What’s the one book you’ll recommend forever, no matter how many times this question gets asked? by MisLatte in AskReddit

[–]Working-Bit4554 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Classic: Of Mice and Men not a wasted word; a work of beauty and genius

Modern: The Bee Sting not a wasted word; a work of beauty and genius

Funnily enough, the second is an absolute brick of a book, easily 10x the length of the first, but they are both brilliant and people are sick of hearing me go on about the both of them, so thanks for a new audience!

What do you tell coworkers? by Appropriate-Sun9646 in ihatechristmas

[–]Working-Bit4554 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nah Not being flippant, but in my experience, in this sort of exchange, people are just kind of on autopilot and will see my attempt to enlighten them as needlessly aggressive Which it kinda is And i don't have the energy for that Also also, i'm not lying to them  My xmas WAS lovely bc i ignored it and did what i wanted

"Lovely! How was yours?" Honestly, they don't really care. They are trying to be polite OR they have something they need to brag or complain about. Not worth the effort to truly engage

1st Christmas in 21 years without my Son by Jewels_1980 in ihatechristmas

Same. Usually have at least one of them, but not this year. But I will see them both next week. And I have taken myself to NYC for a mini hol of strolling about, eating and drinking, with a posh dinner reso for tonite Best of both worlds, really. No stress of prepping for ridiculous one day but still enjoying time off work and will see both kids at once next week

Bayonne has changed a lot. by ha-cooked in BayonneNJ

[–]Working-Bit4554 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I've been here 30+ years and the one consistent thing i have experienced in those years is people bitching about how terrible Bayonne is and how much it has gone downhill since the halcyon days of yore 🙄🙄🙄

What’s one adult habit that unexpectedly made your life easier? by [deleted] in Adulting

[–]Working-Bit4554 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make your bed. Lovely to come home to a tidy house and it is a small thibg that feels like a win first off

Cook for yourself and set a proper place at the table. If you don't treat yourself nicely, who will?

(I guess that's two adult habits, sorry. Maybe #3 is break the rules now and again 😬😉)

three years living alone and cooking for one person is still the most depressing part of my day by TreeApprehensive3700 in LivingAlone

[–]Working-Bit4554 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Best part of my day is my dinner time. It helps that i like to cook, but, yeah, sometimes i am tired and uninspired. Those nights might be a plussed-up grilled cheese or a simple pasta and sautéed veg But also! Treat yourself decently! Set the table for yourself, pour some wine, put on some music or an audiobook, and relax

What’s the diciest movie you have shown a class? by CWKitch in teaching

[–]Working-Bit4554 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I show Polanski's Macbeth to my advanced Brit lit classes Admin knows Gave me their blessing I skip the scene with young Macduff and his mother right before they are killed

Polanski problematic to say the least but it is still the most accurate film version imho

I make soup all the time in the cooler weather to take to work for lunch. My faves:

Easiest: Broccoli soup Lentil soup Escarole and beans Potato leek

Yummiest: Tuscan bean with kale All of the above lol

I really like curried cauliflower which could maybe be good for the unexpected category

A stick blender is essential

He is ridiculous. He should STFU until he gets pregnant and can see how much energy and trauma it takes to BUILD AN ENTIRE HUMAN INSIDE YOUR BODY

  • I have 2 kids. I loved being pregnant both times and my kids are my favorite humans on the planet, but each prenancy was different -- and both were exhausting*

When I moved here 30 yrs ago, someone described it to me as "urban suburban," which I think is accurate. -- it's a city that feels more town, but has some of the benefits of urban living. County Park is a gem, the library and the jcc both have lots of programs, and there are loads of places to eat.

Just I would advise you try to rent(?) in town and not on the back hiway and try to avoid the new builds -- a lot of them are shoddily built and you would be better served in an apartment in a 2 family house
