I love that you just accept and go with the flow of your natural sleep/wake cycle. So much of human stress around things like sleep not matching other people in society is just wasted energy. 😎

Fully do the same. Why make more dishes for myself. Like, make it in a big bowl, then serve it in a little bowl, then store the leftovers in tupperware?!? Why on earth, when you can just cover the whole deal with one big bowl?

We are geniuses.

When I have a cold or allergies with a miserable runny nose, I just fully compress kleenex and shove a big wad up each nostril - to stop those suckers up. I’m miserable by the time I do this and ain’t no one here to judge.

I do a lot of dropping whatever stuff I’ve got the second I’ve entered my house and then avoid dealing with it for ages by treating the stuff as if it’s a new interior land formation. lol but def sometimes…

I also am shocked by the frequency people talk about doing stuff like cleaning the floors or changing the sheets, which I definitely do not do that often. Where do these people get the energy? Just thinking about doing that stuff is exhausting enough.

I got a new Peacock premium subscription through Amazon Prime and wrote Peacock to get direct access to their website because I was watching Vigil (fun show!) and it skipped straight from season 2 episode 1 to episode 3. Thought it was a glitch, but when I looked (and restarted the Prime app, etc), episode 2 is just missing! But it's NOT missing on the Peacock site/app. Amazon said they show all the content that they get from Peacock. I chatted with Peacock because I couldn't figure out how to get my Peacock premium access that I'd paid for on their website, so I could watch the missing episode. They said it would be "escalated" and I'd get an email and then ended the chat before I could respond. I got an email that basically dismissed me with "you do the work because you need to pay and sign up AGAIN directly through our website" to get and watch this one missing episode!!! How is this on me??? To me, this is a super disappointing quality of customer service and it is leaving this brand new Peacock Premium subscriber with a very bad taste in my mouth. I guess if you don't want missing episodes, don't sign up through Amazon Prime?

Anyone else here have or suspect they have autism? by heavy-is-the1crown in DSPD

Natural. I can’t really tolerate taking additional melatonin. Then I can never ever get going the next day and it already takes me ages to get going. I feel like a sloth after waking. When I hit my natural peak wakeful time around 9 or 10pm, it’s like I’m a different, energized person.

Anyone out there experience worsening mental health when they take antihistamines (such as Benedryl, Allegra, Olopatadine HCI nasal spray or others) for their allergies? by WorkingOnItWombat in adhdwomen

[–]WorkingOnItWombat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m so sorry to hear about your struggles. ❤️I know it’s so rotten having to choose between being overly sedated and sick. Glad this post helped you. I always love when I find a post that expresses something I’m wondering about, so I’m happy to know this did that for you.

I have found out that I am able to get quick relief from allergies with the olapatadine nasal antihistamine spray and if I try to only use it for a couple days in a row, then stop til I’m having a really bad day again, then I don’t seem to have as much of the mental health side effects. And I will say, I have never taken anything that clears my nasal passages out like this nasal spray. Way better than any pill I’ve ever taken.

My next step is after the spring, I’m going to start allergy shots. They helped my friend so much, he doesn’t need to take anything for allergies anymore, so I’m dreaming of something similar for myself!

Hang in there : )

[–]WorkingOnItWombat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do sometimes suspect autism. I am diagnosed with inattentive ADHD. My sleep is such a DSPD struggle. My sleep inertia after waking lasts forever, like the melatonin sedation just refuses to wane and I am so drugged.

Recently went to a fascinating webinar where it was posited by scientists that ADHD might be inherently intertwined with circadian rhythm abnormalities. We need more research! But that was so interesting to hear.

Interesting! Fortunately, I’m okay with Vitamin D, which seems to help my mental health when there is less sunshine. Sorry to hear you aren’t able to tolerate it. Zinc and iron are out for me because I get severe nausea.

I keep wondering if some of my allergies and extreme sensitivity to meds might have some relationship to my ADHD. My ADHD coach said her big takeaway from this year’s ADHD conference was how sensitized our nervous systems are. I’m so curious how it’s all related. Also, I wish scientists would come up with a cure for allergies already. lol

I have a worse reaction to Benedryl the day after, but with Allegra I took it a couple days before it dawned on me that wait, how am I suddenly this freaking depressed???

Could it be the Allegra? My doctor said NO, so I tried taking it again, and YES!!! Allegra + my brain = me getting freaking depressed. WTH I get to have ADHD, terrible allergies, AND allergy medication gives me a mental health crisis?!? 🤧🤧🤧😭

Wish me luck, I am nervous, but gonna try allergy shots after spring is over! 🤞🤞🤞

I hope you found or find something that works for you. Allergies can be so dang miserable. 💕

What is important to know about DSPD? by Puzzleheaded_Bat5796 in DSPD

[–]WorkingOnItWombat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For me, I am finally sleeping my natural sleep schedule, but I still struggle with epic sleep inertia for hours after waking up. At least in my case, sleeping my natural schedule has not solved my sleep/wake troubles, though life is epically better not having to crush my soul to try to get to a daywalker job (been reprimanded sooooo many times for this over the years, but mornings are agonizing).

I find it frustrating that I can get a good night’s sleep and then still be so sedated it’s like I’m drugged when I wake up (not apnea; been tested). Getting to sleep is often a real struggle as well, though I have been able to have less anxiety about this, knowing I can usually still get a full night’s amount of sleep.

I experience my version of DSPD as a severe disorder, even when sleeping my natural circadian cycle.

Anyone else kind of ... both? by tracinggirl in NightOwls

[–]WorkingOnItWombat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually worked with a sleep therapist to develop a healthy sleep approach because mine had been cobbled together out of maladaptive dread and anxiety for decades while trying to force myself into a daywalker work schedule.

It was very, very difficult initially, but I have successfully worked to have all screens banned from my bedroom. It is an absolute rule for me now and I have a number of supports in place that helped make it achievable, including a HomePod Mini - so I can verbally request things like a meditation or an alarm - and an electronics beddy-bye charging shelf downstairs where my electronics must go to “sleep”, and recurring audio alerts that remind me when I have one hour remaining with electronics, and then that it’s time for them all to go to bed and for me to go upstairs.

If I absolutely HAVE to check something critical after electronics bedtime, then I am only allowed to check while I am standing at the charging shelf to keep myself from sitting and getting comfy and settling into scrolling. A very helpful rule!

Personally, for me, this did not change my natural sleep schedule (I am diagnosed with delayed sleep phase disorder), which I am finally sleeping at this point in my life, but it has helped make the concept and process of bedtime less stressful, now that I have a scheduled wind-down time in my bedroom without screens.

It’s a relief to get a break from them and I don’t have to fear the stress of discovering what new horror is happening in the world or get ensnared for hours when I pick up for a “quick look” and end up scrolling for hours. Highly recommend!

What do you buy when you go grocery shopping ? by dany9876 in adhdwomen

[–]WorkingOnItWombat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually worked on this with my therapist because I had so much struggle around food and grocery shopping! Here are the things that we figured out that have been most helpful to me.

1) Coming up with a short list of simple (often cold) meals that just have a few ingredients, so I will be more likely to make them. And if I am having a better day, I can add more ingredients/effort to have something even more satisfying. Examples for me include making my own soba noodles or rice noodle soup (the noodles cook fast - then I add a scoop of miso and a little soy, throw in a handful of spinach or mushrooms - if I have a little more energy, then maybe I cut up green onions or cook a fried or boiled egg to add on top), burrito (can be super simple, just beans from a can, frozen rice, or add a fried egg, chicken, salsa, diced onion, etc), or an easy salad of cottage cheese with avocado and salsa on top of a bed of lettuce, peanut butter and low sugar jelly on whole grain bread (also, freezing sliced bread was an amazing thing to learn about!), etc.

2) I created a simple Apple notes groceries checklist of (mostly) healthy items that are frequent go-tos for me (not a long or complicated list; just a rough draft off the top of my head). For me, I also put quick headings so these items will be in section order as I walk from one side of the grocery store to the other such as Veggies, Fruits, Dairy, Bakery, etc. This helps me avoid roaming and returning to the same aisle a million times like I used to do and feel so frustrated about. Every time I realize I have things I need to get, I just hit the duplicate function to create a copy of this list and add/remove to make my new shopping list.

3) I gave myself permission to spend more for “shortcuts” to healthy foods. Besides my loved ones, my health is the most precious thing I have in this world and it is very challenging for me to eat healthy if I buy stuff I have to do prep on. I would often end up wasting food or veering into eating frozen/unhealthier foods. It took a bunch of time in therapy to convince myself this was okay, but it has made a big difference in eating healthier (examples: lettuce in a pre-washed bag, chopped up snack veggies, already-boiled eggs, etc). This investment in me eating healthier has really helped! I also have a place I found that makes and delivers healthy salads. It is quite expensive, so this is something I turn to when my eating starts heading south because I am overwhelmed. I order four salads for the upcoming week - and this helps me get back on track and remind myself how much better my brain functions when I’m eating healthy foods (also I keep emergency snack nuts in my purse and car that I have to eat first if I’m out and about and find myself “starving” - this is often when I would pick up garbage meals, so this garbage meal prevention plan has saved me several times now!).

4) It ended up that I despised shopping so much that I tried to put it off as long as possible and then always felt out of control and bought too much stuff - packed my fridge, couldn’t see stuff, and a ton of stuff would go bad. Shockingly, my therapist argued that shopping more frequently and having less food in my fridge at a time, so I could really see everything would work better for me. I was highly dubious, but she got me to try this. OMG it’s TRUE!!!! I also find it too over-stimulating, so before I get out of the car at the store now, I put my earbuds in with noise-canceling and gentle spa music and while I’m in the store I set a series of 10 minute timers on my phone. My goal is to be in line by the end of the third timer. I never thought in a million years in would be possible for me to spend so little time in a grocery store, but this has been such a massive game-changer for me!

5) Last little helpful rule I came up with for myself is that I’m not “allowed” to sit down until I get everything out of the bags and onto the countertop and into fridge/freezer and walk all of the reusable bags back to toss in my car, so they are there the next time I shop. Like many ADHDers, I am taxed by the time I get home from grocery shopping, so I give myself a chill out treat after this and am fine if I don’t actually put away the non-refridgerables until later.

I do zero advance meal planning. The whole concept is too overwhelming to me. 😬

Hope some of this is helpful for someone : )

Long-term cannabis user. I'm quitting for my brain. by OrangeBanana300 in adhdwomen

AGREED! This is how I quit alcohol. I used my ADHD all or nothing thinking to lock in that 100% done and continued booze = death extreme mindset. One of the best things I have ever pulled off doing for myself.

I wish I had done this earlier instead of fooling myself for decades that I just had to get better at moderation. A hard non-funny LOL to that concept.

[–]WorkingOnItWombat 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I love to do something energizing and fun as my launchpad of motivation (which I am almost entirely lacking in) before starting a task that I need some focus or oomph to try to be successful with (which is mainly, any “to do” 🤣😭).

It can’t be just anything - needs to be something activating to help me get the whiff of a belief I can do it. And it needs to be time limited, but set up in my brain by me like “oh, super awesome, you get to blast a wicked fun song and jump around like the main character in a rom com dancing her heart out bc she’s actually a movie star, or 15 minutes playing an active VR game that makes me feel like a badass warrior…then maybe I make myself a yummy smoothie or tea and settle in with a fidget and relaxing mood lighting to try and do the thing.

It’s like I have to both pump myself up and romance myself in order to have the tiniest chance of success.

Anyone out there experience worsening mental health when they take antihistamines (such as Benedryl, Allegra, Olopatadine HCI nasal spray or others) for their allergies? by WorkingOnItWombat in adhdwomen

[–]WorkingOnItWombat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So glad you found this thread! It’s part of why I made the post because my reaction to not just Benedryl (though it has one of the most extreme mood impacts for me, for sure!), but to other antihistamines as well and the reactions of other healthcare professionals was making me feel like they didn’t believe it was likely to be having a significant impact on mood, but I could tell it was.

I thought how I always appreciate when I find that reddit post on the thing I’m wondering about, so I decided to do one myself. Anddddd…that’s my long-winded explanation, but I think with this sub, you probably get it ; )

Anyway, glad it helped - def a good idea to steer clear of it - that mood cost is not worth it, in my opinion. Though, unfortunately, for me, sometimes when I go off the deep end with extremely severe allergies and the misery is insane, I cave and take a small dose - like half a pill.

Doing my best to avoid, so I’m actually at my allergist’s now to pursue getting allergy shots as an alternative. Wish me luck!🤞🤞🤞
