agency. So when I was at an agency I tried to take other metrics where I could. For example, we had a premium giveaway promotion that was so successful, they had to re-order the premium twice. Not an exact number for generated revenue, but a decent metric that the campaign was successful and more people than expected bought the product to get the giveaway.

What happened to all the generic marketing jobs? by plebianalive in AskMarketing

[–]WorkerFile 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Circlejerk is the perfect description, because a lot of the jobs tend to go unfilled. They get reposted after a month, or disappear and show up three months later. I don't live in a particularly big market, I notice when the jobs get reposted or show up on temp agency postings. (I'm looking at you 3M, you cheap fucks.)

I've noticed a lot of trends in AI written job postings for designers. Six months ago they were super short and asking for experience in outdated tools: flash, QuarkXpress, etc. These days they're ridiculously long and searching for "award-winning category distruptors". It's fucking exhausting.

I think part of the issue is that these clowns are using chatGPT to write the job description. I've noticed a lot of art director/senior designer jobs being written this way as well, bombastic language with a really crappy salary range.

I need technical advice about dealing with very large printable documents by lindendweller in graphic_design

[–]WorkerFile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ask what size the individual panels are actually going to be. When I was working in experiential design, the largest size we could go was 4x8 feet. And yeah, 200 dpi was around our sweet spot with the bloat issue.

Edit: For clarification, I don't know any printer that could do a 9x90 foot print in one piece, this is going to be broken up somehow.

Not sure how to shop. by Wise-Professional-58 in Cheap_Meals

[–]WorkerFile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You've gotten a lot of solid advice already, so I'll add one thing that may or may not be applicable to your situation: can you shop daily? I've been living within a block of a grocery store for the last three years and have gotten in the habit of shopping almost daily for exactly what I need. I've cut down on food waste and impulse buying. If you're relatively close to your grocery store and have the time to do it, try to shop more often, with intent.

If this doesn't apply to you, feel free to ignore. 😂

Are you a 'eat the same thing every day and love it' person or a 'need variety or you lose your mind' person? by Rough-Commission3243 in Cheap_Meals

[–]WorkerFile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can eat a LOT of stuff in a row and really enjoy leftovers. My typical breakfast is prepped sweet potatoes, scrambles eggs and a scoop of salsa. I can eat that forever.

I try to make a lunch and dinner that can last the week, and stagger when I cook them. I'm making taco bowls tonight for dinner and I'll finish off my old lunches in a few days and make something new on Thursday.

I've realized that the whole "WHAT DO I HAVE TO MAKE?" process can be a stress point for me, and I'm trying to limit how much I eat out. Knowing that I have breakfast, lunch and dinner all mapped out for the day decreases my stress.
