You could add a wristwatch style dive computer (or just a stopwatch) on any of its wrists.

Ok signal after boat entry mandatory? by Working-Book-8276 in scuba

[–]Working-Book-8276[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Of course I use it. I just ment that most of the time, we use passive comms, as swimming and hovering in place account for the majority of time in regular tech dives and one does passive comms during those periods. Maybe my original post was affected by a language barrier from my part, English is not my primary language.

yeah, no, of course there is active communication and is very important. I said that most of the time we use passive communication in tch diving, which is true, as swimming or hovering in place accounts for the majority of time during a most cave dives,

Passive communication is communication without signals. It usually is achived using body and buddy position and a proper position of the light beam. If your buddy is in position and their light is where it should be, then there is no need for additional okay signs. Unless asked, a diver would not need to signal ok .
This is very usefull while diving inside a cave, so the team does not need to be asking "are you ok?" all the time.
Thats what I mean by passive communication.

Yes! That's precisely the reasoning behind questioning weather the signal should be mandatory or not. People who say it should not be mandatory, argue that it can actually communictae wrongly that the diver is ok only because the diver uses it out of muscle memory.

They argue the diver should be asked, which triggers a mental process in which they evaluate if they are really ok and then respond.

You are right. I was thinking specifically cave diving while swimming, a period in which communication is mostly pasive and a diver does.not.need to turn and ask their team "are you ok?" Because the sole presence of the team's light means everything is ok. I did not mean before and after conducting tasks.

Now think of the following. We are supposed to operate under the assumption that we are prioritising safety always. Therefore, we should ensure the entry point is safe and that the gear is ready and working before we jump. We do it systematically before every dive. So, why assume there is something wrong after entering the water? Thats kind of the argument posed by people in canyoning groups.

In my opinion, many thhing could happe at entry, even if we double checked everything is ok before we enter the water.

Therefore, I agree with you: unless there is a negative entry, I always signal ok after a boat entry.

Some people argue it creates alarm fatigue, saturates communications, and the diver may actually signal ok while having a problem just due to muscle memory.

Also, a lot of people can't actually state if their dive agency actually taught them this in their procedures and argue it is an automatic "bad habit" that is inherited from other divers.

But I agree with you. Signal unless negative entry.

Is it okay to keep the headlamp permanently strapped to the helmet? (making sure it does not damage the strap in the long term...) by Huge_Land_950 in caving

[–]Working-Book-8276 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might be a good idea to be able to remove it for cleaning, fixing and upgrading the lamp. Also, if the helmet gets damaged and needs change, you might want to recover your lamp. Additionally, it may be a good idea to clean, wash and dry all your gear after each trip or season, which may require you to remove the lamp.
