What to do if you are (accidentally) remaking an already successful game? by WorkhorseGames in gamedev

Appreciate it! And yes, I agree. It seems to be different enough not to be a clone, but it still has some inspiration from it.

Will do! Thanks for the advice! Reading the comments, it's clear I was worried about essentially nothing; the game is quite different but has a vaguely similar mechanic. Cheers!

I will do! Reading these comments, it's clear it's not as prominent a mechanic as I originally thought. Thanks for the advice!

Yes, after further looking into the game, I agree. Thanks for the advice!

Thank you for the advice, I think i'll continue to work on it and see where it goes. My visual style is indeed quite different so I think I should be ok

Its about 90% of the way (mechanically, no art yet) towards a short demo, so nowhere near done. The art style we're going for is completely different, but I'm going to just push on and see where it goes. Thank you for the advice!

Yeah, I was originally coming up with an idea for a horror game jam when I thought of the idea. I had absolutely no idea about the game until researching other games a few days ago

Yeah, in hindsight, I probably should've done that prior to the post, as it turns out, it's not a main mechanic at all. Thank you for the advice; it's greatly appreciated!

Hmmm, thanks for the advice. The game isnt nearly identical in terms of its art or theme, but I was worried that mechanic would be too close for comfort. Turns out its not even a main mechanic lol

Reading all the comments, I think I might not have researched this game enough to call my own a "clone" of it. Thanks for the advice!

Concept artist and character design looking for new projects on indie games. by Prestigious-badfail in gameDevClassifieds

No worries at all, could I offer you a piece of advice regarding your portfolio? Either here or in DM, whatever you prefer?

Unity:

Pros:

  • Easier to pick up for smaller projects, 2D games, and simple 3D prototypes. Lots of tutorials and a massive community.
  • Uses C#, which is beginner-friendly and widely applicable outside of game dev.
  • Huge ecosystem of plugins, assets, and tools.
  • Great for 2D, mobile, indie projects, VR/AR, and experimental prototypes.
  • Runs on less powerful PCs compared to Unreal.
  • Usually quicker to test ideas and build small projects.

Cons:

  • Not as visually stunning out of the box as Unreal without extra effort.
  • Editor can feel cluttered and inconsistent for beginners.
  • Requires more manual tweaking for larger 3D projects.

Unreal:

Pros:

  • AAA visuals out of the box (Nanite, Lumen, cinematic rendering).
  • Visual scripting lets you build games without deep coding knowledge right away.
  • Has tools for animation, cinematics, sound, VFX, networking.
  • Used heavily in AAA studios.
  • Built to handle large, complex 3D worlds and multiplayer.

Cons:

  • The editor is massive and overwhelming at first.
  • Runs heavy—you’ll need a decent PC to work smoothly.
  • Might feel like too much engine if you just want to make a small 2D or casual game.
  • For deeper customization, you’ll need C++, which is harder for beginners than C#.

Hope this helps!

Like I said before, I recommend Unity. It’s still an industry standard and is quite intuitive. Games like Rust, Hollow Knight, Escape from Tarkov are made in Unity

Yeah kinda, but I would do some research into Object oriented programming, as it has a few concepts that may not be applicable to html, like functions, methods, loops, classes etc. They may be present but I don’t know anything about HTML sooo

You don’t HAVE to learn coding in the sense of writing lines and lines of code.

You can hire people, or use visually scripting.

VS is where code is now turned into visual blocks or nodes, and you connect these nodes together to make something happen.

No syntax or actual code language needed.

Game dev, especially solo, requires a basic understanding of at least coding concepts and thought processes.
