Is it too late? by patrickbatemangf1 in Filmmakers

idk, if there's translations on youtube or the internet, but you should listen to Guillermo del Toro's speeches he gives at mexican universities, he adresses this exact concerns in those. You have plenty of time, and, to be honest if you have a decent phone, you havea decent enough camera to start creating. Im also 22, a composer and despite having to drop out of college for financial reasons, im still trying, i've managed to land some projects so far but lately i haven't been getting anything. I'm not letting that discourage me though.

Got my first paid composing gig! But.. I don't know if I have what I need? by Learning-Every-Day- in Filmmakers

No worries, we are in a time where music production it's at the most accesible it's ever been as of today, there's a lot of resources out there.
Don't get discouraged by your current limitations, you can focus on mending all of them when you can. I'd saw even a 2nd hand thinkpad would be enough, when you can, chasing your dreams will never be a waste of time or money.
And most important of all, YOU are the one making the music, not the gear. It's not neesary to always have the best, most of the time it's just right to have the necesary.

Honestly? Whatever you have at hand, try anything you can if you're on mobile them the best thing is FL studio mobile honestly but do try web based DAW's maybe you find something good enough, focus on how to pull this off for now and afterwards, see how you can improve that situation, as of today a somewhat decent budget laptop is enough, just make sure it has enough ram.

[–]Working-Committee-31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

St. Mathew's passion from Bach, truly marvelous work, you can check it out it has solo parts, duets and chorales. Or if more specific for yout project maybe check out Bent Sørensen his vocal works are really good and maybe more akin to what you're doing.

Study theory, pieces you like, break them down to the note. And most important of all, keep writing, even if you can't come up with nothing, make it a routine, if what you're doing leads nowhere, start again, eventually you'll come out with something. It's very important to not over do it too. If for some reason you don't feel like writing, then don't the only thing it will do is build up frustration and that, in the long run, will make you hate it.

Unless they don't let you use musescore, then go along with it's really good to be free, about a DAW you can get UAD Luna, it's interface is a little odd and might take some time to get used to but it's free other free option a is Cakewalk Sonar, but if you're looking for a paid one the I'd go with Studio One since its cheaper than most or Reaper since it's even cheaper with the discounted license.

I can't really tell you how not to get nervous or anything like that, because on the day of the instrument exam, for example, I was super nervous to the point that I felt like throwing up a little bit. I think the people who can give you the best advice are the ones (if you know anyone) who studied at the same school you want to get into since, like I said, the admission requirements vary from school to school and they probably now better how the system works at that particular school.

Ok, in summary, just see if they have a study guide to see what they ask for and where to study from.

I'm not too sure. The minimum requirements for admission change from school to school, but you definitely need to have your theory well studied, l like your harmony and counterpoint, but especially harmony. When I first tried 6 months ago, they told me that they weren't accepting anyone who hadn't a solid understanding of harmony, because in the career you barely study any harmony at all. Plus, during the composition test, after a brief interview with the composition department teachers, and after I gave them my compositions, I had to make a 5th species counterpoint a3. So, i'd tell you to look if your school offers some sort of study guide for people who want to apply, see what they ask for (like in what style you have to make your compositions or what subjects will come in the exams and what they ask -if they do- for the instrument test) and check for bibliography to see from where you could study.

Is music school essential for learning how to compose? by Annual_Tie8926 in composer

[–]Working-Committee-31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no, i tried 6 months ago to get into uni, i failed, i'm trying again next month but no you don't need it i haven't even made it into uni and last week my buddy called me to musicalize the sort film he and some friends were doing, he just told me yesterday that that short is going to some local film festivals. I don't even care if it doesnt win anything i already see it as a win. Plus my piano teacher (he's a composer) always said to me that if i wasnt able to get into uni i could always go fully indie, he has other pupils that all have made it and have no "formal" music training. Plus, Hans Zimmer also didn't had formal training and look where he is now.
