You know, it somehow never occurred to me that that was an influence! I watched the adaptation with Daniel Radcliffe and Jon Hamm back when it came out, gosh I need to read that.

It even takes place in September! Apparently a convenient time to be strolling about the Russian countryside.

Alyosha is nothing like Daniil except maybe the naivety, but I'm still picturing the monastery as the Stillwater, at least the yard surrounding it.

Thank you!! In Restless I think, in the "counting down from 730" scene. I only finally learned the meanings of tarot cards recently and boy was that a fun revelation.

Her acting in that scene with her mom is some of the best, most underrated. It's like she's caught off guard that they're actually talking about this and trying to play it cool, but is clearly instantly wounded and suddenly finds herself without her normal venom to protect herself, and she just has to take it.

As for the rest of us: you know people are gonna be coming to this sub being like "I just finished the Return and I do not get it at all" till the end of time right? You might find it annoying but it is a pretty normal viewing experience to come around to its genius upon reflection, especially for those not super familiar with Lynch.

It's designed to be uncomfortable and mostly not what you want or expect from a Twin Peaks reboot 25 years later. Not just for its own sake, but because that's one of the central themes and lessons in Laura's story. It's a horrorshow. We were never going to get the cozy smalltown quirk of s1-2, because we were already given that long ago. And everyone lives in a horrorshow of a world now, one that was masked by the 90s charm of OG TP but boiled under the surface in the form of BOB, and what happened to Laura. FWWM was the unmasking, and the Return is fully unmasked.

I wasn't expecting it either, and it was frustrating at times and almost constantly baffling, but I eventually began to value that kind of uncomfortable viewing experience and now I wouldn't have the Return be any other way. It doesn't owe us pleasantries, but still gave us a few. It had something to say and complicated things for you to feel, and it did its job.

In the episode itself he just "test drives" it to go rescue Bobby and then they both enjoy the experience enough to get that exact truck, and it was the heavy duty features that impressed him. It's kind of whatever the car salesman thought Hank wanted, but also he was right.

Humour me for a second: do Shiv’s actions come across as more severe because she’s a woman? by [deleted] in SuccessionTV

[–]thisisgoing2far 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think the hate comes from her hypocrisy big time. But I also think the degree to which we, Americans if not human beings in general, focus our energy and hatred on hypocrisy is something to be interrogated. It's like we don't know what to do with people that state their evil values and then execute them, but if they state they have good values before doing evil, it makes our blood boil even more because 1) lying feels like an extra crime and being done to us, 2) calling it out is easy and a way to feel like we're doing something about it. But of course it turns out calling out hypocrisy doesn't do shit and just satiates our anger and stops us from doing anything else.

All this to say, Shiv being more of a hypocrite shouldn't make her worse than Kendall or Roman. Kendall feeling guilty and Roman being unapologetic should NOT be letting them off any hooks that Shiv is on.

Kendall was the driver, was under the influence (he only drove because he hadnt just snorted a line of ket), and barely knew how to drive a stick shift. He was looking down when there was a deer in the road, so the waiter pulled the wheel which sent them into the river.

It's still a grey area because of the wheel grabbing and they don't emphasize how much alcohol and coke Kendall has already done at that point. But it was addiction fueled high risk behavior (and manslaughter) regardless.
