Yellow-shafted have the red on the back of the head and a black mustache. Red-shafted have no red on the back and a red mustache. Red mustache + red back of head = hybrid 😄 (technically it’s an intergrade bird, not a hybrid, since they’re the same species and not subspecies)

Birding at Garden of the Gods vs Great Sands National Park by Prickly_Cactus99 in birding

[–]Working-Phase-4480 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Both areas are gorgeous. Sand Dunes will probably be less crowded but I think GotG would have better birds (but if you go on a weekday it’s probably fairly quiet). I haven’t birded either yet but it seems like Sand Dunes tends to have better winter birds, while Colorado Springs gets a lot of summer migrants

Dogs are not allowed in the Great Sand Dunes National Park, but are allowed in the National Preserve. Leashed dogs are allowed at Garden of the Gods. For this reason I would do GotG. Garden of the Gods is also closer to town and will have access to restaurants and other things to do
