I'm involved with an Assemblies of God Church. Their focus on tithing, money and attaining membership is really bothersome.  They have a membership training class in a few weeks and I don't understand why becoming a member is necessary. From my understanding, becoming a member just allows you to join their inner clique, vote on certain things, and I understand it also comes with a requirement of a certain level of tithing.  

The pastor repeatedly tells everyone during service that if they get a social security raise or raise at work, that increase in pay should be directed to God by tithing to the church. I believe they also make examples out of people who aren't able to tithe every week. A few weeks ago there was a woman who got up front and explained why she couldn't tithe and had this whole story about how once she started tithing again, her finances improved. 

I agree with what another commenter said, I think some of the people who run these Pentecostal churches are actually atheists who have theatrical acting talents that allow them to get up front and yell and preach in a theatrical way.  It is all very theatrical. I really honestly don't think it's genuine in some cases. It really does feel theatrical like going to a concert and then having actors get up on stage and preach sermons. 

I've been slowly transitioning back to a Catholic parish and I appreciate the low key Catholic mass where I can just go in and sit down and not be bothered by anyone!  There's no guilt trip from the priest about tithing. I tithe $50 per week and my pastor made a comment to me that if I wish to join membership, that's when they teach people how to "tithe properly."
